John Morton II had a son, John Morton III and a daughter, raised by their dowager grandmother. 2. A married daughter, Lady Ushant. Husband lives in India. Childless. Lived at Bragton Hall with Mary Marsters. 3. The youngest, Reginald, the favorite. Went to Oxford and spent too much money. Commissioned officer, served in Canada. Married the daughter of an Montreal innkeeper. Had a son, Reginald Morton III (40), who studied in Germany and sued to become the owner of Bragton Hall. - Mr Lawrence Twentyman (30), esq. Hunter, good farmer. Handsome but ambitious after gentry. Not invited in the best houses, not asked to dine by Lord Rufford. - the Hamptons - Ned and Frank Botsey

2. A few characters: - Mr Runciman, innkeeper. - Mr Hoppet, hostler at the inn. - Mr Ribbs, butcher. - Mr Gregory Masters, attorney. His father used to manage the affairs at Bragton Hall. 1st wife, deceased. Ladylike, daughter of a clergyman, mother of Mary Masters. 2nd wife, daughter of an iron monger and therefore shunned by the town's other wives. Mother of Dolly (16) and Kate (15). - Mr Samuel Nickem, Mr Masters' senior clerk. - Mr Mainwaring vicar. Mrs Mainwaring, his wife. Invalid. A son. - Mr Surtees, the curate (lives in lodging inside the town).

The book is read by multiple narrators, they get better after chapter 1. INFO DUMP 1. The story is set in the town of Dillsborough (divided onto Rufford and Ufford counties). It consists of one street (1 mile long), with a market place. After the market place, the High Street (Rufford) becomes Bullock's Hill, then Norrington Road (Ufford, county town name is Norrington). 2,500 people live in the Rufford part of the town, while only 500 people live on the Ufford part of the town. The latter feel superior to the former.

The most notable house (built in 1701) is called Hoppet Hall. It has belonged to the Morton family for 100y. Present owner: Mr Reginald Morton

2 main landlords in Rufford: - Lord Rufford, who lives on the other side of the county. Sport is his main hobby, hunting in particular. He comes regularly to Dillsborough for shooting. - Mr John Morton III, squire and owner of Bragton Park (4 miles from Dillsborough). Works in D.C. as a secretary.
