Gibson has to be in the team for Guscott. We can debate Dallaglio v Davis or Cotton v Price etc. but Gibson is a shoe-in. The All Blacks were in awe of him and rightly so. One of the greatest centres ever to play the game and a likely starter in most peoples World XV.

You can put Wilkinsons career into 2 stages pre 2003 and post 2003. And without the pre 2003 period its pretty average from an international perspective. By 2005 he had completely fallen off and really souldnt have been on that loins tour he was so many levels below Carter at that point. No where near it in 2009 and in fairness to him turned down a slot in 2013 probably with a word in his ear from the Toulon owner.

Certainly different players for different eras ... Barry John v Wilkinson. It's the beauty of these fantasy teams. You could equally argue that Fran Cotton would have been too tall and Gerald Price would have been a better fit in the front row. However that 2nd row ... what a pairing they would have been.

Your tight 5 is spot on (except it'd leave you without a middle lineout jumper, if they ever played). Hill to 6 (where he played in 2001), and bring in Slattery and Davies at 7 and 8. That pack would never be beaten ...... As for the backs, I'll leave that to others, although I'm sure many will argue for the inclusion of Mike Gibson, JJ Williams, Gerald Davies etc etc, it looks a pretty good selection.

Both legends). 4. Willie John ( has any Lion achieved more)? 5. Martin Johnston (even though I'm Irish he gets the nod of O'Connell and all the rest). 6. Sam Warburton ( can't deny his record). 7. Fergus Slattery / Richard Hill (both immense but Slattery gets the nod because he was the best 7 in the world for a generation) 8. Lawrence Dallaglio / Mervyn Davis ( I go with Dallaglio but its a coin flip. Both legends). 9. Garath Edwards ( no question, and probably one of the 5 greatest players ever to play the game). 10. Jonny Wilkinson / Barry John (they called BJ the king but I would go for Wilkinson. He had everything and tackled like a back row. 11 Tony O'Reilly ( forgotten by many as he played so long ago, but his record is unmatched and still hasn't been beaten). 12 Mike Gibson (Lions legend. Player of the series in NZ in 1971. The All Blacks were in awe of him). 13 Brian O'Driscoll (he could destroy the best planned defence single handed, and often did). 14 Gerald Davies (he would he a star in any generation, even today). 15 JPR. I'd have Hill 6 and Slattery 7.. Hill is the best natural 6 I've ever seen and Slattery the fore runner of modern 7's.. And as much as I loved Gerald Davies, Jason Robinson was unplayable one on one, so he would have to play. Other than that I would select exactly the same side.. Too many youngsters don't realise how good Mike Gibson really was.. With the exception of BOD, and Dani Gerber from SA, the best centre, and played international across the back line.. Possibly the best all round player in history..
@MickyBrownEye1
@MickyBrownEye1 4 жыл бұрын
@@tollyt7465 I agree about hill and, as Warburton was more a 7 than a 6, I would now have a back row or Hill, Dallaglio, Slattery. They would be immense. Jason Robinson was deadly in attack and fearless in defence. He brought that steel from Rugby League as did Scott Gibbs and John Bentley in that great Lions team led by Johnston. So to be fair Jason is probably the better all-round player, but Garald Davis is my indulgence. He ran like a gazelle and was just so graceful.

@@brettwilkinson9529 When I watch test matches from the past it immediately becomes clear that the game was better back then. People like Phil Bennett, Barry John, Gerald Davis, and Mike Gibson had the space to express themselves. The dummy and sidestep was their trademarks and they were the masters. So it's hard to compare today's 'battering-ram' game with the rugby of yesteryear. Thats what makes these comparisons fun.

What does it take to be a lion, first is to be selected many a chosen, what does it take to be a winning lion ? There have been many good and great players that were never selected. Selection is down to the head coach and his senior staff. But once selected what does make a winning Lions tour? Belief and trust in the entire side, a resolute Captain that every player and coach respects (and can hold his field position by right, not just because he’s the captain) the whole squad to believe in the process, and to support those entirely those that are selected for the test side.

Very tough to choose - so many greats. Mike Gibson has to be in though. I think that's the only massive omission. All the others, you can make strong arguments for and against. Barry John v Phil Bennett? If I was picking an all time Welsh XV then King Barry probably gets the nod, but Benny was superb for the Lions... and I'd be tempted to lean in his direction. Fergus Slattery should probably be in there too. Andy Irvine gets the shittiest end of the stick. Fantastic player and a good lion, but not the greatest full back (JPR) and not the greatest winger - but they had to find a place for him because he was that good.

He’s probably the best player to ever play for the lions and I am a Wallabies fan.

He was undoubtedly the best backline player in 2001 and 2009 - two series that could've gone either way.

@@ronansavage7918 Gareth Edwards is the greatest ever player to play for the lions but Barry John is the greatest ever player for the lions, when the new Zealanders call you the king you know it's pretty special. Brian o Driscoll wasn't even that good for the lions.
