THE AMITYVILLE HORROR 4K UHD REVIEW

88 Films issued this fabulous 4K release on 18th March 2024 and they kindly sent me this review copy. It's a bit of a stunner. It can be purchased directly from 88 Films via their web site and as I recorded this review and typed this up it was on sale at £24.99: 88-films.mysho...
Image aspect ratio is 1.85:1 and there are three sound options with the second of the three being my preferred option which is a matrixed four track Dolby Stereo surround encoded into DTS-HD.
I also talk about the early Super 8 home movie releases of The Amityville Horror and show Mark Williams new book 'Bootlace Cinema' which features both the Ken Films release and the Piccolo Films release. I said to you months and months ago John that I thought this was the perfect 4K transfer and I think now you have a great understanding of why I thought it was the perfect 4K transfer. I think it is absolutely Flawless much like the movie itself. Fairplay to 88 Films for reaching out and sending it your way. I couldn't think of a better person to send it to. Keep up the great work

I'd completely forgotten about it Keith and recently spotted it on the HMV web shop and thought I should really get a copy. Then one turns up! Wonderful. I'll see if I can find anyone with a 35mm print because it would be good to see how a general release print from 1979 looked. Pre-1982 low fade stocks of course but often they're still okay. Your Nightmare on Elm Street video seems to be going great guns. Well done. And the Twister pack looks nice too. I might get the standard release of that this week. I already have a mini-quad poster of that one which was a giveaway in a Leicester Square cinema. That was common practice back then before cinema went to shite! John.

@@millerman9991 It was a bit of a downer Keith but I thought a couple of weeks off and then I'll get back into it. The reason I didn't was simply because 88 Films contacted me and although I declined reviewing their next release (American Pie I think) because it's not my sort of thing, I said that if they wanted me to look at something they'd done I wanted to get The Amityville Horror anyway. To my surprise an order confirmation appeared in my email as they'd put an order through for me. What a lovely surprise. Apparently, the 88 Films web shop is the only place over here to get this pack with the pamphlet and poster which I didn't realize when I recorded the video. John.

I was absolutely blown away by this release! I agree that I was never particularly fond of the first film, but the quality of this transfer was so special that it made me truly appreciate it and I will no doubt be rewatching it again soon. It is my first 88 films disc and I will look forward to buying more. I also hope they will release part 2!! Thanks for continuing to make videos👑

The Amityville Horror isn't a particularly frightening film but it does have a good atmosphere and that showed up particularly this time around owing to the exceptionally good standard 35mm imagery. Once I had the second soundtrack option enabled too that made it a very good example of a 4K disc. The new soundtrack isn't quite right so that one needs to be switched over to the second option via the 'Setup' menu. John.

I was going to order it Gurdip but alas, it's sold out. I might go into an HMV sometime in the next few days but I think Twister is a more likely candidate for the next review video. I'll be able to do good backgrounds on both films, particularly A Nightmare On Elm Street which I saw in a deserted Leicester Square Theatre one Monday early evening show. Now that was creepy. John.

It was issued by Vinegar Syndrome in North America and enough comments have confirmed it is also of the highest quality to indicate that it's the same 4K video master file so likely a joint release between the two companies. I was brought up with this film as my mum loved the whole series. I have the 4k with the different cover and I'm very pleased with it. I must watch the extras. Big Margot Kidder fan and she's the big reason for my love of the film.

Great review John :) I really enjoy this classic haunted house horror film and it's the creepy atmosphere that makes it so good. I highly recommend The Amityville Horror to anyone who enjoys 70s horror films and hasn't seen it yet. The sequel is also great but I prefer the first one.

Yet again we agree - it's the overall atmosphere of this one that makes it worthwhile. The sequel is more frightening but it doesn't have that same feel or appeal generated in the 1979 film. I'd like to see 88 Films do similar work to the second film though with another beauty of a 4K disc. John.

