Lol I find it funny, that for hundreds of years, mountain men and outdoorsmen used the exact same knife for hunting, bushcraft and self defense. Not to mention military personnel. Use the same knife for everything as well. It’s only been a decade or so that people have become knife snoots, requiring that knives have to have a certain steel , blade shape grinds inc.

I have a Benchmade Hidden Canyon that I’ve used for the last few years, and I’ve been really pleased with. This year I acquired both of the Buck Alpha Pro hunting knives. My first thought is that the Buck knives seem better to be feel better in hand, to me, than my Benchmade, due to the finger choil, jimping, and grip. The Benchmade is a little narrower top to bottom from the blade to spine, so it’s a little more compact. It’s between the two Bucks in size. The Scout is very small, almost to small. It might be good for caping or fine details, hopefully I’ll find out this fall. I can say I’ve use the Benchmade on three elk, two deer, and an oryx, and it’s still sharp with minor sharpening and Stropping. The edge geometry is great. To me, when I think of Buck, I think of hunting and the outdoors. This fall I hope to test out the Buck knives to see if they are as good as my Benchmade.

Different strokes for different folks... My EDC is the ESEE 3 in S35VN and I absolutely love it. Another knife that was a strong contender for being selected as my EDC was the TOPS 3 Pointer which would be a blade design you would prefer over the ESEE 3, unfortunately it is a high carbon steel knife and I really wanted my EDC to have a "better" steel. I agree that Buck is overpricing the Alpha series knives. I have found that many knives which are good "multi-purpose EDC" knives are also excellent hunting knives (and a lot of "hunting" knives are suck). The Spyderco Manix 2, OKC RAT 1, Mora Kansbol, ESEE 3 & IZULA II, and countless other "do it all" knives are exceptionally good hunting knives. Hollow grind knives actually kinda suck for skinning an animal. For skinning, a convex grind is pure perfection. And for everything else, a full flat or high sabre grind outperforms a hollow grind...at least in my experience. The one place where a true "specialty blade" is exceeding desirable is fish...a quality filet knife makes a world of difference.

I have the 113 which is a good little knife and can be custom ordered for just over $100 with S30VN But it has the small handle which makes it hard to draw as an EDC defense and hard to use as an all around work knife However the size and shape are very similar to those at half the price if you have to have a Buck

The hollow grind on a lot of Buck knives is great for meat but bad for wood, so for anyone using their skinners on wood or as a camp knife, the flat grind is definitely going to be more appreciated. I like the look of the Alpha Pro Hunter, but I don't think I can justify the price they have for it. Unfortunately, the improved material versions of Buck knives are priced to where they're in competition with other knives I'm likely going to want more at that price point.

I love the big one. I've been carrying mine in a scout carry sheath from Lionsteel. It's a great EDC knife. Working guys that are equipment operators, or just getting in and out of work trucks don't want to sit on their fixed blade. The scout carry and even more desirable concealed carry cant in leather is the way to go for convenience and access and comfort. I am right handed but carry my blade cross draw, scout carry at the 9:30 to 10 because my firearm is at my 3:30. Knife and sheath makers need to keep that in mind. We are integrating EDC systems, not just 1 tool.

I used to carry a knife everyday when I lived in a farm as a tween and as a teenager, I loved the practicity of the handling and the confidence of knowing it was there by its weight. Once I moved to the city to study I felt pretty much naked, and many times reached for it by my side and it wasn't there. Until today I feel that not carrying a knife is a miss in the city, and am actually looking for a small one that I can carry concealed, but that is useful. If anyone has any tips please tell me

G'day Aaron, nice little cross over jobs mate and S35 is right up my alley. Good examples of why I'm gravitating more towards fixies rather than folders for EDC. Mind you they are asking a decent dollar alright; I would have thought sub-150 USD for the large. To be fair, everything is going up and if you carry it every day, it will pay for itself sooner rather than later. Personally I havent been hunting in many a year, I dont really like game meats to start with, (just give me "properly farmed" beef, lamb, chicken, pork, lol), besides, gun licensing here is a real pain, fishing on the other hand ..... too easy and yummo. Of course you could, though I wouldn't, be using a hunting knife for the job, pays to get a cheap and cheerful Martini, (or similar), filleting knife. Yes it's an extra specialised tool to carry, but so light weight, you wont even notice it in your pack load out. Cheers Duke.

Would you recommend this fixed blade or is there any that are this size that are may be cheaper that are better or is this really good for every day carry EDC because I’ve been looking for a fixed blade that I can carry with me everywhere I go and can be my every day knife

I really like the design, there are plenty of options but few that flow like this in the hand.

@@gideonstactical would you recommend this as an every day EDC I like the smaller version of this knife I wish it was a little bit cheaper do they make a Kydex sheath option for it or is the leather sheath better

Focus on the sheath. A junk sheath relegates a fixed blade to a glove/tool box or stay-at-home letter opener.

Hi, do you still carry your Benchmade Osborne 943?

I do not I trade did that off a while ago. I’d prefer the bail out in M4 steel.

I have a question I live in orange county which is in California I have cold steel raja 2 with a 6in blade its a folding knife does any know if its legal to carry it in California

Legal. A fixed-blade is supposed to be visible. Switchblades and dirks are best left home.

Yeah, the price of either of these is way to high. But Buck seems to over price their knives. Even though, I love Buck knives. Those two are out of my price range.

GTFO for $200... I'd save up and get something in v3 or Magnacut.

Priced a bit high considering market options . Even the Benchmade Steep Country is coming in cheaper . The leather sheaths are driving up the price point . If I didn’t already have the Esee 3 S35vn and Benchmade Steep Country I’d be all over the Alpha . I might pick one up down the road if the price drops a bit .

The only reason I got outside in to nature is to fish and hunt. Sightseeing and tramping are very boring to me. Completely opposite to you it seems, Aaron. :)

About a decade ago, Buck marketed an Ecolite series using a handle material called "Paperstone". Sounds like the same material as "Ridgeline".

The way this dude eats his Kiwis is highly wasteful, overly complicated and frankly not very smart. Not sure if you know this, but you just cut the Kiwi in half, and then you use a small spoon to eat the halves. Be efficient and smart.
