For 78 rpm folks, that variable speed slider is a godsend. According to the late great 78 collector, Joe Bussard, records made prior to about 1930 were recorded at speeds slightly below 78. The slider lets us play 78s at the proper speed as needed. These are great turntables in my opinion. Thanks for posting this and taking these tables seriously.

My first turntable was the Technics SL-230. I bought it in 1978 and had it until 2001. It was an amazing turntable. After that I bought the Denon DP-62-L. Which is an extremely remarkable turntable.

I've had a 1200G for several years and agree it's an amazing turntable. Last year I tried different arms with it and settled with a Funk FX3, it was transformative. Good as the stock arm is, I believe it's the weak link. I now use my turntable with a van den Hul Crimson and it's the best vinyl replay I've had here. Not the most expensive, though....

The GR was my goto table for some time, thought it would be hard to improve and I only saw the G in pictures and videos. Once I got my hands on the G it was in love a first sight, there are so many nice things about the way it operates and feels that is hard to capture in a video. If you have a chance to see one in person be sure to do so.

I think it’s worth the price. I’m still rocking a 1978 Techniques SL 3300 fully automatic. And that was just a basically an entry-level back in 1978. The one in this video will absolutely last well over 50 years, and if you look at how it was manufactured, the materials are top notch.

You wouldn't believe it, but I had a 80s 1200 system I built up with semi good products from charity and second-hand shops around 1995. I moved to York from Leeds UK and had a nervous breakdown and returned to my parent house . When moving out, I gave away my system to a neighbour as I clearly wasn't thinking straight due to illness . The app I had is worth some 2k now ,speakers 800 plus ,cd 300, and said record deck, which was in perfect condition as I really took care of my system . Now fully well and helping others in charity work now and still think about that system. The thing is, the family I gave it to didn't have records or really showed appreciation plus didn't understand the quality of system I gave . Most all was top tier 15 years earlier.

@RUfromthe40s Oh , I meant deck Techniques Sl1200 mk2 record deck. Loved that thing. Had a whardale 30d for the middle/high plus two old sonys three-way large box on stands, plus I built amp at collage for a 15" bass sub in a guitar speaker in the box . I build across overs in a neat box with some old volume buttons to Variable the middle / Treble. I also used many older amps as we had a charity shop that sold lots of them ,back them they were £20 - 40, so I tried a good few .. I bought a nad 3020 later of just the just two of the setup I build. . I tuned, said set up over the years, and built a power house and good quality. Lately, I bought a pre Myryad pre T40 / T60 Amplifiers power , some tannoy Bronze B2 and a sony cinema amp and the full tannoy 5.1 set up also some whardale 30d as they is something special about them .

Hi Fernando. I have a 1210G that massively distorts the sound and booms the bass if I play records with the dust cover up (yes, up). It didn't do this until I had it professionally upgraded. Upgrades are Precision Sound Lab XLR outputs (soldered in), Precision Sound Lab EPS-01 Mark II linear power supply, and the KAB fluid dampener. Components installed prior to the upgrades are the Ortofon Cadenza Black cartridge with Ortofon LH-6000 head shell, and The Perfect Interface Carbon Edition platter mat. Cables are Mogami Gold XLRs, and I use a 768-gram puck by Fluance. After moving to a different state, I took the 1210G, all its parts, and the amp (Technics SU-R1000) to a different pro repair shop for troubleshooting...and they could not replicate the problem after they'd had the system for weeks. Any ideas what the issue might be? The second pro shop specialist calibrated the 'table, and verified that all of the upgrades were installed properly. Thanks!
@SkyFiAudio
@SkyFiAudio 5 ай бұрын
You should always take off the dust cover when using. When it's up it acts like a sail or microphone picking up all the sound waves that travel through the air. On the modified SL1200's we've sold over the years I would always toss out the hinges to make sure nobody used it with the cover installed.

Have you ever thought of taking the dusk cover off while playing records. They aren't designed for the weight of the lid to be up and weight transfer all to be at the rear. Plus, the vibration from the lid and making the front lighter doesn't help.

