I do a bunch of things but I have found 4 things that were the most helpful. 1. Move out of the city. Too stressful. 2. Go gluten free. Reduces your inflammation, maybe it's not wheat for you but it is for a lot of people. 3. Eat red meat. You need the iron. 4. Get a light treatment lamp. It's expensive but it heals you. I occasionally hear about the magical black person trope and never really thought about it but I think I can see the thread that got twisted into this mess. Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe initially it was something else, probably depends on your own perspective, but the common story I see from converted racists is, when they actually had to interact with a black person or that person saved them in some way that changed their world view. So on one hand I could see the trope representing that. But this seems to be taking the negative interpretation and somehow making it worse.

As a white person that saw this. I agree with you 100%. The whole premise felt so fucking weird. I was like how is this helping their cause again. Also I would barely call this a satire because they're constantly telling you the purpose of the movie very bluntly. American Fiction does everything this movie was trying to achieve.

Yeah there was nothing satirical about this. It was very straight forward. American Fiction is phenomenal!
@cgpcgp32397 ай бұрын
According to the writer it was not to “help the cause.” The reaction to expectations to film and what the actual film is about his comments below seems justified. “Libii says he wrote the film to give a voice to his unique perspective as a biracial man living in America. While attacking the “magical Negro” trope, he says it was important to give a voice to Black men that don’t fit the stereotypes often seen in film and television. Libii and Smith joked that The American Society of Magical Negroes is an ode to the struggle of the gentle straight Black man that often is overlooked in conversations of racial bias.”

Great analysis. I haven't seen the movie (I think I won't) and I was not aware of this "Magical Negroe" stereotype, being a Mexican that has not leave his country I really didn't connect the dots of these types of characters existing in american pop culture. The green mile one is a great example, but there is also Uncle Remus (which is not exactly magical, but it kinda fits the same role), which is the stereotype that I was aware of. As you said, this movie could have been good, It could actually talk about the subject in a very critical manner and also, if the writers were good, you could even make it funny.

Not saying men don't do that or get assulted, but it's different. I'm not gonna make a movie about it. There's enough media discussing it. I and Spike Lee as well, think this trope has been around since the "talkies" began. It has been a crutch used by film writers and producers to humanize genies and fairy godfathers and godmothers. All this crutch did was lend a maudlin bent to the film. Usually to elevate the sad crushing emotion of the protagonist during a time when all seemed lost and unrecoverable. Better plot and script writing should be the beginning of the end to the Magical Negro/ess (The legend of Bagger Vance and Ghost with Whoopi Goldberg), Mexican (The Milagro Bean Field Wars) and other such tropes. Let us hope so before people begin once again to rub the tops of our heads for good luck.

Dude would wake-up, step out the door of his Girlfriend's apt building, run in to the police officer and ...get shot by the officer...over and over and over...again.

White person here. I thought the ads were intriguing, but I was also expecting a twist. How disappointing. I'll skip this movie. Thanks for your review!

Love this channel bro. My biggest issue (Without having seen it) was when you said each "Magical Negroe" is assigned a white person. LIKE WHAT? If you have seen American Fiction (Cringy but amazing movie) it captures that tone deafness of hollywood. The whole "We support black people but will continue to stereotype them/only use them when they are popular" mentality. Kinda like how everyone movie involving a mexican american back in the day had to show them all as cholos or gardeners.

Much appreciated! I’ve seen American Fiction and absolutely love that movie. It’s so much better at communicating an important message

I had only been privy to the title.(I was immediately intrigued)AND THt was on purpose!. I finally witnessed the trailer and IMMEDIATELY KNEW , this was not "for me". 😂. It's ridiculous. The fact that the ASMGs upmost importance is "making yt ppl lives easier " is a wholeeee issue.. Then they star a biracial as the lead "blk man" then make it about him falling for the "girl next door", " over looked" ("wyt" )girl.ANDD THATS THE FIX!!!. HE SHOULD ENDEAVOR TO REALLY FIX THINGS. 😂.. CALL ME CYNICAL. IDGAF BOUT NON OF IT. ITS JUST EXTRA SADDD HERE

Seems like a thought-out review with a lot of discussion to offer. I don't think I'll be seeing this movie just because it takes itself too seriously and moves into the ignorant racist zone. Subbing to see where you go man. Good video

Thanks for the compliment, Richard! I'd definitely save your money on this one. American Fiction or the more recent Love Lies Bleeding is a much better use of your time.

