There will probably be no more heavy rail subway lines beyond Supveuda and the soon to be opened D Line extension. Every thing else will be light rail or BRT, at least until 2060-2070 or so.
@mrxman5813 күн бұрын
@Geotpf It's hard to say for sure. The Vermont corridor could go the subway route depending on funding. There are discussions again to extend the B line to East LA under Whittier Blvd, which is probably the densest corridor in East LA. The B/D line has a real possibility of extending to a proposed station near the 6th Street Viaduct, which opened in 2022. From there it could more easily be extended to East LA. The East LA subway line was one of the original subway lines that was supposed to be built just like the Wilshire Blvd line. However, LA Metro's LRT lines have more in common with subway lines than trams or more traditional LRT lines. I say that because there are about 8 subterranean stations, several elevated stations, substantial viaducts, and large sections that are fully grade separated. In fact, the C line is completely grade separated and runs as fast as our subway lines. It has a top speed of 65 mph. Not your typical LRT line. I mention this because LA Metro is extending this design philosophy to the northern extension of the K line. The extension will be completely underground and connect to the B subway line. And it might extend to the Hollywood Bowl.

The Red Cars and Yellow Cars were both private, for-profit companies right up until 1953. The Red Cars could subsidize their losses with freight operations but eventually, the cars just wore out. Years of poor track maintenance also led to slower speeds and a bumpy ride. Los Angeles voters also turned down one initiative after another, from before 1920 into the 1950s, that could have provided elevated track or other infrastructure improvements. So both systems had to keep running with no public subsidies until they basically wore out. For example, the Red Cars that ended operations in 1961 were built in 1913. LA needed to buy them and instead of turning to buses, do what Philadelphia and San Francisco did- accept the fact that transit does NOT make money, and just rebuild from scratch. Which is what they’re doing now, thank God.

@sdsd41393 күн бұрын
My current commute ranges from 18 minutes (no traffic) to 70 minutes (peak traffic). The D Line Extension will make it an even 36 minutes. I wish these extensions could match or beat freeway speeds during off-peak hours but that seems impossible. I’ll probably drive half the time
@mrxman5813 күн бұрын
The E line is faster during the rush hours than driving the 10. The thing with car traffic is that it will only get worse in the next several yesrs and the LA Metro will get better making the LA Metro increasingly more attractive and less expensive.

@hockeyplayer28 Yes, but for many it's more convenient than driving. And driving, you also need to look and pay for parking, especiallyin DTLA.
@mrxman581Күн бұрын
@sdsd4139 What distance are you covering in 18 minutes and at what time because rush hour is 6 hours a day. Three in the am and three in the pm. Those are the times the majority of people will use the D line. Expecting a subway to match a car with no traffic is preposterous as a reason not to use the subway extension.

I have watched the change in public attitude to transits in Los Angeles over the last 45 years. The growth and usage has been very positive. One thing that needs to happen is to add a ling time frame plan. As traffic gets worse, demand will increase on rail only if it is convenient. Lines need to be connected to more places where people want to go such as entertainments centers, restaurants, bars etc. This is slowly being tackled. What has not been done is to look at journey times. With longer lines and the planned extensions, LA needs to widen some lines to add express tracks as NYC did. Maybe a first step could be the service from Rancho Cucamonga to Downtown. Having a high speed train from Vegas and them trundling along stopping everywhere is not convenient. Same with services to LAX, express tracks from Antelope Valley, Orange County, San Bernardino should be planned now.

What is also needed is a speed rail, probably a monorail connecting LA with Sab Diego and eventually with the Brightrail to Las Vegas from LA. Maybe Brightrail could construct and manage it. It should be fast and cheap since there is enough space in the center of the I5 Freeway. So, for the LA Olympics, the rail system could be functioning.

I agree whole heartedly that LA has made a comeback in mass transportation. But just like your video explained during the 80's. Reaganomics politics and policy's literally cut federal funding to a halt. During Reagan's two presidential terms. Including his vice president Bush Sr. Becoming president an addictional four years. A complete twelve years of LA mass transportation being shut down in innovation. I see the same thing happening with president Trump next four years. Perhaps his vice president if he were to win too. Anything opening after 2028 Olympics is almost a no guarantee. Federal funding comprises about half the cost of these projects. Politicians like to cut the pork.

