I am now 53 years old but when I was 16, on the opening day of deer season. I walked up on a Sasquatch squatted down by a creek. This is the only encounter I've ever had in my life, but it changed my life forever. I can understand the ridiculed the man went through and feel sorry for him. there are things out there that we simply do not understand. After my encounter I was afraid to go into the woods for a year, but I started back hunting and even wanted to encounter the creature again, and I thought I would but in the 36 years following I never found so much as even a track. I have been left wondering how this could be and will most likely wonder this until I pass away.

I'm an Alabama native and an LEO, thank you for this story guys. One thing to note about this one too, apparently the people who thought it was coincidental for a police officer to carry a camera were too stupid to know that a cop needs to carry a camera to take crime scene photographs.

I was going to say exactly the same thing @arthurgodwin6571 said; police (especially officers in small towns) would have polaroid cameras so they could take photos of crime scenes as soon as they arrived so the evidence was as fresh as it could be at the time of discovery and before the rush of extra hands (and feet) to the scene. Now, they don't need to carry bulky polaroid or kodak cameras because now they have GoPros and cell phones.

She was definitely looking for a reason to divorce him. I wouldn't be surprised if she encouraged him to share the story *knowing* that something like this would happen and might've even helped orchestrate the events that happened afterwards to give herself a valid reason for divorce. I’m actually from the area and made my own video on it. The town pretty much thinks it was a hoax played on him by a guy named Ricky Jo Smith. He was a prankster that showed up to a Halloween party in the exact costume as the Metal Man 2 weeks later. However Greenhaw was a victim of this and is the exact reason why people don’t come forward with their encounters. The 50th anniversary is this Tuesday October 17th. Greenhaw never changes his story plus the Pascagoula Alien Abduction happened the same week with Alien entities describing similar creatures

His new wife picked up and said he wasn’t doing interviews anymore and that it was unnecessary because his story had been the same since it happened and wasn’t going to change.

Honestly, in stories like these, the trope that horrifies me the most is when people try to reach out for help and they just get ignored or ridiculed. I always imagine it's like when someone with a mental illness or disability asks for help and since few people understand mental illnesses and disabilities, they just say they don't need or deserve help. Or like someone is trying to escape an abusive relationship but no one would believe that person can be abusive or the abuser constantly gaslights the victim. That's some *real* horror right there!

We routinely take pictures of vehicles involved in accidents and wounds before we dress them to show the receiving staff at the ER the extent of the damage and injuries we encounter on scene. I've always believed & am still 99% certain the chief of police was setup. He was very young in a high position. The caller was anonymous. The figure looked to be wearing what someone working in a blast furnace might wear. The extreme reaction of the town was too odd. I firmly believed some ppl in town wanted him out or were jealous, likely a few of his subordinates & maybe someone seriously wanted that position or to see him ousted for whatever reason. I remember the Greenhaw event. I was in grade school at the time. Our school put out--or rather, circulated--a "school newspaper" or broadsheet on topics of interest every two weeks or so. Well, this event, which I had heard something about, appeared in the broadsheet --except the angle of the broadsheet mocked Greenhaw's encounter by casting doubt on it, showing young kids wrapping themselves up with aluminum foil, and some dude who had built a metal "flying saucer" in his back yard. It was the end of the Nixon era, during the height of the Cold War, and there was a lot of disinformation being put out. Plus, I think 1973 was the height of "boots on the ground" alien encounters.

I think the most unbelievable thing here is that anyone thought they could convince the good people of mid-/late-20th Alabama about the existence of anything anomalous. I don't know. The pictures definitely look odd, what little there is to see of them. But you'd have to be a particular type of stupid to think you could successfully hoax a bunch of small-town Alabamans with some blurry photos and a crazy story. Firebombing homes (or burning crosses in yards) is the de facto response to "unusual" things in that state. And this guy would have *known* that. I'd be willing to bet that while some of this *might* be apocryphal, this guy likely saw something unusual.

Those photos are famous and I've seen them published in many UFO books, but this is the most complete telling of the back-story I've heard. This sounds less like a prank by the sop and more like the cop was the victim of a conspiracy by the townsfolk, including his wife. Wonder what he did to provoke such a prank. Pretty cruel. Not uncommon at all, there’s officers that are 18, most states only require 18 or 19 years of age, how else u gonna get the experience to get in, get a good position and utilize pension? Where I live it’s very unusual they require folks to be 21 and have a minimum associates degree to work in any LE capacity but that’s HIGHLY unusual and makes it very difficult for people to obtain the requisite experience and years of service to use their pension, move up etc. and it’s a huge contributor to staffing shortages bc LE is typically something u go into early and make a career of, middle aged plus officers dont last and not much benefit to them

This story always fascinated me as a kid because of the photographs, as an adult I've always been more sceptical, but with the perspective of an old cynic this case still interests me but for much different reasons. I just get this gut feeling this was less a guy just falling for the efforts of a local prankster but something more malicious... I mean, the intense ridicule and victimisation of the man seems like some kind of vendetta to ruin someone. You don't firebomb a man's home because he said he saw an alien... to me, this is something way closer to home and more unpleasant than spacemen or any other lofty conspiracy, it feels more like a concerted effort to ruin a man's life and career.

The publisher included in the article all four photographs, then in the follow-up on the matter did a brake down and analysis of the figure in sequence, noting the being's initial strands as it looked standing still at first then apparently beginning to turn as if walking away. The publisher's own belief , was something did happened on that darkened stretch of road that couldn't be a typical hoaxe or common prank. I personally feel this matter should have been looked into more closely ( didn't anybody else go out there looking for evidence, footprints? ) truly if this is the case , then the rest of his fellow officers had no reason to turn this into a joke and even if nothing was found it would have blunted some of the heartlessness that came from this encounter!! This policeman ruined his life so much for tell the truth: someone arson his house,he divorced,was fired and ruined,he used to tell that was "under surveillance" and repeating to everybody that "things(in general) are not at all as appears" ...and there is still a question: ¿who call at his home demanding help? the village was pretty small and he knews almost every people there,including their voices by phone due to his work,but he never was able to identify the "woman" who calls that night.

My question is, why do these suits resemble something out of a 50s sci-fi movie like "The Day the Earth Stood Still" instead of something more modern and more refined like the Iron Man suit or Master Chief's Mjolnir armor?
