I find myself wearing my Amphibia more often than any other watch I own. And yes, I wear it with the original metal bracelet. And no, it does NOT pinch or otherwise be uncomfortable when it's adjusted correctly. And yes, my Vostok watches keep very accurate time. And about the bezel: so who uses it anyways? What does it matter that it's bi-directional or not? The lume: it sucks. No two ways about it. Water resistance: I've worn my Komanderski's in the pool, the shower, the rain, to the beach with no problems at all. They are water resistant. So what's the problem? You can wear them around daily without worry. They are rated at 20 meters, which is about 60 feet. So who is going down that deep in the swimming pool? Or your kitchen sink? They are fine for daily wear without worrying about getting them wet- they can handle it just fine.
@RelativeTime6 жыл бұрын
I think people focus on the bezel and bi-dreictionality of it too much. I've actually found it to be very useful when making this videos. Especially the time lapse parts. I use it more as a timer, and just advance it 20 min or so to remind me to go shut off the camera. As for the water resistance. I go back and forth on it myself. There is the "conventional thinking" that you shouldn't swim with anything less then 100m. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_Resistant_mark ) And that 20m doesn't really mean 20m, because of extra pressure, wear on the seals, etc, etc. But then there is the more real world / practical side which plenty of people do with watches that are rated for much less. For these videos I tend to err on the side of caution. Mostly because I hate the idea of someone ruining their watch because I happened to say it would be ok.
@tjsogmc6 жыл бұрын
@@RelativeTime I fully understand the caution in giving advice in a video like this. Lawyers and such. And I've only recently found your channel and I really like your content, so keep up the good work! I have also looked into the water resistance issue, and while there is a lot of opinion, there is little fact. So how exactly does swimming put more pressure or wear on a seal that is designed to withstand 20m? Can you swim hard enough to mimic 20 meters of pressure? How does a seal that is captured between a backing plate and a clamp ring subject to wear just because it got wet? These are all "concerns" that have been brought up, but never tested apart from those who actually wear the watches and subject them to stress. I fear there is a lot of urban myth surrounding the watches to the point where people just believe things because they've been said over and over again. I wear my Vostoks everywhere. They hold up to rain, mud, swimming pools, camping, washing dishes, or whatever without any issues whatsoever. I've never been diving with one, but who dives with a watch like this nowadays? Every diver I know has a wrist computer, not a watch. I have many other brands of watches as well, and they all have their place- I love my Casio G-shock AND my Seikos and Vostoks. It is permissible to own more than one brand. So my stories are also anecdotal I admit, but through my experience I have to say Vostok watches are in fact waterproof in environments that are considered "normal" for most people. I have my own video concerning this matter in which I publicly state my beliefs, so I'm not just talking out of my butt. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ2zc6GrpslolZo

@@tjsogmc Just watched your video. I love pulling the AK out of fish pond at the end. 👍 But your completely right in the fact that Vostoks in general and komandirksies will do just fine for normal people. As well if something happens, o well. I'd be more frustrated that it would take a month to get a new one then the financial side of it. Unfortunately the internet tends to make urban myths and legends worse. As well as misinterpreting things and blowing them out of proportion. There was a great / semi famous post on Watchuseek where someone used some basic physics to show that moving your arms wont increase the pressure that much. At some point I'd like to examine the issue more closely and try to get a better handle on it myself. Because it is something that comes up time and time again, as well as science is my background. So at some point I'll should try to dust off some textbooks and figure it out. For me it's less about lawyers, but more about realizing my words are starting to have weight. My channel is still very small by comparison, but I'm realizing more and more that people are making decisions based on what I'm telling them. So it's more of a responsibility to try and do right by them. Have you ever bought or taken a look at the newer models of Vostoks? My last video was on the Amfibia (with an f) Scuba. Pretty nice for what you get. Although it does cost about 2.5x more then a regular amphibia. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqjHXqmke9hjhLM

@@RelativeTime Thanks! I've been working on content for my channel, but with work and "real life", I just don't seem to have the time to play around with it as much as I'd like to. I've lots of ideas, but no real equipment or skills to speak of. Yes, pulling the AK from the pond was a bit dramatic, but I like to give a bit of "value added" entertainment on what would otherwise be a dull video of me flapping my gums. I have seen and handled the new style Vostok Europe and they appear to be good watches, but the style just doesn't appeal to me. And they don't have the Soviet heritage like the traditional Vostoks. Then add in the relatively high cost- they aren't that great of a deal when you consider other brands that you can get for that same money that offer a lot more options. But to each his own- it comes down to a matter of subjective style and I can't make a determination on that for another person if they like something that I don't. It's the chocolate vs. vanilla argument. For the physics of swimming force, here is a link to an explaination of the forces: www.real-world-physics-problems.com/physics-of-swimming.html Fill in a few numbers and the force on a swimmer is roughly equivalent to maybe 2 or 3 meters depth, nothing more. That amount of force wouldn't even be noticed by a Komanderski. I would hesitate to make a blanket statement saying that ALL watches rated to a certain depth can survive because of so many variables like age, maintenance, and manufacturing defects, and whether or not the owner screwed down the crown properly. But at the same time, we can't live in a box out of fear- I put my watches to the test and if they pass that's good, so far none have failed but if the do...well, that's how it goes and they can be fixed or replaced. The worst time to find out if you watch is really waterproof is when it gets wet in a situation when you need it the most.

