Just a little clear-up, calling Finland socialist is a bit of an overstatement. Politically we're a parliamentary republic with a "ceremonial" president. The Nordic model, which is commonly called socialist for some reason, combines, on a national level, free market capitalism with ideas of welfare state and collective bargaining. Just because our QOL is high and public healthcare exists doesn't mean we're a Marxist society or something.
@kmeanxneth7 жыл бұрын
The Nordic model (also called Nordic capitalism or Nordic social democracy). Although there are significant differences among the Nordic countries, they all share some common traits.
@cadaver66657 жыл бұрын
TKWeckroth True. There's a stark difference between a socialist state and a social democracy. Finland and other Nordics are completely capitalist as systems (perhaps increasingly so) but provide a pretty good welfare, free education, and have large public sectors, funded by high taxes. It seems to work pretty well.

@@EneSacarification so someone being Finnish and knowing Finnish language telling you a Finnish word does not mean the thing a foreigner told you it means, is not enough proof to you?
@houndofculann17935 жыл бұрын
@@EneSacarification to your first question, his name is in Finnish and could be a surname, and everything he says is linguistically correct. To your second, the video phrases it as if it meant that in the modern language, which it certainly does not. In addition, you think we haven't wondered where our country's got it's name from? There are loads of studies and debate and the fact is that there's no definite proof about any particular explanation, only educated guesswork. We go through a couple of different possibilities in school as well. Still, none of the theories I've read have ever linked the name to lakes, only swamps or just "land" in general.

Suomi comes from "Suo" and "Maa"; "Swamp" and "Land" which then gradually turned into Suomi. So I guess it's kind of right.

@@antonwallin7122 it doesn't necessarily. There is no definitive evidence of that and historians do not have an agreement as of yet. That explanation is very popular because it sounds logical in modern language but to my understanding it's just as (un)likely as the other explanations

The vikings called the south of Finland "Balstrandr" or "bonfire coast" referring to the signal fires that the finns lit if the passing ships were there to raid instead of trading. This meant that every incoming ship was met with arrows and nightly ambushes. Even the king Olav got his ass royally kicked there according to the viking sagas, so the "resistace was light at best" statement is a lazy guess from somebody that didn't bother to look too much into it. There are numerous hill forts along the coast and archeological evidence to support a network of defences along the coast pre. 1000 AD.
@scottkain89772 жыл бұрын
Been trying to explain this to people for a long time. Finnish defense forces have always been a major threat for any group traversing their land uninvited. And yes I have seen the hill forts, great point. Finland has always been a MFer to deal with during conflicts. What they did to the Russians during WW2 was nothing short of impossible. But Finnish savagery has always been a real difficulty for any nuisance threats to their land, all throughout the ages. They are especially good with blending in to the winter environment and cutting the throats of their enemies. Cheers.

Nationalism wasn't high in Finland after the war. People just tried to pay the war reparations, rebuild the country, forget the war and just survive their daily lives. People weren't that optimistic either. Quite the opposite actually. There was still high risk of Soviet occupation after the war and people were pretty doubtful about the future of Finland. Not many really believed they had seen the end of it, especially when there were popping new "People's democracies" all around the eastern Europe, Soviets had a military base at the close vicinity of the capital city Helsinki and great power to influence the domestic policies in Finland. In fact the communists even managed to even get the control over Finnish Security Intelligence Service and there were lots of rumors about possible coups. It wasn't until 50's when people started to become more optimistic - little by little.
@AK-st6yt6 жыл бұрын
Tyynymyy, this is a very true statement. Mentioning nationalism was misplaced here, it is mostly linked to the national awakening in the 19th C, something the video should have included. As for postwar sentiments, some of my relatives left Finland in the fifties, fearing Soviet Union would occupy the country during Yöpakkashallitus.

"Suomi" probably comes from the Baltic word žemē (zeme in Latvian, žemė in Lithuanian), which just meant "earth". Alternative theories are: 1) From an Indo-European word meaning "human". Compare Old Lithuanian "žmuo" and Latin "homo". 2) Same root as in suo, meaning "bog". 3) Same root as in suomu(s), meaning "scale" 4) Same root as in suoda, meaning "to let", "to give" The Baltic theory is probably most likely. Contact between Finnic and Baltic tribes was very heavy. The words for "sister" and "tribe" in the Finnic languages are borrowed from Baltic. (Finnish - Lithuanian: sisar - sesuo(genitive: sesers), heimo - šeima). That š became h because the Finnic languages didn't have that sound.

