0:30 The Weltmeister Basset was a product from East Germany. It was related to the electric piano "Claviset" and there was fixed dynamic. It was working like a music box.

Let's not forget the UNIVOX Compac Piano used onstage by Edgar Winter and Billy Preston in the '70's. Plus the ARP 2600, used by Edgar Winter on Frankenstein. The keyboard was separate from the synth and was easily worn around the neck. These are the first examples I can think of of anyone playing a vertical keyboard in concert. Plus Jan Hammer chopped the keyboard off his MiniMoog so he could do the same thing. Also the MicroMoog was light enough to put around your neck as well (I did this a few times back in the day!) Great video!

Fun vid! Didn't see my Unisynth XG-1m in there though 😭. I believe made by Suzuki / licensed out to Mitsubishi (?) c.1981. Has real steel strings to strum and a rubberised touch sensitive fretboard. Pretty cool (assuming rubber hasn't gone sticky now, which fortunately mine hasn't as yet ...) 🎹

Interesting with respect to how each country has its own shape aesthetics. France...hunh? Italy...arrrgh! Japan...actually got better over the years. I'm partial to Germany, Russia and in most cases USA shapes. Nice vid.

I dabbled in keyboard during 80's and 90's so was aware of many of these but some I never heard of, pretty interesting. Had no idea Russia produced some. At first I was thinking, oh come on no demo's? But when I saw the sheer volume and how many different ones I understood that would be hours long and many probably would difficult if not impossible to hunt down.

Hey folks, synth nerd ,keys player and card carrying keytar owner since '86 here. Cool presentation and all, especially the earlier entries but lets get real..... the damn Omnichord is NOT a keytar! Barely an instrument. A lot of the smaller mono synths (e.g. CS01) that were shown are also NOT keytars. Saw strap cleats on poly 800 and such and were used as 'shoulder synths' but still not keytars. Great topic though. Own your inner dork! Happy shredding.

Wow, the Alesis Vortex has aftertouch? I have to check it out. So far, my all time favorite has always been Yamaha KX5. Have two of those. One so MINT, I am afraid to touch it. The other one, gets a lot of workout. To me, making a strap-on keyboard (I dispise of name keytar very much) without aftertouch on the keys should be a crime...

1. Omnichords aren't keytars. 2. It is spelled "Modulation" not Modylation. I had several of these...the Poly 800, the Sh-101, the CZ-101, and I still have a CS-01 and a KX-5.

I dunno . . . most of these through about 1983 don't qualify as a keytar in my book. Many of these are simply keyboards that have strap buttons on them. A keytar is supposed to be a hybrid of a keyboard instrument and a guitar, and what is the characteristic of a guitar? It has a neck, giving the musician something important to do with their left hand. No neck, no function for left hand, no keytar.
