Testing the compatible cartridge family that a .327 Federal Magnum revolver can fire. I am using the Ruger LCR 1.875" bbl for my tests. The ammunition used for testing is the Speer Gold Dot .327 Federal Magnum 100 gr JHP, the Federal Personal Defense .32 H&R Magnum 85 gr XTP and the Magtech .32 S&W Long 98 gr semi jacketed hollow point. Always appreciative of any channel

I incorrectly said that the .32 S&W Long had a different base diameter, while in fact the .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum all share a base and neck diameter of 0.337" so they are all truly the same case size other than length. Now the .32 S&W is the one with different case dimensions because the .32 S&W's base diameter is 0.335" and neck diameter is 0.334", so one more reason to NOT use the .32 S&W. Now with the .32 ACP, it does share the .337" base diameter so the base (not the rim) is closer to the .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Mag and .327 Mag than what the .32 S&W is, however the .32 ACP has a neck diameter of 0..3365" but a bullet diameter of .3125" instead of the others having a bullet diameter of .3120". You can clearly see that the .32 S&W and the .32 ACP have two significant specs each that put them outside of true compatibility, as where the .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Mag and .327 Mag are truly 3 of the same family and all compatible in a .327 Magnum revolver.

Another fine video! I assume that the 32 ACP would be utilizing some kind of "moon clips"; how would that factor in as a safety issue? Seems as if it would shim the case length out a bit. My Webley MK VI was converted to 45 ACP at some point prior to my ownership, and there is a definite shimming effect that was factored in at the time of conversion. Also, what would you say would be the optimum barrel length for these cartridges?

Sam, my references show the 32 S&W with a cylindrical case diameter of .339 and rim diameter of .378 and rim thickness of .054 (not .045 as you stated). The 32 S&W Long, 32 H&R Mag and 327 Federal all show rim diameters of .375, rim thickness of .337 and cylindrical case diameters of .055. All four of these cartridges are derived from the 32 S&W. In terms of SAAMI specs they are loaded to pressures of 13,900 (CUP), 13,900 (CUP), 21,000 (CUP) and 45,000 (PSI) respectively. The 32 ACP is the oddball with a base diameter of .3373 tapering to .3365 and a rim diameter of .358 and thickness of .045. Its SAAMI maximum pressure is 16,900 (CUP). As you said, there is a headspace problem trying to fire the 32 ACP in any revolver, since both the rim thickness and diameter are incorrect. The rim diameter could also cause extraction issues. In my opinion the worst idea is trying to fire the 32 ACP in either 32 S&W (short) or 32 S&W Long revolvers, especially older top break revolvers, many of which were originally proofed for black powder. Fortunately the 32 ACP won't chamber in many of the old 32 S&W top breaks. Despite some minor differences, I believe the 32 S&W is safe in any 32 S&W Long, 32 H&R Magnum, or 327 Federal. The question is, what are you really getting by doing that? The 32 ACP, in my opinion, should not be fired in any of these revolvers. Given the long jump from the case mouth to the rifling due to cylinder dimensions, the loss of pressure there and due to the barrel/cylinder gap, and the loss of accuracy and velocity, it really makes no sense to do it.

Thomas L Lots of detailed info, nice! However, I believe he referenced in the first part of the video the difference between the written research he studied; and actual rim and case diameters of current real world loadings as being significantly divergent enough to consider that as having more merit on the real measurable loadings, vs the written reference. Of course I do not know if you both reference the exact same material. I have shot all 5 out of a 4” .327mag sp101; however the old .32 S&W reg (short) and long boxed ammo was considerably more dirty, enough to say “yup, it will shoot them if an emergency forced it; but the smoke and filth sent me back into my .32 H&R mag and .327 Boxes after just a cylinder of the tamer old loads!

Thank you Sam. I'm giving the 32 revolver rounds another look. It's been about 30 years since I traded my 32 H&R magnum and with the advent of the 327 magnum you have demonstrated some impressive performance. It would have been interesting to see the 32 H&R magnum with the Gold Dot ammo if they make it.

As info, back in the dark ages, the .32 long FULL WADCUTTER was the best manstopper in that caliber, as none of the hollowpoints tested (this was mid - 1980s) would expand unless they hit a rock. Not enough speed to actually expand. The wadcutters would penetrate 14 - 18 inches fairly consistently. The H&R Magnum was a huge improvement.

