The American carrier U.S.S. Franklin - 1945 | Movietone Moment | 19 March 2021

On this day in 1945, a Japanese bomber attacked the U.S.S. Carrier Franklin. Here is a British Movietone report covering the aircraft attack.
The American aircraft carrier sustained a direct hit from Japanese bombers. Petrol tanks exploded, planes below deck caught fire and ammunition exploded. The crew fought to save the ship, quelling the fires and evacuating the wounded. 832 men lost their lives, 270 were wounded but the ship survived to limp back to New York.
Cut story - KS. GV of the aircraft carrier. Various shots of Corsairs & Helldivers taking off from flight deck. CU Captain Gehres, who says "just after seven o'clock in the morning two Jap bombers appeared out of the clouds & bombed us", mix to aircraft carrier receiving direct hits. Several explosions, from various angles. Onboard carrier crew fight the fires, wounded lie about the flight deck, tended by medics, padre on knees leaning over seriously wounded sailor. More shots & explosions & fires burning; carrier had started to list badly. Destroyer Santa Fe playing water onto fires aboard the carrier. GV of listing carrier, bows of destroyer "Hickock" alongside carrier, some of the "Franklin" crew cut off by the fires, jump onto the deck of destroyer, one falls into the sea, various shots of rescues from the sea, sailors on rafts, being pulled out of water. GV of "Franklin" ablaze mix to GV of the carrier with fires quelled, & underway, steaming for New York. Map of Pacific shows route taken, 13,000 miles. The "Franklin" being hit 60 miles off the Jap coast. "Franklin" steaming past the Statue of Liberty, also passing Manhattan skyscrapers in the background. "Franklin" at anchor. CU Stars & Stripes flying aboard ship to finish.

My father watched the Franklin sail in towards the Brooklyn Naval Yard, he recalls the large crowds cheering.

My stepfather, Johnny Marvin Janise (1st Class Damage Control) was on the Franklin when it was hit. He was thrown 80 feet into the water. Of course he survived being my stepfather. I owe more than I can express for God putting him in my early life.

My great papaw who died a couple years ago was on this ship and survived. The ship was bombed while he was on the toilet and had to get out! My moms side of the family is awesome.