Your amazing, I watched your review and I think you were on point. I've watched several interviews with Ava Duvernay regarding "Origin" and she really put her blood and sweat into it. I was was hoping it would do better in the American theaters but I still feel it will still stand the rest of time. Your reviews are right on and keep up the good work.

If only the film were at least funny... but for a satire you can't even smile at any scene. You're just constantly amazed that this film actually got financing and that there were a lot of decision-makers who said: "Yes - that's a good idea". ;)

Awesome review Kenny. This should have been a movie with a message but instead it was so bad. So so bad... You hit all the points on why this one sucked so bad. at 4:52 I died laughing. A great edit on highlighting that craziness of this movie. Like you just said that and it happened in the movie. Keep up the work Kenny, you crushing it!

@@KennySparksYT it's a bad movie with a bad message, but at least in your video you discuss that. So if there is one good thing from this movie is that film guys like you get to talk on why media like this is bad on a movie making level and on a race level too. This is a great video it deserves all the love.

When I first saw the trailer for this, like some people, I know, I thought it was about wizards. And then, when I read about it further, then I was like 0MGWTF! I did not see this movie, because I know I would have been embarrassed of being seen coming out of the theater. This was not a helpful film at all. I do not know what made this person make this movie but it was a bad idea.

When I first saw the trailer a little while back I thought, "Wow. How is this not offensive to everyone?" It's so ludicrous that stuff like this even gets made. It's like they're trying to encourage segregation. I remember thinking, "What if a movie was called, "The American Society of Magical Whities"? LOL

They don't need a movie to send that message. They call it patriotism, the legal system, capitalism, and other terms where blacks aren't supposed to participate.
@demonteddybear35107 ай бұрын
The idea has potential if it went over the top and wasn't just pushing the agenda. 'Don't be a menace to South Central while drinking your juice in the hood' from the Wayne Brothers is a good example of this. The movie is filled with stereotypes, but so over done that it crosses that threshold into hilarious. If the focus is they are to prevent White people from feeling uncomfortable then go over the top with White stereotypes in a funny manner. The guy the main protagonist is helping goes into this club he heard about and see's he's the only White Person there. This is something anyone can relate to regardless of racial heritage (same reaction if a Black person went to a club and saw nothing but White folks and the emotional uncertainty if things will go good or go bad ). Main protagonist comes up and helps them mingle with their group. With his magic he brings to the table a fruit bowl. Instead of whipped cream the fruit is lathered in mayonnaise (stereotype that White people love mayonnaise). The guy he's helping gets all chipper because it's just like his mom used to make and lossens up. That's just one example. There are a ton of White stereotypes they could of gone over the top with like having a artificial lawn and vacuuming it then over explaining the process (stereotype White people are obsessed with their lawn, even if it's fake and over explaining). The main protagonist sees it and the guy (different guy then the club. Since would want to focus on the main protagonist journey and not have it get mudded by having him assigned to just one person.) looks crazy as all hell and steps in to find out that the guy is just nervous because a girl he likes (I would make her a Black girl for the secondary joke to land) is coming over. They go inside and the guy has the place decked out with Obama statues, plates, paintings, ext. Play up the fundamental misunderstanding between people who have a perceived culture difference.) He wants to impress her and thinks all the Obama stuff will win her over. The main protagonist finds out she is on her way and they go through a fantic race against the clock to hid the stuff so the guy has a chance to be himself and avoid the uncomfortable situation.