The .32 S&W impressed me as a great round for a low recoil snubby. The .32 H&R suffers from the XTP bullet which needs a higher velocities, it suffers in .38Spl as well. The .327 Mag, should be more popular as it is quite the round. Great info Sam.

Thank you. I have tried the American Gunner .38 Special with the XTP and have often wondered why make that load. Now the XTP in a 125 gr for reloading .38 Special is excellent and a great plinker, just not going to do well if expansion is intended.

Thanks for the analysis. It's so hard to find information about real differences between cartridges, like the rim thickness you mentioned. You also mention how loud the rounds are. Sound and muzzle blast aren't popular topics but are very important to consider. Consider the worst case scenario, like shooting in a dark hallway, not just outdoors with ear protection. No one gets to use ear (or eye) protection in a split second self defense scenario. No one anticipates being temporarily blinded or deafened by their own weapon, but they probably should.

Thanks for this, Gun Sam. I love my Ruger SP101 .327 with a 3" barrel which has much less recoil than your Ruger LCR. I keep it loaded with Hydro Shok 85 grain .327 magnum SJHP. In bear country or wild boar country I would use American Eagle .327 magnum 100 grain, and when I get old I'll use .32 S&W long. I hope this great gun will become more popular so the ammo will be more available locally, but the ammo can be found online. Revolvers rule!

Thanks for your hard work. I never really took the .32 acp and s&w short seriously out of the lcr (x) other than a novelty. The s&w long is really good news. That surprised me. Just goes to show you the correct bullet design weight and powder load combined together break some of the; most intuitive assumptions. Forget arthritis and old bones it is great to have a light weight snub that you can unload six super controlable good performing rounds in a defensive situation without apprehension of sound and blast, not that you would be thinking about that under stress but you never know. Dare I say also affordable, atleast on line. Another great thing is you can carry 4 s&w longs and two. 327 mags at the end of that sentence. For the price point h&r mags are pricey and not that impressive. If I find them I'll usually take them though. I guess there's a reason why 32s&w long was a favorite round for many, for almost 100 years. Overall underrated revolver platform with a plethora of options, glad I highly rated it and got one lol.

I agree with your idea of carrying 4 longs and 2 327's. That's how I would carry. Back when I carried a 340PD I loaded it with 3 38's and a 357 ad the last round. The lighter rounds give you good control and follow up shots, while you have the 357 power available if the fight lasts that long. The blast and recoil of the 357 also gives a clear indication that you are out of ammo in the heat if the moment

Appreciate the revolver love on your channel and your 327 vids are one reason I picked up a 327 LCR-X(I like hammers on my revolvers). I have to say though that it's nearly impossible to find 32 ammo in the middle of Florida. I'm basically taking up reloading just for this caliber. As for 32 SW short, one reason to shoot it is that it'd be slightly cheaper to reload for(half the powder), pretty easy to throw cast lead out of(real low velocities) and just a fun little light popper of a cartridge to toss at cans. According to my Lyman book, 32 short is safe to shoot out of 32 long chambered guns. Though the case specs there are different than what you seem to be measuring out in the real world. When my Starline brass gets delivered I'll take some measurements of those cases and see if they match my Lyman book specs: 0.54 rim and 0.339 base/neck. Hopefully it's good brass and it's just the ammo manufacturers being cheap. Anyway, keep up the great work on your videos. They're appreciated.

Thanks! I do reload ammo but I have been putting off getting a .32 caliber die set until I have a good .32 caliber brass supply. From what I understand there is no .327 Magnum dies specifically with most companies, but you can easily reload .327 on the .32 H&R dies along with the others (I believe). I guess one advantage of a .32 S&W also would be you could probably not even crimp them lol, not enough recoil to cause the bullets left in the gun to do anything.
@MarkTarsis
@MarkTarsis 4 жыл бұрын
@@GunSam Hey, I wanted to follow up on this as I got my Starline Brass in today. 327, 32 H&R Mag, SW Long and SW Short are all measuring 0.334 diameter and 0.052 rim on their brass. Overall length on each is 1.194, 1.071, 0.913 and 0.598. My measurements might be a tad under on each dimension because I'm applying a good deal of force on the calipers and that might be throwing the zero off a tad. But in the least it's showing that Starline 32 Short is measuring the same as the other pistol calibers for rim/diameter. So reloads on that brass should be good to go.

