there is actually a neat trick i learned about how to not fall for conscious breathing. right before they finish saying it, do a closed mouth inhaling yawn. (basically force yourself to yawn but keep your mouth closed.) and tell yourself that it's not. the result is your breathing stifles, and you end up tricking your mind into going into breathing autopilot literally because the exhale after the yawn is a reflex.
