Vocally, she has the most POWERFUL head voice out of any singer I've ever heard. Acting wise, she is absolutely brilliant. I've never felt so captivated by a 4 minute solo song. Audra Mcdonald, you earned your record breaking 6 Tonys. Amazing work.
@swarzeoz25506 жыл бұрын
Most powerful HEADVOICE you have ever heard? Bigger than the singers at the Met? No. I love Audra McDonald, and I have seen her live a few times. I studied opera but had a career in musical theatre. I don't think you know what a "head voice" is. She does almost EVERYTHING in her head voice. And she mixes gorgeously, and when she dips into her chest voice, she just gives us further proof that she is a marvel. She is also a breathtakingly wonderful actor. I also know, (because I know people in the business who know her well) that she is a wonderful human being. How could she not be? When she performs it is where you want to be. But your comment about head voice is rather off.
@MegaPrincessbear6 жыл бұрын
@@swarzeoz2550 No reason to be a snob. A better approach would be, "here's a link to describe the different ways singers use their voice to make particular timbres. If you're interested in some really powerful voices, I recommend the following classically trained singers: Jessye Norman, Edda Moser, Stephanie Blythe, etc" I think it's a fair argument to say that Audra McDonald, as you said, is a marvel. Don't make someone feel bad just because they may not be using the correct terminology in a you tube comment.

Hard to believe but "Your Daddy's Son" was originally not in Ragtime (at least early on)! Audra had been chosen to play Sarah and she was singing accompaniment on "Wheels of a Dream", but originally she didn't have a solo. That's when Ahrens and Flaherty realized "Oh shit, we need to give Audra a song, because we are doing the world a great disservice by not taking advantage of her voice and giving her something that she can sink her teeth in!" So they basically wrote this song specifically for Audra to show off her amazing pipes and have it double as a means to get the audience on Sarah and Coalhouse's side (firstly so they could empathize with Sarah for doing what she did to her newborn child, and later so the audience would be on Coalhouse's side when he begins his trajectory towards retribution for the racial injustices he suffers (and the misognoir that Sarah falls victim to).

@@samseleznow3430 It's just you. You're incredibly dense to assume the audience isn't aware of the gravity of the situation she's singing about, or that they're "not paying attention to the lyrics". A mid-song standing ovation means that they're so moved by the performance, they feel compelled to leap to their feet and begin applauding the singer/actor for their masterful performance. Like have you just never attended a show where the audience gave someone a standing ovation? Or have never attended a musical performance at all? Because a standing ovation is a really good thing. You have to be really good at what you're doing to move an audience to stand up and applaud you. When a singer receives a standing ovation, they earned it.

In 2005 I had never heard of the musical version of Ragtime, but the small community theatre I worked in was going to perform it (I was the resident scenic artist) and someone brought in a cd soundtrack. I took it down to the costume room and put it in the cd player, curled up in the comfy chair in the corner and listened. I'll never forget hearing this song for the first time-so much emotion in her voice. And then later Coalhouse screaming nooooooooooooo and the line "We are voices and souls". I wept for an hour after listening to the cd. We ran 9 performances with an amazingly talented cast. I went to every performance and cried at every one, but Audra was the first, and she touched my soul...

What had happened was that Sarah met coalhouse after one of his performances, they had a relationship, but then Sarah found out Coalhouse was seeing other woman. She then left him, and later found out that she was pregnant, but he didn’t know she was pregnant. After she buries the child alive, the child is found in the neighbors garden. The police come to take her away, and mother (the rich white woman), claimed responsibility and took her and the child in. After the news headlines in the town, cool house figured it was Sarah and went to go see her. He went every Sunday for months, and brought her flowers and came inside and played ragtime piano for the entire house. At this point he still didn’t know that he had a son. Then this leads to Sarah coming down finally and forgiving coalhouse. This leads to the song wheels of a dream, where they talk about their plans for the future and this is the first time coal house met his son.