Up to the 1960's a number of center fire mid-caliber target shooters utilized revolvers ( particularly the Smith K-32 ) in .32 long in America. A very select few opted for expensive import auto loaders. Even Elmer Keith saw reason for the continued existence of the .32 Long as a target and short range small game round. In his era, he considered the only .32 caliber round worthy of self defense from a revolver was the 32-20.

If you’re on the fence about this round because of ammo availability, here are my thoughts based on current events. Right now we’ve got the big toilet paper shortage going on: people panicked and bought everything in sight, not just one brand, color scent, whatever. So my takeaway is if you want a supply of ammo in a crisis, you’ll want to buy it in advance no matter what caliber; if panic buying kicks in, the shelves will get cleaned out, period. As I write this, scalpers are selling toilet paper on Facebook Marketplace, and they’d probably be doing something similar with ammo. So with .32/.327, you have to plan ahead on ammo purchases and probably purchase online even in good times, and you should stock up in advance in case of bad times. Regarding the cost difference between this and 9mm, there isn’t a whole lot of difference in cost for premium self-defense rounds, considering the number of rounds you’ll actually shoot. In practice rounds, you can get .32 wadcutters starting at $.30 per round, and you’ll tend to shoot fewer rounds more carefully out of a wheelgun than out of a high-capacity 9mm.

@@thefusilier4702 As the previous owner of that revolver the only thing I can say slightly negative about LCRs in general is that they are harder to reload with speed loaders due to the minimal size of the cylinder and the larger grip. 5 Star makes speed loaders specifically for the 327 Ruger and they work ok.

I have two 327 revolvers, LCR and SP 101. Both were lower quality pistols (in manufacturing quality, customer support particularity awful on the SP 101). Spent about $150 fixing the bent parts on the SP101, two returns to Ruger, unimpressed with their “workmanship. Almost gave up on the 327, but started shooting and reloading a lot after fixing the SP, and just fell in love with the options, especially with the 32 H&R. The LCR has a great trigger, and its amazingly easy to draw, shoots very accurately. Now, looking for Smith in 32 H&R.

I pretty much already said everything in the Patreon viewing, but I wanted to just give this video some added support for the channel, so here I am :). Likes, views, and comments right Sam? Anyway, I think that .32 S&W Long is seriously impressive for what it is, but the H&R Mag. was just the opposite. I thought it would be a close contender for the .327, not just a slightly more potent S&W Long. That H&R needs an easier to expand bullet like the Long has. I fully expected good things from the .327 so I'm not surprised it performed really well. For me it's a contest between the .327 Fed. Mag. and the .38 Spl.+P. (with a good load of course). Please keep these .32 cal. videos coming Sam, I especially like to see these things that others don't cover so much, it's one of the great things about this channel.

The XTP bullet is primarily designed for hunting. I have no idea why Federal loads this in a self defense pistol cartridge. You can be sure though that the XTP 32 H&R Magnum round will easily defeat any heavy clothing as well as bone. As they say, over penetration will get you sued, but under penetration will get you killed.
@GunSam
@GunSam 4 жыл бұрын
As pointblank said, the bullet is a hunting bullet and not ideal for 2 legged beasts. I think the reason why the XTP bullet is used is that there really are not enough cost effective options for a mainstream company to use. For instance on Midwayusa's reloading section, the only hollow point .312" bullets are the XTP and the Sierra Sports Master 90 gr SJHP (which would be excellent instead of the XTP), but looking at the price of $25.99 for 100 of the Sierra VS $19.99 for 100 XTP's, it's obvious that Federal just took the cheap option as why not, the .32 H&R is on the verge of being a cult following/obsolete creation. I see this with a lot of rounds that were never around long enough to be classics or overly popular, but then overshadowed by something similar but more powerful which destroys that cartridge. I see it with cartridges that seem to be a great idea but are not practical and the classic version makes a comeback and overshadows the cartridge that could be great. The .32 S&W Long is a great classic but the .327 Mag is "better" so goodbye .32 H&R, or the .45 ACP is a classic, and the .45 GAP seemed great but now days 9mm is more practical so going to a .45 caliber is a nostalgia thing, so there's no practical use for the .45 GAP. I could probably come up with 20 more examples if I got on WIKI and started scrolling the handgun cartridge list of all cartridges ever created.

