Suggestion: negotiate with the crows. Crows are incredibly smart and good at remembering faces, it's likely that if you find an alternate way to feed them and put up something to keep them away from areas you don't want them at that they'll leave you alone.

How about setting up bird perches in random areas of the farm and feeding the crows. Crows can be trained to protect the duck and geese from other predators. Some times fighting off the predator like a hawk or a weasel. Sometimes alerting you if the predator is too big like a bear ( maybe even alerting you to uninvited people coming on to your property). They can be trained not to eat the eggs. Crows remember and they "speak" to other crows and will run off other "threats". Need more eyes to watch the farm, you have that in crows. Plus its s using nature which you can't beat

@@Zappyguy111 depends on the type of owl in the area. Also dont underestimate crows: they are known to block the entrance of the owls nesting space with rabble to either starve out the chicks or even the nesting parent owl inside. Best way to deal with this is either to go full ham crow-warfare, which is something i wouldnt expect Morgan to do nor would i promote it, OR try to "make a deal" with them aka start leaving food for them at certain areas. On the other hand, there are probably some sophisticated apparatuses to shoo away crows on a long term (scarecrow wont work-they are way to inquisitive and learn rather quickly, whether something is a real threat or not)

Here in the UK I regularly find chicken eggs buried in soft ground and large plant pots by our urban foxes. They are so well fed around here, that they often bury surplus food for later. I have never found a broken eaten egg. I stopped leaving out dog treats for them, because they were just burying the treats around the garden. Our foxes will also easily jump up and scramble over a 6 foot solid fence.

You might have to put up mobile coops or large mobile enclosures with a mesh on top. Just make sure the mesh isn't large enough to poke a finger through. That'll make it safe for wild-life and your birds. That way, you can collect the eggs, you can move the enclosures to new areas and the birds are still fairly free-range but safe.
@barbarahouk1983
@barbarahouk1983 Жыл бұрын
This is why I suggested netting as tenting material. It could be fine metal mesh screens. It has to be light weight, easy to set up & take down and a large sq footage. He has to have 2 of them. One in use and then set up the second one to move the birds into for their next temporary paddock. Then he takes down the 1st one only to reassemble went ready to move the birds again. Crows prevented from entry. But also keep Crows by some kind of feed for them around the farm as anti predators
@kimberlym5988
@kimberlym5988 Жыл бұрын
@@barbarahouk1983 Just make sure it's good tenting material. From other channels I learned that if it's large enough to poke your finger through, it's death to animals of all sorts including his birds. So he would still has to be careful on the materials he uses. If he goes that route.

Honestly I think the best solution is just making a place that encourages the ducks to lay closer to the main farm area. I think the big issue is that cos the ducks are free range you won't be able to find the eggs in time before the crows do, it'll make things easier as the farmer to collect them too.

Morgan, The farmers of yesteryear, in order to keep crows from certain areas, such as corn fields, would shoot a crow and tie it to the top of a high pole in that area. Somehow the crows understood not to visit the area. I've always heard that worked like a charm. Obviously it worked well or they wouldn't all do it. Although I don't think that's the kind of solution you had in mind, you might want to try it, especially if you want to sell or hatch duck eggs in the future. It might make a good video, also. Good luck!

I keep a flock of 20 ducks, and my local crows love to eat the eggs. What I do to keep crow egg theft at a minimum. I put my ducks in housing overnight, so most of the ducks lay in the coop. Repairing your chicken tractors maybe? All the early eggs will be safe and easy to collect when you let the ducks out. When I first let the ducks out, I have a modest sized pen that I keep the ducks in until about 10am, where they get their morning feed, but only have a limited range so its easy to find any eggs layed before 10am. After that they free range all day, and are put back in their coop at dusk until morning. Eggs later after 10am I just let the crows have. I find crows are useful wildlife, but they need a bit of management. Reducing opportunities for crows to access the eggs early, reduces egg loss. Protect young poultry from crows, because they will steal ducklings, chicks, and young goslings. Even with those manageable draw backs, crows will keep your poultry safe from above. Crows mob hawks and eagles, driving them away from your poultry.