You know what would dramatically increase metro ridership: 1) dramatic increase in security and police. Metrolink is actually quite pleasant to ride because of better staffing and security. 2) nicer cars - brightline is the gold standard and what all metro systems should be shooting for in terms of quality of product. 3) much better frequency 4) putting the money into metro systems even with no ridership because you need a compelling product before riders will come.

The G (Orange) Line projected to be converted from a Busway to Rail by the 2028 Olympics…does anyone know if this is still set for completion?
@hockeyplayer283 күн бұрын
Dear Los Angeles Country Metro. Can you do some research for us? How much is Metro allocating for fare subsides for the use of Metro trains and busses for the FIFA World Cup and then the 2028 Olympics events? And how much money and allocated time is Metro planning for 2 rounds (FIFA World Cup and then again for the Olympics) to repair and renovate the vandalism and filth on most of it's trains and busses? (like graffiti that is scratched into glass, steel, rails, fixtures, gates of all of Metro's trains, busses and stations? And what are the plan to remove the homeless and crazy people that are on the system? After all, we can't have visitors get on filthy, unsafe Metro infrastructure and be a source of embarrassment for the County of Los Angeles. Metro had better be planning for it's system to be shiny, spotless and without homeless and crazy people in it or else it's reputation will suffer on the world stage. This stuff doesn't happen for free or by wishing it into existence, so Metro, if you're reading this, please let everyone know what your plans are sooner than later!

The LA area possesses a few wide rivers that run basically north east to south east. Freeways could be built over those ricers and Caltrans would not have to pay for land. The construction would be cheap and fast and the freeways would alleviate the heavy daily traffic.

I live in El Segundo. It’s a shame that the K line doesn’t connect directly the city of El Segundo Playa Del Rey to LAX . There is great opportunity for Manhattan Beach, Hermosa and Redondo Beach to attract more tourism and allow resident to fly in and out without the struggle of taking taxi or ride shares. It’s like we are the ones who deal with noise and air pollution but don’t benefit from ease of access as we can’t even ride a bike share directly into LAX to avoid putting cars on the road.

I actually did not know the A line is the longest light rail in the world when I was there last time (and the trip was not for holiday, so I didn't have time to explore a lot of the LA Metro other than the B/E lines). It sure looked long on the map. Now knowing that, I need to ride that whole damn thing next time.

I personally love what Metro has planned for the future of Los Angeles Transit, but there is one thing that they are not planning to do that is a huge mistake on their part. An extension of the C Line from the Eastern terminus, the Norwalk Station to the Metrolink Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs station would be huge for the Orange County communities, since we won't have to go all the way to Downtown L.A. to transfer onto the A Line, and then the C Line to reach LAX. Although there is already a bus that goes from Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs Station (Metrolink) to Norwalk Station (Metro), the bus is infrequent (every 30 minutes) and stops a total of 18 times. An extension would improve that drastically, with the current frequency running at about 7 to 20 minutes per train.
@3Axel19963 күн бұрын
LA lost its street cars when the oil companies and auto industry successfully lobbied for the development of the freeway system. LA shifted to cars and moved away from the light rail systems. Regarding the delay with the D Line west extension. There was a huge explosion caused by built up methane gas just north of the La Brea Tarpits. That caused concerns as to where there may be more of these underground methane gas pockets in and around the La Brea Tarpits which runs along Wilshire Boulevard between Hauser and Fairfax.

It is so shameful for Los Angeles and other big cities in the richest state in the world to not have a full subway system,when Mexico City had it since 1970,but we all know why this is,no trolleys so people were force to buy cars ,but I am glad that now when traffic is always lockdown on the freeways ,there are plans to expand it,a little to late in my opinion !

Investing in public transit is a wonderful step, but authorities should also reform zoning laws to pave the way towards a walkable future. Also, tackling crime is the other necessity. If you keep building unwalkable cities infested with crime, people won't choose public transit, no matter how much you invest in it.

Metrolink is a great concept, but goodness me, it's so heinously overpriced. I went from Chatsworth to the Burbank Airport, a distance of less than 20 miles and it cost something like $30. In the Bay Area, you can take CalTrain from San Antonio to SF, a distance of ~50 miles, and it costs $8. I'm all for more public transit, but please make it actually affordable so people would rather take rail than drive