I've been carrying the LCR 327 close to three years and I think it's a great carry gun. I actually split loaded I have the first three bullets as 32 h&r mags and the last as the 327 s. Since most gun exchanges are over in two or three bullets I believe that the accuracy of the 32 h & R's provide a big benefit. Also the sound from the 327 coming out of the LCR is absolutely deafening. I hope I never reach the last three in a gun exchange. at the range shooting this gun actually disturbs the people next to me even though they have hearing protection if I have it loaded with the 327. despite all of this I think it's a darn good carry gun and one you can depend on to go bang when you pull that trigger. I really enjoyed the video and thank you for the comparison. I pity those poor Bologna's may they rest in peace.

I now carry this .327 mag. It took some time, but after doing a number of more tests, reloading the .32 H&R, and shooting at long range I have found that the .327 Mag is literally the best carry cartridge out there. I carry light .327's in the range of high end .32 H&R, the takeaway of the .327 snub is that it's basically as good as a 9mm for ballistics, but with less recoil, more reliability and more reliable hollow point expansion. It possesses every positive attribute you want in a carry cartridge even down to having decent capacity at 6. I can take out this LCR and wildly fire at 7 yards and place all my shots in maybe a 12" pattern, which don't sound impressive but in the real world doing something like that with no control over the gun and still getting that is unheard of. Other guns in the same size range would be like 3 on a full size silhouette and the rest misses.

After more than half a century I finally figured it out... If you're old enough, you remember that the Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and most of the heroes on TV and in cowboy movies, would all THROW the bullets out of their guns. I always wondered why, but now I know. The guns were all in .32 S&W Long and therefore needed that little bit of extra help to make it out the end of the barrel!!!

Another excellent video! Thanks for this one! As I've said before, the .32 is close to my heart and my current J-frame is a 6-shot in .32 S&W Long. I have a spare cylinder (I used to buy up parts like crazy long ago) that I've contemplated having reamed to .32 H&R (if memory serves, it only needs about .155" greater depth to chamber .32 H&R and I've heard rumors of some escaping the factory long ago that will Juuuusssst take a .32 H&R but never seen such). Anyway, after watching this, I think I'll just save that money and put it in the "buy the lightest .38 airlight I can find and afford" fund. I was VERY impressed with that Magtec .32 S&W Long round! I honestly expected no expansion but it did quite a bit of alright. A quick check online and I see them available for between $22 and $25 for a box of 50 (where available ... they apparently sell out quickly ... gee, I wonder why). That puts it really not much more than the cheapest RNL rounds and cheaper than some others. I'm still betting on these 115 gr hard cast lead flat points because I've seen them tumble so readily in water jugs, but I'm gonna see if I can find any of those Magtec JHPs around in any local shops too. Oh, you made some excellent points so I stand corrected on the .32 S&W (not long) comment from a while back. I based my experience on older ammo and manuals. I wasn't aware that industry standard was loading them with thinner rims now. In any case, you're right that even if it was a viable alternative round, most likely you aren't going to find them anywhere you can't find .32 S&W Long or .32 H&R. If one were in a terrible situation of needing his/her .32 revolver to go bang and could only lay hands upon .32 S&W rounds, I suspect they'd have much greater concerns than potentially piercing a primer on a very low pressure round, anyway. I have a Colt Police Positive in .32 Colt New Police (.32 S&W Long ... Colt wasn't about to put "S&W" on their barrel). It came to me with what I suppose is an out-of-spec firing pin as I found after shooting it WAY more fouling than I expected and upon inspecting the fired cases, found nearly every primer was pierced. Yet I was not burned and my glasses had no discernible extra bits of nastiness thereupon. Still, though, not a good thing at all and there's no need to fool with rounds that have that potential! Long, long ago I carried .32 acp round in my aforementioned j-frame .32. My old dept issued some good .32 acp ammo for backup guns so as it was essentially free ammo and worked in my gun (I ran a box through it to be sure), I used it. But I found reliability was very dependent upon brand (most worked but some did not). This of course meant I might have a box that worked but the next box from a different lot number might not so ... yeah ... silly idea on my part.
@GunSam
@GunSam 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I think I may try some .32 ACP and .32 S&W at some point as people will probably want to see what I think. You're probably right about brand as primers can vary. If I were going to fire .32 ACP i'd probably do Federal as their primers are soft and what tuned out lightened revolvers prefer, so I would imagine they would be more reliable. I saw this same thing yesterday on a video, a guy was shooting .380 through a 9mm revolver and sure enough, some failed due to the same headspace/rim issue being further away, but the Federal ammo he tried all went bang as where others did not!
@CeltKnight
@CeltKnight 4 жыл бұрын
@@GunSam - Interesting. IIRC, the .32 acp round that worked in my revolver were Gold Dots and I THINK federal (and maybe WWB) FMJs worked for the limited amount of shooting I did. PPU ammo, however, had a significant failure rate of one or two per cylinder not going bang. Between ammo variances and variances in the specs of individual guns, it's all a hit-or-miss thing I'd assume. And man, .32 acp rattles like crazy when carried in a .32 S&W L revolver due to those thinner rim. LOL, almost gives it away that you're carrying. ;) Now days I like to think I'm more wise and save the .32 ACPs for my semi-autos and the .32 S&W (not longs) for my old break-top S&W Safety Hammerless.

