I wonder if Michael Collins was not the braviest of them all. He knew he won't touch the Moon himself, so nobody will be asking him 'how it is on the Moon?' However what he knew was that Neil and Buzz are supposed to launch from the Moon using engine that was small solid booster. Those can be fired only once and cannot be stopped later. For that reason those engines were not tested, as starting them means using them up. And there was no secondary backup one. If that engine failed, Michael was supposed to tell them "We are so proud of you guys" and head back to Earth alone, as nothing else he could do. Living the rest of his life remembering this.

Fun fact. Michael Collins wasn't bothered that the other astronauts seemed to be more famous than him. He said that if I failed in my calculations and failed to bring them back to the command module thus failing to bring them all home. Nope, they worked around it via invention of "Epstien Drive", just really efficient and fast drive, not a warp one - they try to be as grounded, as possible. You can give the show a chance - in fact, it's a first show I've seen, where fire in vaccum is spherical, they also make actors hairstyle "higher", cause, you know, no gravity. But they also not overutilizing weghtlessness, as they're imitating gravity while accelerating/ decelerating, and because of that, compartments in the ship are perpendicular to the ship body

Yes, you need most of the fuel to leave earth, but when using a cycler there is much less mass (only the taxi) that needs to leave earth. So you will save a lot of fuel.

The biggest benefit for the cycler would be probably that it could provide bigger living quarters because the mass and volume could be put in space with multiple starships and only the payload needed to be accelerated every time.

A cycler could literally be a huge O'Neil cilinder, yet you will only need as much fuel for a martian mission as you would need to send only the crew. Starships would still be needed to get people to and from the cyclers. Building cyclers shouldn't be any more difficult than building a space station, it's just docking half a dozen custom starships together to form an axle and spokes. Then dock some colony ships to that... :)

I think if these billionaires keep ramping things up and dumping the money into it, a colony is totally feasible. The question is, why? I can think of so many scenarios, and none of them end well. The argument about colonizing Mars because of global warming would be hilarious if it wasn't so frightening to hear people with so much power demonstrating such a severe lack of the basics of what they're trying to do. If you can't solve global warming, you will never "Terraform" a planet. "Terraform" the Sahara first, if not just to prove the concept. Anyway, with the current technology, the value of any resources that could be acquired on Mars would pale in comparison to the cost of getting them. It's a pipe dream that has a frighteningly high likelihood of being prematurely attempted in our lifetime with what will likely be catastrophic results.

Fun Fact: Buzz figured when returning from the surface of the Moon that they had enough fuel to do a faster rendezvous with the Command Module than was planned. He executed this plan without talking at all with mission control about it. He figured that had he not been the one doing it, Mission Control would have just asked him if it would work, so he decided to just do it without mentioning the plan to them.

Fun fact: I directed a feature film several years ago. It was pretty terrible, but it did get a distribution deal. It ended up in the DVDs under $5 bin at Walmart, got some buys on basic cable, and 3.5 stars while it was on Netflix so it apparently was appreciated by "some". It's important to mention that the lunar rendezvous concept was crazy because A RENDEZVOUS HAD NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. They didn't even think it was possible! I study the topic and formation flying in space is COMPLICATED, you can't just thrust towards the target and expect to get closer, actually, sometimes doing that makes you go FARTHER AWAY! Buzz only knew it was possible because he literally did his phd dissertation on rendezvous.

To me, the big advantage is having a much larger transit vehicle for the long trip. It still has to be accelerated initially, but then it is available for use. Cargo doesn't care about having a larger living space or spin-induced gravity. If the shorter transit times for direct transfer orbit are desirable enough to put up with less space, then cyclers aren't going to happen. Personally, I think the advantages of more space and other luxuries (that are only justified by accelerating once and then using over and over again) make cyclers attractive. I had not considered the benefit of putting the higher initial investment in place that then has a fairly long useful life.

Just think of the cycler as an interplanetary space station. Each mission requires a cargo, living space between planets, mars landing and launch ship with living quarters and supplies, and earth return ship. What you bring back from Mars probably won't be too useful for between planets. But the living quarters could be reused as long as you repair bad parts and resupply consumables. Or just add another section of living quarters plus cargo each time in case you miss the rendezvous, and reuse older quarters or parts from the quarters and dispose.

Thanks so much for this explanation of cycling spaceships. I read about them once in a book on space exploration and was amazed at all of the existing technology that can get us around the solar system while being disappointed that interstellar travel is not that easy. I think cycling ships will eventually be the future of solar system travel even though currently they don't get the attention they deserve.

My wife's grandmother dated Buzz in highschool and I'm assuming didn't know he landed on the moon because years and years later (and I can't remember the context) she said "I wonder what happened to that Buzzy fellow?" At least I think that's what she called him. Her son informed her that he landed on the moon and was a national hero, much to the chagrin of her husband.

Something similar happens today (except for covid-19). Goods are transported slowly and efficiently by ship while people are transported by air. Merchant ship fleets tend to operate like a conveyor belt. Excellent video and now I'm going to buy some Mack Weldons

Concerning the argument at 10:10, "that cyclers aren't much more fuel efficient ..." I think for cargo this is true, but for crew, you can have the cycler contain a bunch of habitable volume. You could launch on something small, like a dragon capsule, which is not comfortable for 4 people to live in for more than a week, and dock with something as big or bigger than the ISS. In this case you'd only have to pay for the delta-v of the dragon capsule to match the speed of the cycler, and you'd effectively get the living space of the cycler for free.

It's a great idea. Considering what could be put 'aboard' a multi-castle system could easily be used to store supplies or mined materials. The expenses happen on earth, with all the support personnel wanting to be paid for eyeball duty, and a lot of that could be crowdsourced down to the high school level (and probably will be early in the program). Drones with NFT signals funneled through orbiting or lunar relays.

I am so glad that you have taken up the cycler concept. It is the obvious "BUS" for space conveyance. In my opinion buzz was brilliant. Why waste fuel over and over on space travel when it is the "MAIN" problem for getting into space. As for slowing the cycler down and speeding it up there is a far more efficient method to do this. Explosive force uses one tenth the fuel as conflagration of rockets does. firing a cannon in forward orientation slows it down and delivers earth borne samples and cargo. Firing waste in reverse to burn up in the atmosphere, speeds it up again.

The craft has to constantly maintain the Lagrange points so that the gravitational force of other planets don't mess with it. 2. He adviced to utilise the air drag of atmosphere which will definitely affect the materials and components at 1500°C (unimaginable for multiple tries). We lack such materials. 3. However more than 85% fuel is going to be used to escape the atmosphere and the remaining to catch up and docking and then to get the mega structure into Mars orbit? and ION drives won't help with earth's atmospheres. (Direct launch is better). 4. When the taxi thing docks with the cycler it drastically changes the orbit that when picking up and also while dropping, so we need to constantly control it to reach earth again whilst moving in Lagrange points, avoiding obstacles, maintaining the orbit, etc (with ion drives?),(multiple dockings? we need to develop a lot) 5. Deimos and Phobos are said to be escaped asteroids and any slight variations will change their orbits and landing and holding on to a place with almost 0 gravity requires more equipments and accessories (and yeah increases its mass and orbit changes and may end up in colliding on Mars) 6. We are taking up a huge orbit around the sun and and we have to wait for the perfect day to get into it 🤭. I'm afraid this rendevous medthod is pointless ...

the biggest benefit of cyclers is the taxi's only have to move the crew, the castle can have all the shielding and support systems you could want while the taxi just expends the fuel equivalent for a couple of people to get to mars. Also they'd likely be very good mass transports.
