Honestly I doubt this was "cobbled together" in a way you're thinking. I'm 100% certain Metzen had a complete outline for how all of the major plots were going to unfold and influence each other since before World of Warcraft was even released. I think what happens is that some of the writing staff is allowed to write minor plotlines and subplots, and unknowingly fuck up some details in the major plotlines, so those things have to be retconned when Metzen reveals the next phase of the story. It makes way more sense than them just making everything up as they go. It wouldn't fit together this nicely. At all. It also wouldn't explain how Old Gods whisper lines all the way back to Vanilla foreshadowed some of this. "Death is close", "You are already dead", "Your heart (azeroth?) will explode". I mean even if you go all the way back to Warcraft III, Varimathras specifically says about Sylvanas "Don't be too hasty. She has great spirit, but her hatred for Arthas will ultimately serve our cause." He was LITERALLY TALKING ABOUT THIS!!! People just like to dog on Blizzard, but I honestly think they have an amazing story. Their problem is the same problem a lot of writing teams have. Too many cooks.

What's going on now is a typical case of "we ran out of ideas so we went back to origins to find what else we could use". Nathrezim are schemers, but what they meant in the quote you provided was referring to the Lich King, who stood in a way of Burning Legion, and Sylvanas's hatred would serve them as a tool of his destruction.

Not trying to be rude, but I hope this is sarcasm. This is such poor storytelling. A plot hundreds of thousands of years in the making revealed by a letter sent by an agent to his leader that literally details everything that they're doing? There's plenty of reasons why Diablo III's story was beyond awful and this type of storytelling is a big reason why. Rather than deliver and reveal the lore in a real and meaningful way, they turned a character into a Diablo Universe Pokedex and had the villains popup in some sort of transponder and taunt you while they continue to reveal more of their plans. This is no different. Don't get me wrong, the idea behind this plot is actually brilliant, I love that everyone (Azeroth, the Burning Legion, the Void, the Light, etc.) has been a pawn the whole time. The delivery though? Awful.

You're probably right in that this could have been revealed in more than one book and that the assumption that such a skilled agent would present the whole plot like that un-decoded carelessly. Nevertheless, it is still my favorite form of lore reveal. Not a story told in an offline book that my character can't possibly know off but something which is part of the world my character is living in and therefor is able to actually know. Something that makes you exited to hover over book shelves hoping to see one light up.

The Old Gods are just a weapon they sent out, but due to their infection of the Emerald Dream and even the Titanforge, they possibly have been able to infect the Shadowlands as well. This might be why N'Zoth WANTED to be killed, in order to pass to that realm.

Fun fact: -ius is a suffix in Old Latin that is added to the end of a noun to form an adjective indicating "made of" or "belonging to" that noun. The Dreadlords are from Nathreza and call themselves Nathrezim. Sire Denathrius. Sire "Belonging to Nathria" Furthermore, "De" in a name (usually shortened to D') means "the" as in D'Angelo meaning "the Angel". Therefore, Denathrius could have another meaning: Sire "THE Nathrezim" I'd like to make it known that Nathreza and Nathrezim and Nathria could all have been taken from his name, not the other way around. As in, he could have named the Dreadlords after himself. Or, eons and eons ago, someone who knew of his role in their creation could have created the name. Whatever the true nature of those circumstances, his name is absolutely no accident and I hope this comment sheds some light on how that is the case. I find it absolutely amazing that something so simple as a name can, in hindsight, tell us everything we needed to know.

It actually belongs to the eye of the beholder. Those quotes could just have meant whatever was happening back then many expansions prior. People analyzing and found solutions to those quotes and what they mean already in previous expansions. Every expansion you could take those quotes and use them to explain something new in every new expansion. Thats just how it is... Out of 1 metaphor you could deduce infinitely many suggestions...

It is, they’re born from the unstable energy of light and void colliding in the twister nether which created and infused them with a hunger for power. Which caused them to try and consume everything in the universe and start a war with the pantheon of order. Demons by nature aren’t loyal so even the legion had to make enforcers to keep order. Thats the back story behind the fangs of the devourer artifact in legion.

