The MJR review was the second one I watched today. I was surprised to find that MJR also mentioned that he didn't own an Amiga. Then the situation became clear, Amiga was more popular in Europe than in the USA. In the early 1990s, Poland was a really poor country, and yet many of us had Amiga 500 at home. Any rumors that the Amiga was overrated were untrue. It was really great equipment. As MJR said, TheA500 Mini is aimed at people who want to satisfy their nostalgia. Amiga was at least somewhat popular in America. My hometown had a dedicated Amiga store in the early 90s and there were dozens of Amiga BBSs in the Chicago area. Poland had some great Amiga hackers like Mok/Prestige and the Wanted Team guys. And of course, Polish "hackers" started by breaking the first versions of Enigma in the 1930s!
@berzerkinglemur65342 жыл бұрын
@Danny P I'm glad to hear that :-) By the way, then (at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s) we were fully focused on the USA. The idea of freedom, democracy, but also a free market and civil liberties was what most Poles wanted back then. The 1980s were very hard and depressive for us. Of course, as a child, it didn't feel that much, but it wasn't fun. Western music, movies and ... computer games were our window to the world :-) I remember the VHS era as an absolutely magical period. We watched all these American blockbusters with bated breath :-) Anyway, one of my favorite movies from that period was and is "The Goonies". Besides, I could list the American titles of films from that period eeendleeessly ;-) When it comes to computers, I started with the Atari 800 XL. I saw Commodere 64 only in a friend's house. I also played a bit on the Atari St also. Our parents (those who could afford it) bought Western electronic equipment in special stores, where you didn't pay in zlotys, but... dollars (!). These were the so-called Pewexes. So some kids were lucky, some kids weren't lucky at all. And, of course, there were salons with arcade machines (especially in tourist resorts, e.g. in the Polish mountains or at the seaside). Playing the arcade version of Missile Command was an amazing experience. This game has also a political dimension and is a child of its time, but that's another matter :-) Computer exchanges were yet another phenomenon that arose in our country on the wave of political and economic freedom. These were ordinary bazaars, i.e. open-air shacks and tents, where you could buy pirated games. Yes, there was some access to the original games, but due to the loopholes in the intellectual property law, everyone was buying illegal games anyway, unfortunately. Today the legal issue is completely regulated and linking illegal games or software is something in a bad tone.

Hm, many commenters seem to think it unneccessary or overpriced. But I think there is a big value to this machine that is a bit overlooked: It's a great party piece! I do own several classic Amigas and even a Mister - but might still think about picking on of these up. Most of my friends have played computer games in their youth, and on machines like it but they all turned out to have lives and not turn into a massive nerdette like I did. And if I turn up with something that looks familiar, evokes that little rush of nostalgia, just by its looks (that the Pi or Mister don't have), works on any TV, taking like 30 seconds to set up and plug in and is small enough to fit in a handbag completely with power plug, mouse and controllers, I can turn a boring friends meetup with some food into a fantastic retro party with a lot of people shedding a tear, reliving their youth for hours while still losing to their little brother at Mortal Combat 30 years later. This is what the thing is for, it's simple, compact and has the looks. We Retro computer enthusiasts often forget about the social aspects or the need for simplicity to get people hooked that haven't spent the last few decades dealing with this stuff.

Yup the A1000 was far too expensive and Commodore made the mistake so many other companies seem to make back then in not realising people wanted a games machine sequel to the c64. My friend bought Amiga in Poland in ninetees. To buy it his mom sold a nice parcel where they had fruits and vegetables planted. They bought the Video Recorder from Philips, this Amiga and some money still remained for further living. Amiga cost around 500 dollars i think in that time. We earned a month like 100 dollars in those days in Poland so it was a lot of money... I enjoyed Amiga 500 as he was my friend so all i needed was joystick costing me around 10 dollars... Don't even remember. It was great fun with Amiga. One day he brought two video casettes, where there were installed hundreds of games... It was possible to connect the casette player (recorder) to Amiga. We were installing and playing all of them... I stayed overnight and we played even at night. Amazing stuff.

Bravo, a very fair & even minded review of this unit. I myself have the MISTer, so don't feel the need to go and buy this..but it is tempting 😉

I had an Amiga 500+ in the early 90's then upgraded to the Amiga 4000 (Desktop Pro version) a few years later. I will always love the Amiga...it was way ahead of the Competition and PCs back then...I love it. I still have my Amiga 4000 somewhere in storage.

For people who like this, i recommend the Amiga CD32, one of my favorite retro consoles. Underrated in my opinion.

i grew up with the amiga an it was without a doubt some of the best gaming years of my life. ive had this system on pre order since about aug/sep last year. i cant wait to play games like dimos quest an chips challenge, and omg! lets not forget the DIZZY series!. these minis are awesome space savers when all setup together. i HOPE to see some of the others released like a mini spectrum(not the ole 48k one!) an yes a nice mini dos system would be cool also!. thanks for the video and the pre-release anticipation you have sparked off in me 👻

Love this! I had a 1040ST so that would be the most nostalgic for me, but this si close. Also saw the new 400 mini. That was my first computer way back in 1982, as an 8 year old. Definitely getting one of each. ST next please!!!! The attention to detail on the enclosures is amazing.

I have been considering it and it's not because of nostalgia (I was a C64 kid too) but I had always wanted an A500 AND a friend that runs another channel stated that a lot of the games he played on his Pi400 didn't play very well in comparison to the the A500 Mini. (He also has a couple original A500s that have some cool mods). So, buying this would be a plus for me. Battle Chess looks so cool!

Man ... this is my childhood. I had a "ATARI 2600 Junior" a "C64" and a "AMIGA 500" later. I remember my AMIGA the most. I still own the original one btw. and I'm still listenig to the "Lost Patrol" theme from time to time. ;-) One of my favorite games! I own a original copy! Besides the fact, that I rly hope there will be a remastered version of it someday, maybe I can play it now on this mini system in the meantime. And maybe I'm finally able to beat it. ;-)

I need it, brilliant for showing my kids, my childhood of gaming that was not dominate by consoles or a crash that never happened for us here. I actually own a 1200 and 2 cd32's. But I wish I didn't get rid of my original 500 1.2, years ago, it was the best computer I have ever owned.

We had one as kids back in the 90's (I'm from the UK) and it was so ahead of its time. I can emulate the games on PC, but it's a bit more fiddly than emulating other consoles from that time. A lot games had multiple disks, so you have to set that up too. And then there's all the config for getting the right settings for audio and screen flickering to work properly. Honestly, this is a mini console I'd actually play, rather than to just have as a collector for that convenience aspect!

10:40 Classic Giana Sisters! Now you are dipping into my childhood... We had an Amiga when I was like 4 or 5 or so and I cannot remember a whole lot but what I remember I remember very fondly! Try Oswald, New Zealand story or Marble Madness on the Amiga. They are great as well!