I like the Starling from Sumiko mostly because it uses a boron cantilever and a micro ridge stylus. Most good manufacturers including Ortofon and Hana make some sort of equivalent so those would also be good. It's also in the right price/performance category for the G.

The strobe light on the left, is that actually strobing, or is it solid? I thought in the old days, that was just a regular light, and the markings on the platter were for 33 and 45 rpm, at 50 and 60 hz. But the light here looking strobing, with the markings for slower or faster speeds.
@SkyFiAudio

Yes the led is strobing and reflecting off the dots on the platter. It's actually a lot smarter than the old days which relied on the frequency of 60hz from the power company. No matter what speed, the same dots are used to show locked position with the other rows showing +- deviation. Very smart.

Wonderful presentation. If I was in the US I would buy from YOU! Pretty hard to upgrade this turntable, but I will give it a go. 1. The headshell; an ebony headshell is a tiny upgrade. Don't do this straight away, but after, say, a year of use an upgrade to a hardwood headshell will notice a slightly more organic sound. Oboes, Clarinets, black piano keys on pianos are made from the stuff. 2. A record stabiliser is generally a good idea. It is another mild upgrade. The Michel helps with slightly warped records (never play a seriously warped record). Another option is an ebony stabiliser. 3. Feet. The feet on an SL1200 are appalling and simply must be changed. This unit has decent feet. One of the fundamentals of vinyl play is the avoidance of external vibration. A couple of good options are the Isonoe Feet - essentially mini trampolines. I have also used some maglev feet (from Ali Express). I shake my head how such engineering can be so cheap. Go China! Oops did I really just say that? Next: not really upgrades but some options. 4. Mass. Best practice is to mount the the unit on a heavy bass. I place my turntables on a 3 cm slab of granite (ebony, mpingo etc would be better). 5. Damping. This can be done with Dynamat. This miraculous substance is used in trucks to make the life of long haul drivers bearable. It is NOT pretty. But if placed out of sight it again mitigates the dark and evil forces of vibration and resonance. 6. Cartridge: With this level of turntable you simply should not get a cheap cartridge. This is where the rubber meets the road. For starters this level of TT demands a Moving Coil cartridge. I have not heard Sumiko but Audio Technica offer fabulous value. (As an aside for neophytes who want to do set-up themselves - get an elliptical cartridge as it will be more forgiving of imperfect set-up). 7. Setup. Words cannot describe how important this this. There are too many variables to mention. If you know how to do it - welcome to the club. If you do not know how to do it - get SkyFi to do it. If you are in doubt as to your abilities still go for a professional ... I did it myself and suffered :-> But coming out the other end I have learned from my mistakes and now counsel others. Who am I? A Hi-Fi nerd - I have a Technics SL1210 Mk5g in my lawyers office, would you believe!

I doubt it. The stock arm is a lovely thing, carefully assembled by hand. It doesn't have some flimsy headshell full of holes, 50 year old horizontal bearings and sloppy nylon knife edges for the vertical bearing. I would argue that an SL-1500C is more than an entry level turntable. In the line you showed here, it certainly is, but that is relative, and is more than such in the world of turntables overall. I certainly agree the G is wonderful. I agree with all you mentioned about upgrades. Trying different mats is worthwhile. The change in sound from a mat can be quite noticeable. If one were to record transfers of the same record with different mats and everything else the same, the changes in sound are verifiable that way.

I also own an SL-1200G for about 6 years now. Technics' biggest mistake was to call it a 1200 and make it look like a 1200. It's in no way anything like the original 1200s, it's way heavier, more solid, more accurate and a true hifi turntable. The original 1200s are no match for this one, but still people tend to compare it with the legacy 1200s... which is why this 1200G is HEAVILY underestimated... Oh and btw, you can get plenty of armboards for this turntable, so you can upgrade the tonearm. The stock tonearm is already way better than that of the other 1200s, but I've put an SME V on mine and that's even better. It's spinning so accurately, noise free, it's so solid and well isolated, that it's a great platform for highend tonearms. 11:45 The switch to the right of the "update" USB port is to change the light color. It's a hidden feature not mentioned in the manual. A lot of people don't know about it. 12:18 After 6 years of use of mine, I still have the brass on my platter in perfect condition, except for some slight darkening on the edge where the platter mat doesn't cover it (probably from touching it).

