I think the people that really love Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, or like me. We are in the age group that grew up with the animated series and he is very much that character. I do agree that the villain is underwhelming, but also knowing they were going to make multiple movies, I don’t think you have the best villain first you build to it.

It was brilliant making both Peter and Gwen smart. Gwen, not only being smart, but willful, was an attraction for me. The casting of Emma Stone was genius. Every time she was on-screen, I was mesmerized. I love that she didn't need to be "rescued." Stone's quick response to Peter in the hallway, "Yeah, either one," and her chuckle on the balcony, when she turned to look at Peter, were so natural and real. Thanks for leaving in one of the best lines, "Oh, I'm in trouble." Finally, Stone's performance in trying to not smile and failing in the classroom at the end was really well done. :)

In the comics, Flash eventually becomes Peter's best friend, so it's cool that these films don't have him as completely irredeemable.

Yeah I loved that as well. In the comics it was the early 70's so Flash came back after serving in Vietnam and was a much more mature and layered character. And for myself it resonated because after high school I ran into a couple of people who really gave me a tough time but then later were more mature and we were able to put the past behind us.

I'll have more to add later, but right now I'm just watching part of this before I go somewhere, so I'll just drop this one tidbit: Curt Connors is actually in the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies as well, where he is played by Dylan Baker. Whether or not he would've turned into The Lizard at some point, had the series continued, who knows, but you can tell it's him by his missing arm.

Great reaction! Andrew is such a fantastic casting choice. I watched his movies after the first two Tom Holland films (I just never saw them available on streaming etc). All three actors bring different best parts of Spidey out and I really appreciate that.
@markmcgee24178 ай бұрын
Im really glad that this film actually brought in the Lizard because the Raimi films set up Dr. Connors but never did anything with him. I think Raimi was planning on having him flesh out in Spider-Man 3 but the studio pushed Venom so hard that he had to go with that character instead or have too many villains for one film.

Having also watched and enjoyed The Toby Maguire ones as a teen/adult, I wasn't sure when I heard about the AG ones if if like them but then I saw it and I grew to enjoy his take on Peter/Spiderman. I loved the chem and connection between him and Emma s Gwen and just the way he plays on Peters goofy /Awkwardness. Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Uncle Ben (With great reactions comes more subscribers lol) was perfect casting. I've enjoyed Denis Leary since I saw him in Rescue me. Also C Thomas Howell the dad of the little boy is in two 80s movies that I loved The Outsiders and Red Dawn, he s also well known for being (I don't know if you ve watched Criminal Minds) playing the main unsub. Random info dump lol I grew up with Spiderman comics and read The famous Gwen Stacy comic (thank goodness you're on the 2nd film) I'll continue this thought rather in the next film reaction. My uncle wrote Stan Lee a letter as a teenager and Drew Spiderman (unfortunately that artistic ability didn't pass to me) my favorite comic book character next to Batman. Cause of his Rogues Gallery. This movie takes a lot from the ultimate spiderman comics, the oscorp stuff, and the uncle Ben speech about responsibility is word by word the same from the comics, in the comics Peter joined the basketball team when he get the powers so it's nice they made a little reference, also I love this version of flash so much, and also Sally field and Mr sheen as May and Ben are just perfect, the cast in this movie is just great! Also this two movies got the best CGI and the best spider swinging, and the second have the best Spidey suit in my opinion, I know the second is not that great but I still love it so much

I grew up with Toby’s films in elementary, Andrew’s came out while I was in middle school and Tom’s films came out in high school (NWH after I graduated from it). I grew up with all 3 basically and though I have fond memories of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, TASM 1 and 2 have always been the films I keep coming back to. I just love Andrew’s portrayal of Peter/Spidey, and the chemistry between him and Emma is just incredible. Something about these films just has me in a chokehold and idk how to explain it but I love them. Also Andrew’s suit in the 2nd film is absolute fire. My favorite suit out of all the live actions for sure🔥

Another movie I was neutral on at first then later fell in love with. That's on me. I was a Tobey fan so.. Even still, I really loved the action scenes. I started reading more of the comics. I did a rewatch and now I love these. Lol. The Amazing movies out of all of them are in more in line with the comics. The others mixed things around especially the Tom movies. These emotional scenes are top notch. People complained about how Peter is portrayed but he comes off as more of a loner nerd to me. The Spider-Man quips hit more. Very Underrated

A lot of people dislike the look of the Lizard's face. There was a real epidemic in CGI characters at this time to anthropomorphize them. They did it here with the Lizard, Michael Bays Ninja Turtles, and a few other films. Thankfully they've started to realize that they don't have to look human to be relatable.