I am guilty of picking up stuff that is mildly interesting to me just because the price is right. It was advertised as a 1970's build, but I have not researched it much to confirm that. It runs and keeps useful time, it has no second hand (it it not a one handed Luch). it is gold colored with a sorta creamy yellow face. Thanks and Welcome. Yah, Vostoks are not for everyone. Part of the appeal is that they are cheap, so you can buy a bunch on just impulse. For some that roughness is part of the appeal as well. Kind of a throwback to soviet era engineering. Rough, unsophisticated, but durable. I recently got one of Vostoks newer Amfibia (with an f) Scubas. It's using their older movements, but in a compressor style case. Finishing is much nicer, normal case back, no wobbly crown, mineral crystal glass. I'm fighting with my myself over getting a Komandirskie, an Amphibia (Soviet, not with an "f"), or a 1-handed Luch wristwatch. Maybe all three, eventually! The Soviet Armed Forces were using 1-handed wristwatches for a while; do you know how that worked out? I wonder if Luch manufactured them. I'd also like to get one of those sweet and expensive German or Swiss things the cosmonauts were using for a while. It's ironic; like our Omega Speedmaster, it wasn't even made for space travel. Nor were the Komandirskie, the Casio (F35?), or any of the other more economical spacefaring timepieces, which did just fine.

@@melvinshelton8448 I highly doubt that 1-handed watches were issued by the military. Probably privately bought, personnel is allowed to wear whatever watches they want. As of my knowledge, 1-handed Luch are relatively new model and 1-handed watches just don't have the accuracy for serious use. Anyways, their are still a cool novelty and, eventually, I'm going to get myself all three models just like you.

I bought my first Konandirskie off a street market stall on the Charles Bridge in Prague in 1992, only a couple of years after the Berlin Wall fell and much of eastern Europe was democratising. There was a watch in between known as the Commander, a kinda posh Amphibia sharing many aspects like the hands and main dial, lacking a bezel they had an outer ring under the crystal with extra notches for precision timekeeping and a date window. The Commander's sword hands were the same as the Komandirskie's with the Commander's dials not imprinted with various military logo's and emblems and some on Watchuseek suggesting it was an upper echelon "dress" Vostok for those not wanting to advertise they are with the military.

Hey RT, those missiles aren't drawn oversized; they really are that huge. SA-4 Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs) were designed to shoot down supersonic fighter jets. The crossed cannons is an insignia worn by artillery soldiers. Great review of the watch. I want one! Gotta love the irony of putting a Russian watch on a NATO watchstrap :p
@RelativeTime6 жыл бұрын
The irony is not lost on me. But it’s the most comfortable way to wear one. Although I did recently see pictures of the amphibias mad for desert storm / shield. With the American flag front and center, but made in ussr on the botttom. Now that’s even more interesting. So I assume the artillery guys would be operating the SAM launchers. In which case the design makes a whole lot more sense now. And is even cooler!😎
@bolandjd6 жыл бұрын
LOL. Yes, I dig those Desert Storm Vostoks too. The US and Russia were on the same team back then. There was a lot of optimism right after the end of the Soviet Union. So the crossed cannons is usually more of a field artillery symbol than air defense artillery symbol. In most armies, the two branches share a common lineage, going back to WWI when the first anti-aircraft guns were just light field pieces pointed at airplanes. But I don't know if that's what's going on here. Or if the watch designers are mixing up the symbology. Although the tracked vehicle with the huge missiles looks very much like an SA-4 system, I suppose its possible that its a surface-to-surface missile, which would make the crossed cannons more appropriate. I'm probably reading too much into it. You're right that its a cool picture to indulge your inner 13 yo.

Excellent video as always! I have both an Amphibia and a Komandirskie and love them so much! I am however confused at people saying, that the water resistance of the Dirskie is limited and not good for swimming. I went swimming with it in rivers and lakes several times and never had an issue with it. I'd say as long as you screw down the crown tight enough you're safe to wear it for regular swimming.
@RelativeTime6 жыл бұрын
Water resistance can be a confusing subject. If you check out the Wikipedia article on it, it has a chart at the bottom on what it recommends. The thing to remember is that when they test it. It's in a pressure chamber that simulates preasure at a depth. But the watch isn't moving, and temperature is static. But as you swim the arm movement puts a increased localized pressure on the joints of the watch. But two things to remember, those rating at recommendations are really on the safe side. As well as each watch may be different. Unless it's a dive watch, they only test a few out of each batch. So some may be built better, and some worse. Ultimately do whatever you fee comfortable with. If it's already survived swimming once. It's probably fine to do it again. Cheers!

Robozgraggi Very cool. I didn't know what it was called. But someone mentioned that it was most likely a SAM missile launcher.