Glad you are still making videos, John. The other day I had one of my friends come over to help install in ceiling speakers to turn the 5.1 setup into 5.1.2 Atmos. Haven’t watched a full movie with Atmos yet but I did pop it my Drive (2011) 4K with Atmos and watched the opening sequence with the helicopter car chase and it really did make a difference when the helicopter was directly above. Having the speakers up high should be de rigeur Sean as it does replicate how the sound is in a cinema. The whole Atmos thing would be a waste of money in our home cinema though and not possible given it's THX as it would mean strapping the same enormous tripoles to the ceiling and I ain't sitting underneath those! Because the rear tripoles fire in all directions anyway it wouldn't make any perceptible difference and would be more likely to spoil the overall effect. But for smaller sound systems it's a brilliant solution to getting truly enveloping surround sound. John.

I was only 13 in 1979 but got really lucky I was at the cinema buying a ticket and they asked how old are you ? I said 13 , the ticket person said you can’t see this .. First attempted to watch (?) this title on VHS - a rental from a local library… well it was full of white dropout lines, picture jumps and wowing sound… had a look at the tape, it was crumpled and didn’t look to have been spooled properly… took it back to the library, got something else in exchange and haven’t revisited the film since… maybe it’s time with the 4K… cheers John, looking forward to the next video review. It's more an atmospheric haunted house than a horror movie Stephen so don't expect anything frightening. It was rather creepy in here so black the room out and turn the Dolby Stereo soundtrack (the second option) up loud and it should be an enjoyable film. Best thing with this release is the image quality which is one of the best standard 35mm film 4K discs I've seen so far. John.

Thanks John! I'll maybe look at getting this next month, if it's still available. I've somehow managed never to see any of the Amityville films. It's that weird thing I find about being a movie fan: I've watched hundreds, probably even thousands of movies in 50 years, yet I somehow find I still have massive, obvious gaps in my film experience!! And the gaps seem to become more vast every year! I've never seen the Omen films either for that matter! Amityville was something other kids at school talked about when I was around 12 and a couple of them read the book, but I didn't get into horror films until I was 14 or 15 when I got hooked on late night ITV showings of Hammer horror films, giving me a lifelong love of vampire movies and books! Arrow got my Hallowe'en money this month with Exorcist II: The Heretic Blu-ray, Exorcist III 4K, the J-Horror Rising Blu-ray set and Trick'r'Treat 4K! Oh, and I've got the original A Nightmare on Elm Street 4K on order from WB!! 😄 Glad you haven't stopped making these videos. When people are imitating or stealing your work, it proves you're making something well enough for them to want to imitate or steal it, so you're winning! 🙂

I have loads of gaps in films I should have seen but never have Dominic. There are so many films and simply not enough time to be able to take them all in... but I'm getting there. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for The Amityville Horror but it's not particularly scary, just has a good atmosphere and a little malevolence to it. A nice pack helps to give a good impression before you watch the film itself. It's not the scariest film by any stretch of the imagination but it has a good atmosphere, helped by the wonderful Lalo Schifrin score, and exceptional 35mm image quality. Nice review John. I've bought a few 88 Films releases in the last year. As well as this film I've also got "Witchfinder General" and "The Blood on Satan's Claw" on 4K UHD. Both look stunning with a good selection of extras. Also picked up "Gold", "Shout at the Devil" and "Hannie Calder" on blu-ray which are are all decent releases.

It seems like 88 Films are doing some exceptional work David. Hannie Caulder looks fabulous on the Super 8 prints that Walton issued in the 1970's so I'm not surprised the Blu-ray is very good. Evidently 88 Films are somehow selecting films which had exceptionally good negatives. John.

Hi John! Great review I think I need to see this again. I know I've seen it before I remember with my mom years ago and It would of been that television version. The house itself is pretty creepy with those windows lit up looking like eyes haha and with this 4k version the writing on the cover 'for god's sake get out" hahaha.. If this 4k is as good as many are saying here it seems like one to add to the collection. Morning Dave. It's a haunted house film with a good atmosphere to it and that's probably largely down to the Lalo Schifrin score. I don't find it scray but it was creepy in here thanks to it being a miniature dark cinema with great quality surround sound (from the second sound option on the disc). The pack I show is actually exclusive to the 88 Films web site but a few comments on here have confirmed that the North American release is exceptional too which probably denotes a shared 4K video master file for joint release across two continents. You won't get the little booklet or the poster though and probably not that lovely slip cover either. John.

