I have the 2020 S1000RR and a friend has the 2020 S1000XR. We sometimes trade. Some thoughts/info: 1. No coding plug needed to activate the XR’s Dynamic Pro modes, just like as in the RR’s Race Pro modes. This assumes you have the option level that includes the capability. 2. I find the 2020 XR to be a bit plusher than the 2018, but the handling, power curve, brakes and general riding dynamics are all slightly improved. 3. Most of the XR’s vibration was solved in 2017, but the 2020 is smoother still. Taller 5/6 gears help still more. 4. You didn’t try/review the Bluetooth phone/helmet integration, app, nav, etc. It’s brilliant and a big differentiator for BMW. The app can even replay your past rides on the map showing performance telemetry such as speed, throttle, braking, lean angle, etc. Very cool. 5. BMW’s luxury features are remarkable including the heated grips, cruise control, self-canceling signals, hill stop assist and so much more. 6. I like the XR’s new luggage system better than the previous generation. It’s similar, but just works better IMO. The little compartment on the tank is brilliantly useful (e.g., for a wiping cloth and cleaner). 7. I don’t see the SuperDuke GT as the main competitor. That’s the Multistrada 1260 S. Both amazing bikes. 8. If you want a comfortable long tour through mountain roads, the XR and Multi are the two kings of the hill. I prefer the BMW formula, but it’s a matter of taste. If it weren’t for the pandemic gods closing the world, I would currently be on a new (rented) XR traversing the Pyrenees with friends instead of posting on KZbin. 9. If you want something sportier than the XR, go full hooligan as I did with the RR M Sport. Though both S1000, the RR is a rocket ship - far more powerful, lighter and flickable than the XR. I love the RR through the twisties and on the track. The constant terror you feel at anywhere close to full WOT and RPM keeps me from noticing the crunch position discomfort. Again, the XR is perfect for tours - a far sportier GS. 10. I just spent two days on Willow Springs Raceway on an RR where my excessive exuberance caused the TFT’s lean-angle display to show 90 degrees. Thankfully, it was on their RR and it only hurt in the wallet and ego. Undaunted, I am taking my own RR onto COTA in two weeks where it can brush 200 MPH on the back straight. Pray for me.

About 1500 miles ago I just got the 2018 version of the S1000XR and it's definitely the best bike I ever had (I had 12 bikes previously including the S1000R). The automatic suspension adjustment, handling, and the quick shifter is just amazing on the S1000XR.

I have had the original S1000XR since it came to the US and just purchased the 2020 SDGT. I strongly considered another S1000XR (my wife has taken over mine) but I decided to go with the SDGT for something of completely different character. I love both. I also agree with your comparison. Interestingly, they are within about $300 dollars of each other in price here in the US when similarly equipped. Thanks for posting this video.

I think when people are used to a V twin, they tend to ride other bikes like that. Noticed you seemed to twist the throttle a lot at lower revs riding the torque curve like a Vtwin. That's sort of out of its element. When you want to go, you kind of need to spin it in its powerband and keep it on the pipe so to speak. Everything just moves up 2-3 thousand revs or more. Keep it upwards north or 7000 rpms and now you bring out the character of the bike. It can tool around at low rpms without chugging, but when it's time to go, you have to stir the shifter just a bit.

I ride an S1000R and yes, if you never ride above 8,000 rpm you could call them boring... excellent chassis and suspension, great electronics, and like you say, very forgiving. But ride it above 8,000 and it'll put a smile on your dial everytime!
@thelikeablerider88004 жыл бұрын
Exactly that Craig! Hopefully it didn't come across like I was slagging it off, because it's a great bike, but totally different to a vtwin. The bike itself is very comparable with regards to spec and as a sports tourer, but the engines are totally different.