How are the motors different in the SP-10RE-S, SL-1200G-S, and SL-1500C-K? Technics gives vague descriptions of each motor. I know the SP10 has a double coil twin rotor-type coreless direct drive motor, coils on both sides for 12-pole, 18-coil drive but the rest of the line is vague, only describing them as coreless. I have experienced the SP-10RE-S setup and can attest to its speed stability. I watched the strobe on it for at least five minutes, trying not to waiver and it's the first time that I have ever seen a direct drive table not drift. Not a bit! Something none of the older Technics ever do. Every freaking DD-turntable I've ever seen drifts some. Everyone before this one, so how far down the line can you go that has that kind of stability?

I can appreciate the engineering, and while $5k is a lot of money, its very sane compared to some of the nutty turntables out there. One thing I don't understand is if a) this is designed for the audiophile and b) the speed control is so precise, then why does it need the pitch control? Makes it look like a DJ table and ruins the aesthetic in my opinion. I think if Techniques offered this table without the pitch control and with a nice wood plinth similar to the old Denon direct drives... something that really looks like an audiophile piece, they would see sales skyrocket further. Its a mystery to me why they've never done this.

I think something that seemingly always goes unmentioned regarding a benefit of pitch control is that since these tables have 78 rpm capability, pitch control can be invaluable. Way back in the ancient times (LOL!) 78 rpm was at times an estimate at best. There really was no hardline standard. Some “78 rpm” were recorded at 65, some at 88, etc. With the pitch control 2x capability, you can dial in anything 👍
@edd2771

@@saford13 Yes, but 78s pre-date the modern concept of stereo hifi. The buyer of this table is primarily interested in stereo hifi. So my argument, now that you’ve pointed it out, is that both the pitch control and the 78 speed selection are unnecessary for the vast majority of targeted users.

1) I feel like the DJ look holds back a lot of buyers. It just needs the pitch control and strobe and platter dots removed. 2) When you are trying to adjust the azimuth, I think its better to loosen the headshell collar and turn and hold the headshell and then tighten the collar. Ultimately its going to just go back to where it wants to be anyway, so I'd go with a headshell with adjustable azimuth instead. 3) Record weights are bogus. You are putting too much weight on the bearing of the turntable, increasing friction and noise for no reason. Go flatten your records or buy a turntable with a threaded spindle and clamp that screws on if you need that. Don't overload the tiny thrust bearing with a bowling ball.

there´s a much better turntable a following of the 79 SL-1000MKII but with a diferent designation ,maybe similar to SL-1000R or GR with built for it a nagaoka cartridge and stylus due to their work together in the 70´s cartridges and stylus wise, i still use them and sound like today very expensive cartridges and i had better at the time for much less money so this cartridges and stylus kept sealed in their boxes are today incredible sounding while then was average

All true about direct drive. And the motor is spinning as slow as the platter, 33&45, not 3-4000rpm as an belt drive. So no noise

I believe the VTA adjustment must be done with a record on the platter.

Switched-mode power supplies, miniaturized surface-mounted components (SMDs): when they break down, nobody wants to fix them, and they just go to waste ? 🤥 For that reason alone, I'm keeping my 1200 MK-2, because any electrician with a soldering iron can fix it ! 😉

You can’t say that if you haven’t heard a Merrill Signature turntable with a Hanna cartridge mounted on a great tone arm. No comparison.

@@SkyFiAudio, first of all it hasn’t been built yet. The turntable I heard was my boss’s turntable. Will be worth the wait. The turntable he has has a Hanna cartridge which is fantastic. It is like comparing apples to oranges as the Merrill Signature is a belt drive while the Audio Technics is direct drive. You might be able to find someone else who already has one to do the video. That is a better scenario than waiting for mine.