That's just speculation. The word "suo" most likely didn't exist then in the same sense as it does today.

A great video, but sadly many of the "facts" mentioned are quite questionable... Do not believe everything told in this video, however much of it was true. Suomi was not, quite understandably, pronounced correctly, nor does it mean the "land of the lakes", for instance. And we are not really the land of reindeer either as one could think from the ending as they only live in the Lapland and most of the Finns haven't even seen them. There were multiple other things that were not correct either, but I do appreciate the effort! Thank you for spreading the word about Finland :P

I am somewhat dissapointed at the video. I thought he would have done a bit more research on finnish history or to even pronouncing the few words correctly. Nearly all points he made were at least little off. And I understand that it's not easy to pack so much things to a ten minute video, but more effort wouldn't have harmed and oversimplification was a big problem.

Most migration from Scandinavia actually happened after the so called Viking era. Finland was mostly poor and sparsely populated wilderness back then, so from raiding perspective it was pretty uninteresting. They did couple raids though, but overall their affect to the area that we nowadays call Finland was very negligible, especially when comparing to other areas surrounding North and Baltic Sea.

Vikings and finno ugric tribes had a good relationships and were trading partners till year 1000 or so. Finnish and Karelian areas were the main source to get furs so ofc they didn't want to fight with finns. Furs were valuable merchandise especially on the south. Vikings traded most of the furs to islamic silver. Swedish vikings raided finnish areas few times on late viking era, but finnish tribes defeated them and they had to retreat. Swedish rune stones are main proof for this.

Welfare states are not socialism. Socialism is an economic system based on workers control and self management over the means of production, i.e. Workers co-ops, workplace democracy, trade union control of workplaces, etc. ~sincerely, a Finn that has studied socialist and communist theory for 6 years of my life

Sorry, but if your welfare is socialized, your healthcare socialized, and other items socialized, and you are convinced your country is NOT socialist? Try to get a refund for those 6 years of your life.
@0Quiwi07 жыл бұрын
Socialized =/= socialistic. Socialistic would mean only government can have healthcare. Socialized means private companies can do it, but government has to provide it too. We do have a lot of private healthcare businesses, but they have to compete with basicly free government system. They still make money by having reasonable prices and better service. For example if I want my teeth checked/fixed I can get to a waiting list for "free" (it costs around 40€ unless you are poor enough to get it free) dentist and wait for months (emergencies like chipped or just quick pain patching of course get in right away) for basicly just health focused job. If I pay about 120€ I can go to a private dentist today or tomorrow and get the same thing done. P.s. Our schooling is socialized too, so no need for that refund :) Have fun with your student loans.

@g0d3mp3r0r6 жыл бұрын
I have heard of the Kalmar Union. I know that it was named after the Swedish town of Kalmar. This union was between the areas of Finland (like Abo, Reval and Narva) as well as the south of Norway (Akershus, Agder and Tingvalla) this union was both of trade and military. This union occurred after a Danish proposition because they feared that the Holy Roman Empire wanted to take Hamburg (a significant Danish settlement at the time). Norway feared the Danes would attack if they disagreed and had a lot of soldiers occupied in the British Isles and other colonial efforts. The Swedes wanted support because they feared the Teutonic Order and Novgorod would attack Visby in Gotland. The whole alliance was really built because of fear of outside attack.

Then there's the theory that Suomi has simply come from the word "suo" which can also be translated into swamp. But hey, who the hell knows?

The Hanseatic League is actually pretty famous here in Germany because there are still the so-called "Hansestädte" (e.g.: Hamburg, Bremen, Lübeck, etc.). Will there be an Animated History of England or Wales?

I am pretty sure tho that only parts of Germany, Poland, Netherlands and Baltic were in the Hanzestad. As in only certain city's and the surrounding countryside. For example not the entire Netherlands were part of it.