Hi Shaun and thanks for the review. Long story short, I'm coming from a 2019 XR... I tested the 2021 with my wife as passenger and basically had the same feelings as you. Plusher suspensions, and lack of power down in the revs. Seems you can sort that with a smaller pinion... But... Well I'm going for the SDR in the end ^^. The only thing I'm not fully aligned is the seat. My 2019 XR was an "HP", so had the HP seat, and the new standard seat felt firmer. Very good bike overall, but as you said... Maybe a lack of "fun" and "sensations"... ;-)

I really enjoyed the review. Have to agree about the bike being a little boring and that's not meant as a slur on this fabulous bike. It is as you say, does thing a little too well and when I demo'd the previous bike i felt exactly the same about it. I didn't pick up on the famous vibes like others had experienced either and perhaps being a tall rider like yourself could be the reason why? That said, I'm glad i got the KTM Super Duke GT and it does just put a grin on your face when you hear it, ride it and look at it. Yes, its all subjective, but for me the KTM floats my boat.

The buzziness of the older XR was bad for me, I'll have to give the 2020 a ride but the older bike I didn't really see an advantage over the S1000R (I'm not so tall that the R is uncomfortable). Since I was looking for more touring chops the Multistrada was a better choice at the time (I've put in sequential 16 hour days without drama on the Multi... and did a 12,000 mile/3 week/no divided highway tour on it)... but now that I have a adv-sport-touring bike I'm shopping for a weekend warrior where the XR seemed to fit a bit better but I'm not sure why I'd get it over a Super Duke R, Tuono or Streetfighter V4S (or S1000R).

And you can’t compare the 4 Zylinders to the KTMs, totally different riding (just got the S1000R, the SD1290R & now the 1090 AR beside an R1200R). In my opinion, with the new 1290 GT you get more for the money, but if you like it really sporty THIS would be my choice 👌🏻 thx for the well done report 👍🏻🌅

It is relaxed low down, that what I was getting at. If you give it the beans, then it has bags of it👍😜

Is the S900 XR smaller than this?
@thelikeablerider88004 жыл бұрын
Yes it is although haven't chucked leg over that bike, but to look at it's a smaller bike, and would be a great option for the shorter and slightly more civilised rider✌😜

Effortless ride and more power than a typical human can handle (but available when u need it). Why do cars seem to be going a lot slower when riding this bike ?

I ended up buying one this year👍🤣 Check out some of my latest travel vids.

S 1000 XR or Multistrada?
@thelikeablerider88004 жыл бұрын
Now that's a great question! I nearly bought the Multi although again in another price league!

Great video! Pity we didn't see any motorway miles to know what the high speed wind protection and so forth is like. I cant wait to ride one, between this and the 1250GS for me. Dont trust KTM after all the issues I had with my 1190.

Wind protection has always been fine👍😜 although I do little motorway miles

And why the hell would you think the dongle thing would carry over into 2020?? Silly boy, it can be optioned properly into the bike. Besides, Euro5 port is different from Euro5.
@thelikeablerider88004 жыл бұрын
Well done! Maybe you should review the bike? Don't forget that this was only an hour test ride, I don't presume to know the bike inside out! More so to share with viewers about how it rides.

The main question here is: Is this new XR so much better than the old one that it is worth trading?? In my review I answered to this question with 2 different answers: 1) No it is not. Keep the old one and you will be perfectly happy about how great bike it is! 2) Yes it definitely is! The new XR is better in every way. It's lighter, it's easier in corners, it's better in every way so you really should make the update!

It rides better for sure! is it worth the upgrade.........uuuuummmm!!

Looking good!! But way to expensive, here in the Netherlands prices starting from 20.550,-😳 that exhaust looks a lot like a Akrapovic without the branding😅

The price tag is the one factor you'd think twice about, not cheap!

It doesn't win my heart. I had a go at the previous model and loved it, great bike. But they r flipping ugly and I'm afraid the new one is even worst. Just too expensive, not fast enough and above all, ugly af.
@EEEBA14 жыл бұрын
Not fast enough? The XR? I think it is way faster than 99% of riders can fully utilize it properly.
@thelikeablerider88004 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't say it's not fast enough, it has more than plenty!
@EEEBA14 жыл бұрын
@c p I agree. I had the S1000R before the XR. The XR is not a Supersport so there is no very high top end. Most of us spend most of our riding not in the top end range anyway. What are you riding now? Thank you and ride safe.