Spider-Man movies do have a similar format but there are subtle differences. Toby Spider-Man is revenge of the nerd told through the lenses of a 60s comic book .Andrew Spider-Man is an outsider uncomfortable in his own because his real skin is when he's in the Spider-Man suit and Tom Spider-Man is a coming of age overarching storyline told throughout the MCU with his origin being told over the course of every appearance he's made in Marvel phases 3 through 4. Also Norman Osborn wasn't a good person he was a corporate tyrant an absentee father. Who made it seem like everything he was doing was necessary sacrifice for his son future open Norman Osborne and the goblin. It truly was for Norman's own legacy. Green goblin is a great villain he very entertaining like Batman Joker but he's not that much of a threat to Spider-Man. Now he's definitely the most dangerous out of all of Spider-Man villains just not to Spider-Man life but he is the most dangerous to his loved ones. Because if you notices in the spider man movies the villains don't go straight for family members like goblin. Sandman wouldn't because of his own child doc Ock only would if you get in his way the lizard would rather turn you into his own kind then kill you. Goblin is the only one who would immediately go for your family instead of his enemies.
@KthulhuXxx8 ай бұрын
That's my biggest issue with the Raini / Dafoe version of Norman Osborn - he should be an evil, dangerous man BEFORE he gets a whiff of the Goblin formula. I also hate the whole "have the hero's archenemy be in the first movie, with most of the story devoted to the origin story, and then kill the archvillain at the end" thing that tends to make movie versions of the better comic book villains so watered down.

I love that Gwen was used in this film instead of MJ. Gwen is seen as Peters first serious relationship. Peter and Gwen met during his first year at Empire State University in The Amazing Spider-Man #31 (1963). MJ was introduced later in The Amazing Spider-Man #25 (June 1965) but her face was obscured, only seen by Liz Allan and Betty Brant who both mentioned how attractive MJ looked. It wasn't until Amazing Spider-Man #42 (November 1966) that Peter along with the audience would meet MJ for the first time when Aunt May invited her over to meet Peter. You wouldn't know it from the films but the more iconic Spider-Man characters were not introduced until Peter started College. So MJ, Gwen, Harry, and Norman were not introduced until Peter was a little older during his early college years. I guess in the Rami films Peter left High School not long into the film so close enough. Speaking of Betty Brant played by Elizabeth Banks in the Rami films and Angourie Rice in the MCU. Betty is actually Peters first girlfriend with the two dating for a while during High School but later breaking up and remaining close friends. Betty would later go on to date Ned Leeds who you know from the MCU. Liz Allan is also a minor love interest of Peter and Flash Thomas in the comics, animated shows etc. Liz also showed up in the Homecoming played by Laura Harrier who Peter had a crush on before she left the State. Not a big fan of the Spider-Man suit mostly the yellow eyes and some texture on the suit itself. But it's a good depiction of a more gritty and ragefully Spider-Man in terms of the visual design of the suit itself. Less of a Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man look. I also love that he makes his own web shooters like Tom Holland, Tom's Spider-Man makes his own web fluid though. Toby benefits from having Organic web shooters but we saw what happens when you doubt yourself in Spider-Man 2 and start losing your powers. The idea of connecting Peter to Oscorp is pulled from the Ultimate Universe where Norman was trying to re-create the Super-Solider Serum that gave birth to Captain America. Creating the OZ Formula that was then injected into Spiders with one of these biting Peter Parker. In the mainline comics Peter was just at a science expo when a spider was caught in a radiation test at this public exhibition. Nothing to do with Oscorp at all. Another aspect pulled from the Ultimate Universe is Peter's Parents being scientists. And I guess Gwen being a High School student alongside Peter is also pulled from the Ultimate Universe as she wasn't introduced until his college years. But the Rami films did this as well by having MJ and Harry be high school friends of Peter.
@DapoOlasiyan8 ай бұрын
Totally agree with you @littlegalaxyboy. I have always been slightly miffed that a lot of the films went straight to MJ as the love interest

I think Tobey Maguire was a better Peter Parker because he sort of embodied the “nerdy” characteristics of Peter Parker better than Andrew Garfield. But, I think Andrew Garfield was a better Spider-Man than Tobey Maguire because he really embodied the “mouthy”, “talkative” characteristics of Spider-Man. In the comics, Peter Parker’s first big relationship was with Gwen Stacy, and her father was a Captain with NYPD that died. Also, I agree with you about The Lizard’s face wasn’t very good, it just didn’t fit the whole thing.
@newairnation62808 ай бұрын
I feel like Tobey was too passive in the role though. In the comics, Peter became way more confident and charismatic before he even got out of high school. Meanwhile Tobey never really came out of his shell in the same way; especially in the first two movies he felt more like Clark Kent than Peter Parker a lot of the time.

🕷🕸 I'll use your emojis. Okay... growing up in the 60's and 70's my favorite comic book hero was Spiderman. Hands down. Ironic, really, because I am unabashedly arachnophobic. It's an irrational fear. I can't stand them. And, yet... I love Peter Parker. Always have. So... the origin stories are always tough for me, because I get the willies when I see the actual creatures represented on screen. But, then the charm of the character wins out. I'm thankful it's not like The Fly. So, Toby Maguire is my favorite Spiderman. Tom Holland does a really good job. He's got more of the gee-whiz that Toby and Andrew both seem to lack. But, Toby is still my favorite. Then Tom. Then Andrew. These movies are okay, but not great. I don't rewatch them often. I like your assessment of the villain. The way you were saying it reminded me of the rhyme of the little girl who a little curl right in the middle of her forehead. The villain, when he was good, he was very, very good, but when he was bad, he was horrid! Ah, well. As always, thank you for the watch. I will be looking forward to whatever you're watching next. I hope you're having a good year so far! (And, thank you for the well wishes. I'm feeling much better. It always takes me a long time to bounce back after a cold. But, I'm okay now. Thanks!)
