One of great railroad routes in the world. This film was done in 2009, one of the last busy years for this route. That's because the Union Pacific Railroad made the Donner Pass tunnel larger so it would accomodate the container trains and now many of those trains go over Donner Pass, not down the Feather River. You can still see trains there, such as coal and grain and manifests, but not the heavy traffic you'll see in this program. Thanks for enjoying it!

Used to love walking the tracks through uninhabited areas. Just enjoying the quiet and solitude of being alone with my thoughts and at peace from the cluttered world.

I used to go trout fishing on the Feather, mostly the tributary streams. Chips creek, Chambers creek, Spanish creek and a nice inflow just about under the trestle at Tobin. Can't remember the name of it. Hung out a bit at Tobin when it was in business. Not a bad watering hole. Hauled lumber out of Quincy for a good many years. The Feather River highway was about as interesting for an 18 wheeler as the railroad was for a locomotive. Rocks! Damned rocks and slides. As they said, slow going. Well, no point in trying to hurry, there was always another corner ahead. Rode the California Zephyr to Chicago, lo those many years ago. Army days back in the early 60s. Train ticket from Sacramento to Ayer, Mass was $78.00 if I recall correctly. Brings back some memories. Drinking gin with the off duty conductor(?) in a forward car heading down the Eastern slope of the Continental Divide. Asked him how fast we were going and he said about 103-105 mph on that stretch. I was impressed. Changing trains in Chicago. Ah hell, wish that I could do it all over again.

+Mick Carson You'd probably need more than one 4 X 8 plywood. I made a Tehachapi Loop with 'N' gauge and had a heck of a time making it work. Should have gone with an 8 X 8. No room though.

that Y bridge at the end is pretty cool, with both roads using it simultaneously and the modified tunnel portal being blasted to fit the newer intermodal double stacks. Thats kinda interesting details of anyone ever wanted to model this area. The dual wye bridge would be a really cool model.

I up voted this. I don't know why anyone would down vote it. I've been a lover of railroads for 61 years since I was 3, and left New York City on a train for Cleveland Ohio powered by a steam locomotive. Even at that age I was so awestruck at the locomotive it was burned into my memory.
