Male cicadas are so loud that they have an adaptation to disengage their own tympanic membranes (bug ears) because their cry is so loud that they would otherwise deafen themselves
@evangeloevoxi6 ай бұрын
There is no reason for cicadas to be as loud as they are. We have MILLIONS of cicada shells in our yard and woods, and hundreds of thousands of cicadas flying around here and it's deafening if I go near the woods 😭 my poor head is always hurting lol. I'm glad my dog has been helping by hunting them but even she's getting tired of them lmao

⚠️Watch out with your 🐶 if she feels defeated, she may join them!
@evangeloevoxi6 ай бұрын
@@horaciokanashiro-hv2zn I'm confused by your wording. I have an XL dog, and she's good with my "leave it" command. So I let her snack on them for a while then tell her to leave it and she won't eat them. I think she understands too many upsets her tummy, because now she doesn't eat them as much as she did when the cicadas first emerged 😅

@@horaciokanashiro-hv2zn thank you for the warning though! I make sure my pup doesn't eat too many 💜💙💚

Crickets produce the chirping sound by rubbing part of the front wing against part of the back. Not with their legs. Edit: My bad it's actually just both of the front wings
@jeremyweitendorf67236 ай бұрын
^^^ I worked with crickets this past semester, and I really wanted to see them chirping in person. It’s difficult because they usually stop chirping if they see you coming up to them. I finally got to see it, and it’s so cool how their two wings rub against each other because you wouldn’t expect that small of a movement to make such a prominent sound

It's a common misconception but I'm still surprised it was left in
@Epoch116 ай бұрын
Wrong they don't rub their back legs together, they have specialty adapted little scrapers that actually make the noise.

I'm curious if the two "speakers" on each cicada are tuned to the same, or different frequencies. Like a car horn has two tones to get attention better than a single one.

When cicadas make noise because they're mating, doesnt that mean they're just moaning in insect language?

You know nothing about that noise they make. A few years ago, they came out in droves. We had 4 cycles of that sound. 1 cycle would start as one ended. For 4 rotations every day from dawn til dusk, and even at night, for 5 weeks straight. All you could hear outside my house was their sound. It took me 2 weeks to finally be able to sleep with out there sound after wards.
