In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Poole's Land was declared "permanently closed" as of March 2020. On June 25, 2020, Manisha Krishnan, a journalist from Vice magazine who had written a number of articles about Poole's Land as well as created a short documentary about it, wrote an article stating that Poole had died on June 16, 2020. He was 68 years old. That's pretty sad.

Noooooooooooooooo 😭 OMG this is the saddest KZbin comment I've ever read!!! I was waiting for the end of the video to figure out just how I was going to get myself out to Poole's land ASAP and now I'm so sorry that that's not possible 😭 I really wish I could have had the opportunity to meet Michael Poole in this realm. I've noticed that similar to how at the beginning of the year 2000 we entered a very different (and I think much more destructive) era for humanity and the same seems to be so about this new strange somewhat awful era we seemed to enter in 2020. I guess Michael Poole and his beautiful experiment wasn't meant for this sad new age. How upsetting, and unfortunately not surprising. RIP MICHAEL POOLE AND POOLES LAND 🙏🕊️🥀🍄🏞️🌄🌌💫✨

@@nuance7183 Communism: a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. Meaning the government distributes the income made by the people and depending on how they view your class, will distribute it where and how they see fit, because the government body determines your needs for you. Socialism: a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. Meaning the work and profit of the community would be distributed evenly amongst the community by the people, regardless of individual work put in or individual needs, everyone gets the same as a foundational start. Could work, but there are still people who would take advantage of this by being weak members of society or the opposite and those who would hustle harder would start to overtake the less motivated and either way we would have clashes between the classes.

Unfortunately the homeless population is high here, and the town does NOT support it at all! We were treated extremely badly and were refused basic care and were bullied by the police constantly! The police/town would destroy anything and everything that we owned...we alone, had to start all over with nothing (already homeless with very little) in the 3 years we had tried living in the woods...attempting to build a life for ourselves with everyone and everything against us! I wish we would have known about this place back then... I definitely learned a lot about myself and changed how I saw who I was as a person and the world around me that I live in... There is never all love in life, and he had demons you couldn't see on the surface but of course could pick out with a keen eye and enough time in the community. It certainly was not a cult or anything haha, but often times you find yourself at the impass of obeying someone else's rules that you were hoping to avoid in the first place. In short, it was a beautiful way to live, but there were so many more wonderful experiences that that land had to offer me and I think we as humans aren't meant to stay in one place. My and my girlfriend packed up and backpacked around, I'm so glad I saw everything else I did at that time. @mi jo For sure! When I got to explore about I have to say that despite being the island with the most tourist locations on one side, the other is filled with gorgeous lush rainforests and natural waterfalls and pools. First off, if you wanted to meet up with friendly hippies who know where the best spots are, you gotta go to Paia town. Incredible little surf town where I spent as a home base most of the time. Perfect place to string up a hammock and chill on Baldwin beach. This is the beach where if things are the same you will find drummers circles and firespinning most nights and meet rad people. Also, on the other side of the island is McKenna beach out near Kihei. The main beach is pretty standard but if you follow a rockline along it you come up and over to a clothing option beach and usually huge amazing parties every sunday. My personal favorite place on the island is the north side rainforest by far. There is amazing fruit everywhere, lush bamboo forests super thick and Hana. If I recommend one place above all, go to Hana. That place is magic in my eyes. Last tip, go up to Haleakala crater(volcano) and watch the sun come up. This experience literally changed my life. Ps. Dont be afraid of hitchhikers. Everyone does it there, its definitely how I got around :) Aloha ;)

Poole's land reminds me of Slab CIty. I have spent time in both. It's a place where inner-beauty, self-expression, personal freedom and self-destruction exist in the same breath. Some of Poole's land is amazingly beautiful, and some desperately sad. The tree-houses, the board walks, the Pyramid, the communal spirit, the creation of art, food, and creative human experiences all incredible and positive... here is the not so nice side: Lots of theft, lots of hard drugs, inspite of the "rules", and a lack of proper infrastructure for that many people (in the summer upwards of 500 people live here) on the land. When I lived at Poole's land (known also by locals as Poo Land) it was winter. It rains 12' a year here and mostly in the winter. There were only about 30 people living there during the rainy season (this was 2004) and they were all sick with some form of dysentery, puking and shitting everywhere. It turns out that their drinking water supply was a series of hoses coupled together that ran through a large swamp. The same swamp was also where they had located their outhouses. SO basically an e-coli contaminated swamp was surrounding their leaky fresh water supply. There was no hot-water on the entire site, and no means to properly sanitize and clean. No wonder this dysentery situation existed. I did witness the installation of the first hot water tank on the property, which unfortunately was only a very very small tank (probably about a 4 gallon tank). SO in the thirty or so years that Poole's Land had been in use by the off-grid anarcho-hippie-drugsters when they did finally do something to improve the sanitation situation it was really a half-assed solution. anywho, I love the fact that communities like this exist, i wish that maybe there was more integrity in dealing with real problems. I just hope that they have a composting toilet now, and a hot water tank sufficient for that many people using the facilities. Another place to check out in the same vicinity is Medicine Farm, run by the wizard of Oz himself.

(24:45) I really like the idea of cities having satellite communities in the nearby wilderness. The place where I'm from, San Francisco, has a widely known problem with homelessness. Camping on urban sidewalks is not a good long-term solution for homelessness. San Francisco owns land that is just a few hours away from the city itself, but is beautiful and perfect for camping. This is the 2000 acre Hetch Hetchy valley. Move the homeless out there, provide camp sites, sanitation, job training, food, healthcare (including mental healthcare and addiction treatment). Those who are able to work, can work. Others can just live. (We need to accept the fact that there are people who are simply unable to hold down a job.) Busses can transport people back and forth to see family, doctors, etc. (Two benefits: The homeless would benefit from being in a natural setting, which would likely improve their mental health. The residents of SF would benefit from not having to step over the homeless on their way to work. Tourism and the conference business would increase.) Too expensive? The number of homeless people in 2022 San Francisco was estimated at 7,754 people. The amount the city spent to combat the homeless problem was $1.1 billion. That works out to $128,965.70 per person! San Francisco needs to do something different because what they've been doing hasn't worked. The proof is right there for all to see. * Something needs to be done soon because there is a growing number of San Franciscans who have had it with the homeless and violence is becoming more and more likely.

I know no one takes hippies seriously but it’s situations like this that give me hope and inspiration. Places like that allow fore some deviation and experimentation that I think needs to be looked into more often when considering chains societal standards.

It's like the reverse of the utilitarian idea I heard from Eliezer Yudkowsky, about how it's better to have one person suffer a million bugs in their eye, than a million people suffer a bug in their eye.
