Hi, thanks for watching! The team at Seeker continues to support the protection and preservation of the Amazon rainforest. As such, we wanted to take the time to address the misuse of the 20% statistic and take a deeper dive into Earth's oxygen supply because it’s crucial to get the facts straight when we’re talking about how we can safeguard it. Let us know if you'd like to learn more about one of the most unique and biodiverse ecosystems on the planet!

Hey. Brazilian here. It is important to note that the Amazon is not burning. I mean, there are a lot of fires. But seriously, this has been like that for ages and te only thing that changed is actually public perception. I am pro environment and super concerned with reverting human created climate change. But it is also important to know that fluctuation of amounts of deforestation and fires are, although slightly higher, it is still within expected numbers for this season. The Amazon is burning roughly at the same rate for 20 or 30 years. We should be reducing it, of course, but the reason this is all over the media are not scientific facts, it is just another political conflict.

I feel like it may have been a bad idea to debunk the myth in the title of the video. I am all for addressing the validity of the 20% claim but it should have been touched on at the end of the video. As with most news, there will be far too many people who just glance over the title and maybe watch the first minute of the video and they won't be bothered enough to realize all of the other overwhelming reasons that the rainforest should be protected (and IMO increased). More emphasis should have been put on the reasons to save the rainforest and a lot less should have been put into debunking the myth and essentially giving some people a quick little factoid that proves a whole lot of people wrong on social media for their own gratification.

The oxygen produced is ROUGHLY equal with the amount consumed locally. It's not exact though, and over the scale of the entire earth and hundreds of millions of years, that's still a fair amount of oxygen contribution. A lot of the oxygen comes from big events where lots of plants live, die, but then aren't decomposed. (It's the bacteria that decompose that use up a lot of "the plant's" oxygen.) Particularly in the ocean, if phytoplankton sink to the bottom and fossilize, they were net contributors of oxygen.

@@TheONDoubleB actually there are millions of species of insects and animals in amazon. Which generally isn't the case for every tree u plant. Sorry for bad english
@domc30405 жыл бұрын
@@TheONDoubleB I heard the figure was something like 75% from ocean, 25% from land biomass. But to answer your question, the oxygen produced locally is ROUGHLY equal with the amount consumed. It's not exact though, and over the scale of the earth and millions of years, there is some oxygen contribution.

If you were intelligent you would understand that changing Americas energy demands would cause economic and social problems. So the Document sets out how we will fix those issues while we make the transfer to renewable energy. Also if you want to talk about Nuclear Energy, that is not a Sustainable or Renewable resource. One thing Nuclear Waste isnt a Human life time problem. It takes more than 25,000 years to reach the half life of plutonium. Considering humans have only had around 12,000 years of civilization you can understand why 25,000 years is ridiculous to think we can manage something that long. Also not to mention Plutonium, Uranium, and Thorium are all not limitless you will end right back where we started with fossil fuels. Nuclear isnt a solution its a band aid. What's in the video is correct and a few of us did know this. But, the common people don't. And for now, in such a crucial time, the common people need to associate the Amazon to their own life. By telling the common people that the Amazon is the lungs of our planet is just a clever way of telling people how important the forest is for all of us.

It's also important to note that the Amazon forest provides water for Brazil's southeast region. Comparing to other territories at the same latitude (e.g. Australia, southern Africa, Chile), Brazil's southeast should be a desert. This region is vital for our economy and population as it holds 80 million people (about 40% of Brazil's population). Without the rain forest, they would suffer from droughts. Agriculture, which is the main source of our GDP, is totally dependant on the forest, because most of the farming land is located at the southeast.

However, if we allow these forests to burn unimpeded without replacing them with their kind, we're releasing more CO2, which in turn does affect the ocean's ability to be oxygen rich. We're already seeing this in massive kills of various marine life. It takes awhile for hotter waters to take up that extra CO2, but it becomes more acidic and greater in BOD.