Good Length. Good Mix. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Can’t wait for an update on the crows: they are probably worth a whole series of videos? Maybe interview an expert? Do some research / traveling to see what others are doing? Try stuff out yourself. - It probably won’t be cheap or easy, but you might get half a dozen extra videos in a playlist by the time you figured something out. I would guess, that the solution either has to be super smart (outfoxing or rather winning over the crows), or super dumb (- so that even the ducks get it). Any middle of the road approach probably won’t work. Can you train the ducks to lay in safe places? Or is that harder than training the crows to stay away? - How much money and time is it worth investing? What are your losses? How long until a solution will pay off? Being friends (or dedicated enemy) with the crows probably costs more than the eggs are worth for quite a while… - what an interesting problem.

We have crows! SO MANY CROWS. What crows don't like is seeing other dead crows. We bought three life sized crow "decoys" off Amazon, put them in several places around the farm. What happened next was pretty interesting...one crow spied the "dead" crow on the ground, hovered over it as if it were examining it and left. Soon a murder of crows appeared did the same thing. They then took off. They didn't come back for quite a while. When they did reappear, we just set out the "dead" crows again. We named our "dead" crows, Russell Crow. "Honey, we need to get Russell Crow out of the closet! Crows are back!" This really works to keep crows away.

You can get any bird to stop eating eggs by filling some with cayenne pepper. Make a small hole in an egg ( I use older eggs that I can not sell or hatch out) and scrambled the insides. At the other side I make another small hole and blow out the contents of the egg. Then I use Elmer's glue because it is kids safe so it should be non-toxic to birds. I let that dry. I make a big batch of these for laying and hatching season every year. After that drys, I take a small funnel and full the egg shells with cayenne pepper and hot sauce. Then I glue the small pieces that I took off earlier back to seal the hole. I watch where my birds lay the eggs. I get out early to collect the good eggs and replace with my special eggs. I do try to get them to weight around a normal egg. It's worked on all types of wildlife that are egg thieves, and it has not harmed them.They learn that my birds lay crappy eggs and they stay away from them. It takes about 30 days, just because some animals are really stupid. But it does work.

Back when we had a different chicken flap, magpies would hop right into our coop to steal eggs.

I have a dozen magpies that learned that the tiny chicken door into my barn opens in the morning and if they enter they find chicken scratch and eggs that they can eat. It's a huge problem because what stops a nagpie stops a chicken, and I don't want to lock in my chickens while I'm at work but if I lock them out they will lay their eggs out and the nagpies will eat them. They've been nagging me all summer... I tried scaring them away, and I tried exterminating a couple to teach the rest but they still return undeterred when they can't see me, only they now fly off at first sight of me.

Crows also take our ducks’ eggs! They will wait around until I let the ducks out in the morning and then take the freshly laid eggs. I just let them take the eggs since they chase off hawks. I’ve seen eggshells in the most random places - like on our roof 😂

Your 'brainstorming' amazes me. Talking out loud into a camera must be great since when I talk out loud about what I'm thinking, my son thinks I'm going senile.

i call the crows 'the lost boys.' i had a dove who laid one egg on my balcony garden. the egg hatched and an adorable baby dove was born. the baby was about 1 week old when i was outside standing near the nest talking to the mommy dove. i sat down and the baby took it's first stumble near the edge of the flower pot it was living in. before i or mommy dove could do anything a crow literally swooped down, grabbed baby dove, took it into a garage, killed it, took it and flew to the top of a telephone pole and proceeded to devour the baby dove. mommy dove sat on the railing and i stood there next to her. i cried and she kept watching and cooing. after about 15-20 mins of us mourning she flew off and i never saw her again. that was in calif. i now live in vancouver, wa near the foothills and i'm surrounded by trees trees and more trees. and we have LOTS of crows or ravens or blackbirds. like i said i call them 'the lost boys'. woe to kittens roaming as i've seen them swoop and snatch one up. they eat seed, grubs and other birds and critters. i named the lost boy who ate our baby dove....keifer.

Crows and ravens are really smart so you're going to have to figure out how to outsmart them which will definitely be tough He didn't say anything about snakes but snakes were ruled out because he wouldn't have found any shells. Snakes swallow eggs whole.

Yeah, Abby is free to roam without the cone of shame lol. Have to admit I thought it was skunks eating the duck eggs, never saw one crow in any of your previous vlogs, but it makes perfect sense. Maybe you need to bring them back where Toby is, it might stop them more than out yonder,lol. Can't wait to hear what you come up with. Thanks Morgan for taking us along and inviting us to sleuth with you, see you soon!

Good girl Rosie! she's such a good bird mum. Sneaky Molly, swiping a taste of the doggy food with her murder mittens! Perhaps you could offer the crows a peace offering? They're smart buggers, it may be easier to make friends than enemies
