UPDATE
It’s June 2nd and I finally found the word I was looking for..
Kenopsia;
the eerie, forlorn atmosphere of a place that’s usually bustling with people but is now abandoned and quiet.

Great essay. I love this film. ***SPOILERS*** Listened to an interview with the writer/director Andrew Patterson. He was asked about the running "squirrel with a wire in its mouth" joke early in the film as the reason for the flickering lights. He said it was included b/c in real life, he knew someone who had an electrical problem due to (you guessed it) a squirrel with a wire in its mouth. And that the reason you hear everyone mention it at the start of the film is because stories like that spread quickly in small towns. .... But on my third or fourth viewing, and before I ever heard that interview, what I thought might be going on (and I still think this is a viable interpretation!) is that the aliens (we never see) are controlling more peoples' minds than we know--and that the flickering of the lights is really due to their proximity to the town, and that the story of the squirrel is something several people were "told" unconsciously by aliens as a reason for it. Not airtight, but it's fun to imagine.

I love this movie. Not openly scary but lots of “raising the hair on your neck” moments. As beautiful as the cinematography is, the dialogue is so interesting and well acted that it could almost be a radio broadcast or podcast and still be as good. Glad to see you’ve uploaded your video again!

I love the photography you used. Reminds me of the idea of "liminal" I saw in another video.

Thank you so much! :) Yeah since I originally made this video in March 2021, I’ve ended up going down a liminal rabbit hole and realised what I’m talking about is a huge part of what makes liminal stuff so appealing, we’ll maybe a more relaxing / hopeful version than the horror angle that it’s usually paired with. I love the fictional Pool Rooms. I find that really relaxing. Until it gets spooky •~•

@@UnderTheMoons It took me a while to find the other video - you might find it interesting (if you haven't already seen it). it's on Nostalgia Nerd's channel and is called "Liminal Spaces in Disturbing Old Games"

Oh wow! Yeah jump on that! But seriously this film got no publicity when it came out. Hoped with this video I could help with that. (Originally released this video in March 2021 and they took it down. Someone at Amazon clearly has a motive to make sure no one sees the film 😂)