I think I had a similar thought process Andy. I don't think I liked seeing her scantily clad at the time but today I can see that she looked beautiful. I think the film plays better today than it ever did. I can tell you that A Nightmare On Elm Street is a scary, creepy film in a dark cinema Gary. Make sure the room is as black as possible and the sound is as loud as you can bear and you should have a good time with it. I tried to purchase a copy yesterday but couldn't get to HMV (pelting with rain) and then their web shop had sold out. It can wait. John.

Hello John. What a Stella job you did with this release. It will be interesting what 88 want to send you next. They did the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair on Blu-ray. I haven't watched it myself yet. So that image in your friend's book of the gaudy man munching his own guts was Anthropophagous The Beast. 88Films did a 4K of that (I did a review) Section one video nasty. @@doublebillmovies We're watching the 4K of Twister this evening. I already had a peak at the disc via our telly and the colour byas it far too green on that sequence you pointed out so it will be interesting to see how it look from the video projector. I had the LaserDisc on to compare it against and got the camera on it. It's nowhere near as green on the LD. I've also shot the Super 8 trailer which looks to be the same colour palette as the LaserDisc. Will the green hue matter?.... I don't think it will once I'm into watching the 4K disc as there are other factors that are more important. I don't suppose it was possible to grade this green look into film prints using colour filters so it's only now been fully possible. John.

@@moviecollector5920 it looked perfect to me. It seems to look silly on OLED's. I need to see it in Dolby Vision at some point on my father in laws OLED. The build up to that shot also helps. I totally loved it as you know.

saw this when I was that bit too young, which effectively meant I got great value for money from it, it petrified me in a way no film can in adulthood. I think the sequel was even better due to being absolutely crazy, I also managed to make part 3 one of the final films I watched on my sony 3D television before I switched to OLED. later entries such as 'amityville dollhouse;' and indeed the remake of this deliver less thrills. the 'man eater' in your book is a retitling of the italian film ' anthropophagous the beast' which was a famous video nasty. it's actually deathly boring bar 1 scene but the sequel ' Absurd' is a laugh riot and also available in UHD. both by Joe D'amato who was a very good italian cinematographer but not a great director.

I've never seen the third film but I did enjoy the second. I seem to have a soft spot for the original though even though I don't find it scary. It has a good atmosphere though and that's enough to make me feel a little unsettled at times while watching it. John.

It's funny how things work out sometimes. 88 Films timing was perfect but I did turn them down because a 4K of American Pie isn't something I'd usually watch so it wouldn't have felt right. I suggested Amityville Horror might be more appropriate but it has been out for more than six months so it was a surprise when I suddenly had an email confirming I'd ordered a copy. It arrived a few days later. The pack I show is exclusive to their own web site so I've stuck the link in the description. Perhaps my little push in this video will make 88 Films look into it Dinvad. I'd like to see that film properly for the first time and as 88 Films created such a good 4K disc of the 1979 film it would be great if they could repeat that with the sequel. John.

Nice! I watched this myself 2 days ago...on VHS! Don't worry, I have a proper Blu-ray of it, too (Scream Factory's trilogy boxset). For my mileage, Amityville II is a clearly better film but the original still has its charms despite not being terribly scary. Vinegar Syndrome has the 4K rights over here in the States - I need to grab it one of these days. BTW: I actually live a little over 2 hours away from where the real-life house is located. Need to take a road trip one of these days.

Perhaps 88 Films will see if they can get the rights to the sequel for us and invest all the time and money in a 4K of that one. I'd like to see it properly as a VHS is only an impression of a film really so I've never really seen it. A 4K as good as this 1979 film could be a revelation. John.

I've had a fascination about this film all my life. As horrible as the real life story is, a lot of people have been drawn to it. I really wanted to do a gable end extension to my property for a while and really wanted to install the quarter moon windows in the upstairs bedroom. The Mrs said she was leaving if I did............. so I've now made the order a priority! 🤣🤣

Strange coincidence, I just watched a movie with James Brolin in the cast. It was the 1977 film called The Car. I have not watched the Amityville Horror for quite a while so this might be a required purchase.