What interests me is that Reality has various races coming from each planes - Dwarves are creations of the TItans, the Aqir being Void creations, Tauren being potentially from the Emerald Dream, etc. But also races that are native to our realm, namely Trolls (and therefore elves) and Dragons. So we've got a little bit of everything, some Order, some Chaos, some Life, some Death and then some of our own stuff, and it's super easy to pass from our realm to all these others. So was the plane of reality an accident, or designed to be a nexus? Especially since we're always there when these big occurrences go down. The Titans weren't able to kill the old gods, but we did. Sargeras was only defeated when we showed up, etc. Does reality have it's own fundamental force, something like Change/Transition? The Dreadlords infiltrated our realm from numerous angles, sneaking into the numerous groups aligned with each cosmic entity. But there's no unified "Reality" for them to infiltrate, so what do they think of mortal races? We're not even mentioned as a fundamental foe of death, are we everyone's ally? We both aid and defeat each of the fundamental forces on our own plane regularly. I'm probably overthinking this but it's fun :D

Everyone claims that there's a Lifelands which is an opposite to the Shadowlands, but no one ever considers that our plane of reality (in-game) already IS the Lifelands, as it is the reality in which life grows throughout the cosmos. And just as life (the player characters) have infiltrated the realm of death, the dead (specifically Undead) have infiltrated the realm of life. Why do people insist that there's a realm of Life separate from our own, despite life already existing in our realm? Our realm IS the equal-yet-opposite mirror to the Shadowlands.

If our reality is both the antithesis of the emerald dream AND of the Shadowlands (as life beings switch between ED and our world and death beings between SL and our world), then our world is the opposite of SL, but still the ED is its antithesis. They've been hinting at this for awhile now. People say this retcons chronicles, but it really doesn't. Even chronicles had Dreadlords randomly chilling with an Old God on the corrupted titan planet Sargeras destroys. There's also the line from Legion "The clever ones kneel to six thrones but serve only one". There's also the fact that Varimithras knew what Sylvanas was planning despite not being aligned with her for like an in-game decade.

It was kind off obvious, people screaming retcon are the dumbasses who pretend they read the books but actually got all their info from the wiki articles. I always thought the dreadlords were a death oriented monster. They ran the scourge, they had the knowledge to do so. They were initially introduced as agents of the legion, but were undead. Vampires are meant to be undead, so this idea they were actually using the legion was probably around from the beginning.

One thing that I’ve been wondering about for the last several years, is while I know they need a narrative for the story, it always comes back to Azeroth, especially given the latest expansion BfA and the end game events from Legion. The powers that be have been trying to manipulate Azeroth. As you said, we the players and the population on Azeroth, are her champions. We are her last line of defense, so what happens when she does finally wake up? Sargaras fears her because he feels she could have been corrupted by the old gods. I feel when we get back to Azeroth, that the cosmic war will have already started to unfold, each of these prolific center pieces of power have been trying to suck her up for their own gain, and now we have the light on the alliance side in a ideal position to strike, thus the future divide coming to the alliance. I think the restraints of “controls” that the titans have put into effect are directly associated with why the cycle of death is broken. Azeroth will finally wake up by the conclusion of this cosmic conflict, that she is a titan of creation and she will bring order and balance to the cosmos. Just my fun thoughts 🤷🏻‍♂️

Don't know if I am gonna state the obvious... But to me it seems that the core point of Shadowlands plot will be revealed to be that the Dread Lords manipulated Sargeras into wanting to kill Azeroth so Azeroth itself with all of its anima would be absorbed by Death, making Death OP and win the cosmic war. And seems that since nobody is paying attention to the Sword anymore, this victory is coming regardless of what we are gonna do in Shadowlands.

I'm kinda having a bit of problem with the Nathrezim's ability to effortlessly walk to any cosmic power, casually sign up, and then change the source code. None of the cosmic powers can see the Nathrezim working with the other cosmic powers, at all? Have no clue who and what they are? Perhaps a bit too much of Mary Sue flavor in them. Though their physical appearance just blends in so well with pretty much every other force in the universe that I guess it's easy to be "unseen" as one ;)

N'zoth saying "One wants to consume all others" would imply the void are aware of Death's plannings, in which case they would not allow it to continue? Or maybe the idea is that the Void are allowing Death to wipe out the other Armies, so that they can come in and pick up the pieces. If so, this actually leads on quite nicely to a potential new storyline, a perfect transition in to a Void-based expansion, which is something we've all been asking for for years!

I'm sure they could do a better job with it but looking at what the game is based off of and what the big inspirations were for the lore to begin with, that all makes perfect sense to build the story and world off that stuff. The game is all about mysteries, manipulation, prophecies whether true or false and the incomprehensible to add that element of Lovecraft among many other things that fall hand in hand together. I'm not saying they're perfect but what they choose to use as foundation and leverage points does indeed fit with the way the lore always has been whether literally or themetically/metaphorically imo.