In my experience, when the .327 Federal Mag gets into similar energy to a true snub .357 Mag like this .327 Federal Gold Dot does, the recoil is only a tiny amount less than .357 Mag. However, with normal low end .357 Mag VS mid range .327 Mag where both push out around 350 ft lbs energy, at that point the .327 Federal Mag has significantly less recoil than anything in it's power class even less than a similar weight 9mm pistol.

Your reasoning is sound and your explanations clear and on point. But I disagree with the exclusion of the 32 S&W short. The Short has always been considered an acceptable substitute in revolvers chambered in 32 Long. This was even with revolvers with fixed firing pins and firing pins now are generally floating which reduces the chances of piercing. Add the fact that the Short only reaches 650 fps with an 88 grain bullet - Its not a high pressure round. In fact it's considered an obsolete cartridge. You are quite right about cost. A box of Shorts runs $35/50 - if you can find them. Longs are about half that. The only real reason for using Shorts is to bring a new shooter along who is recoil sensitive, so they can transition to better cartridges without developing bad habits. Yes, about the 32 acp. Yes, they will fire, but I don't know anyone who is knowledgeable who considers the practice a good idea.

The issue I have with .32 S&W Short beyond the rim thickness is that the base and neck diameter are .035" and .034" as where the .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R and .327 all have a rim and neck diameter of .037". I know this is splitting hairs but I feel like it's not truly compatible even if it fires fine.

Revolvers are awesome like that. I also like how the .357 can chamber 4 cartridges but both platforms are not even for ammo availability. Of course .357/.38 is by far more popular than .327/.32 H&R, however going down the .32 S&W Long, that one is 20 times more available than .38 Long Colt and .32 ACP is probably 10 times more available than .38 Short Colt

Sam that was well informative not many people would have taken the time let alone research the spec's of each cartridge to really determine whether the .32 a.c.p and .32 s&w were safe to fire safely in the revolver designed to fire a cartridge with a rim thickness smaller than that of the 3 .32 caliber cartridges mentioned and most likely the shooter using the .32 a.c.p and .32 s&w were using factory ammo which resulted in a very modest loading, had somebody hand loaded those cartridges to a max charge could of had different results, as always Sam great video's with your .32 caliber series BTW you may want to look up the history of the arming of police in the U.S.A starting in 1896 in new York city by our then former president city police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt arming and starting a firearms training program that the rest of the big cities in the u.s would follow..all were issued the colt 4" bbl .32 s&w long with a 98gn lead RN cartridge until about 1920's when the police felt they needed more stopping power and switched over to the .38 spl. thou the .38 spl was used way before that during the beginning of the 20th century but the .32 long was not entirely fazed out from police duty just yet.

Weird tidbit: SAAMI pressures for the old 32 S&W are actually higher than the 32 S&W Long. I load 32 S&W for some old top-breaks in that caliber, so I mic'ed the rim thickness on some of my brass just to see if I could run it in my 327 without worrying about primer setback or piercing. Vintage Remington brass (circa 1960s/1970s), and it measured .043", so it is fine for use in other 32-chambered firearms, but obviously there can be dramatic variations in dimensions by manufacturer and date, so your advice to steer clear of the mouse cartridges is solid for the average shooter. I figure the ACP and 32 S&W are best relegated to "SHTF" duty if nothing more appropriate is available.