I wouldn't let the bugger beat me Max but I felt like I needed a break because when this sort of thing happens it's like a punch in the stomach. There is no deterrent because all the pirate had to do was remove the video and that was it. If I were in charge anyone doing this, or similar, would be removed from KZbin lock, stock and barrel. Yet with my Fall movie budget spent on pre orders and backlog of great movies I still have to watch (can you imagine I only saw the amazing Where Eagles Dare for the first time recently? It was only the piracy issue I detailed in the One False Move review that made me want to take a break Pieter, nothing else. This pack of The Amityville Horror is exclusive to the 88 Films web shop so I've put the link in the description. If you like the film then that's where to get it from unless you are tempted by a cheaper option somewhere else. I seem to be one of the few who doesn't care for Where Eagles Dare. I 'dare' say it is a big screen film whereas I've only ever seen a couple of television broadcasts and on the small screen I didn't get wrapped up in all the over the top action. It makes a difference. If it does ever get a 4K release then maybe I'll finally see it as most other people do. John.

My favourite is actually If You Can't Stand The Heat but they did plenty of good 'uns before John Coghlan was booted out and then Alan Lancaster. Now then, back to films... take a look at that One False Move review Pieter because it was a film that had completely passed me by. I like it when a great film reveals itself without any expectation of it being so good and that was the case with One False Move. It also helps when the image quality is as good as it is on that disc. The Amityville Horror is even better quality but they're both pretty darned good. John.

3:32 Every horror screaming at the TV . "It's the infamous video nasty Antropophagus!!!" Anyway I wouldn't bother with it. It's absolutely boring and awful with dire acting. I have that Amityville Horror 4K, & it is a fantastic edition. The commentary by Kim Newman & Sean Hogan is fascinating and comes up with an interesting view with regard to the Defo murders, and that the film makers & the author exploited that tragic event. I remember seeing the pre cert Guild VHS when I was a kid. The VHS had the keyboard playing over the copyright warning before going into the Guild ident. I always have a soft spot and love for that intro and sometimes on KZbin just to get that nostalgia hit. 😂 Yes, it is a flawed film, and it's a film that promises so much, yet doesn't quite deliver. It could easily be one of those 70s made for TV horror movies because it's not really cinematic and it's extremely tame compared to other supernatural movies around that time. However, it is enjoyable, & good to show your kids and say, "You know that scene in The Conjuring 2, this is the film about that house."

Yes, I've come to know the poster for that video nasty Anthropophagus or however it's spelled. It wouldn't be something I'd want to watch but for those a few years younger who got a little obsessed with the video nasty era, it's nostalgic and probably a little hard to believe some of these awful films have been released in such high quality. Who ever would have thunk it? Amityville Horror played just like a cinema screening in here. That's what it was I suppose but I'd previously regarded it as a little disappointing. It plays so much better now and the image quality is a large part of the reason for that. That Dolby Stereo track adds quite a bit too. John.

You guys get the best releases england and i have this on 4k released here in the states from vinegar syndrome and that disk looked absolutely wonderful. But it didn't have anywhere near the cool stuff that you got with that release. My hope is vinegar syndrome, or one of those sister companies will release the second film the possession. Which I found a much stronger story than the original, because it deviated from the original book so much. The possession is loosely based on the original events that took place before the lutz family moved in.

It's more an atmospheric ghost story load of nonsense really. I never liked it much but I did have a soft spot for it for some reason. This 4K makes one heck of a difference though because it simply looks so good. The second of the three sound options means it sounds very good too and that helps the overall effect. John.

Evening Andy. It is listed as an original soundtrack on the menu so it's possible it was created for the film but not applied. I doubt it was done for a LaserDisc release but it is possible. Sounds very similar to the mono track but with the obvious separation that envelopes you very well. Better than the 5.1 rehash which I thought was a bit of a bosh-up. Now get back to your orange juice! John.
