The Andersson-Ulvaeus Chronology | Part 5 | 1980-1984

My personal favourite ABBA era.
Both marriages ended in this period (although Björn and Agnetha were already separated). Miraculously the band stayed together long enough to output its most bleak and mature songs.
Restlessness of course won in the end, with the girls focusing on solo careers and the boys wanting to try their hand at musical theatre; they had been in talks with Tim Rice as early as 1981. ABBA went on hiatus.
There's bound to be opinions that I should not have included "Hovas Vittne" or "Fanfare for Icehockey World Championships '81" as they were not released publicly but as a limited private release and for publicity purposes respectively.
"I Am The Seeker" was a backing track deemed too poor for ABBA but was allowed to be used in the muscial "Abbacadabra" by Don Black and Mike Batt. I wish they hadn't; it's ruined my video :P
"Slowly" is the only B&B composition given to an ABBA member post-ABBA. Some ABBA fans prefer Frida's vocal, but some prefer the version by Gemini as it was actually produced by B&B. Frida's came first, so here it is!

These two boyish friends from Sweden had an instinct fot great music and feminine pulchritude. Their music is REAL music, with melodies and harmonies to match those of Lennon and McCartney and come right out of the songbooks by Porter, Berlin and Gershwin. They recognized they had the two finest popular music female singers of the era which, with their incomparable beauty, made them natural lead singers. Benny Andersson' s prodigious piano talent and sonorous song compositions alone are valedictorian. He and Bjorn also understood the importance of lyrics and proper song arrangements. Their music is honest and covers the gamut of emotions from light and amusing to the emotional depths. Maybe it took Sweden to make America understand what true artistry is.

"Under attack" "Our last summer" and "When all is said and done" are 3 of the most underrated ABBA songs. IMO much better than many of the more well known as "Waterloo" , "Money money" etc.

I agree. There are actually quite a few ABBA songs that aren’t as well known as “Dancing Queen”, “Take A Chance On Me”, or “Fernando”, but are just as good or better. “One of Us”, “Slipping Through My Fingers”, and “The Day Before You Came” are good examples.

Technically there's underrated ABBA songs on EVERY album, some are better than what was released simply cos they're beyond perfect almost, it doesn't make ones picked for singles weak at all, it's just unfair on what was left OUT the singles chart. Basically you CAN'T get more underrated an ABBA song as all those beauties that make up "Opus 10" album from 1982. Also don't forget there's so amazing songs on Frida & Agnetha's solo titles of the 80s! Plus a couple on non-album duets: 'THE WAY YOU ARE' from Agnetha with Ola Hakansson & Frida's 'AS LONG AS I HAVE YOU' with Ratata.

There are over 100 songs that are genuinely ABBA songs without counting different interpretations (demos, remixes, alternate versions Etc). These chronologys concentrate on the songs written by Andersson & Ulvaues and incorprate the periods when ABBA manager Stig Anderson contributed lyrical ideas (73-77) and earlier and later collaborations with other writers. around 17 ABBA songs were recorded in languages other than English.
