I absolutely LOVED the animation on Gohma's head, It's like if the animator remembered that one scene from the Buu saga where Vegeta yells a Goku and wanted to top it. It's so refreshing to see Dragon Ball have a more comedic animation style for the more comedic scenes. Thank you Ajay for writing up the animator credits. Highlights in the bar scenes were also a touch I loved, very atmospheric. A lot of anime just throw over a colour gradient but they went all in with Two opposite highlight colours , chef's kiss.

Instead of steadily building up to an amazing episode and then taking a rest, they paced themselves for the first few episodes and then took a step back on episode 7 but only to firmly plant their foot to deliver a wallop with episode 8 and this episode was part of the follow through.

Osamu Sakata, kinda like Kozue a bit ago for me, is another animator I feel like I’ve overlooked but definitely one I’m happy appeared on this show. His Degesu character acting almost reminds me of MYOUN’s work and Hiroo Nagano’s work on Frieren with that one scene of Stark and Fern. And the exaggerated Goma stuff is so fun. Also the rimlighting in the club scene was fantastic and kinda made me think of Bleach TYBW. And Shun Sawai showing up more is great because it further enforces Daima being a show by Dragon Ball fans and for Dragon Ball fans (except if you just want 2uper lmao)

Ya know whats funny is the first fight didn’t need to be on screen at all. It was really weird from a story telling perspective to be in the middle of a confrontation to just say “they must be those guys you beat up last night” and then flash back to the actual entire fight. They literally just wanted to show us vegeta fighting more
@gokunenn4243Күн бұрын
I mean literally most of the second half was completely pointless and filler-esque. We didn't need to see him and Piccolo beating down the random thiefs either, because there was no narrative reason for them to steal their ship if it was going to be returned literally the very same episode. It felt like executive mandated fighting for the sake of fighting.
@negano56542 күн бұрын
Thanks for another animation breakdown, Ajay!!! i gotta say the Shun Sawai artwork looks almost like Toriyama's design in paper and in animation. Its really well detailed and i wanna followng because i appreciate that more of these animators who make Dragon Ball characters feel like how we read them or watched back in the day. I agree on the storyboard opinions. The Degesu animation was also very good. Such fluidity from Osamu, Degesu looked a real person with how his cape moved and the mouth movement. I hope he has more work in Daima because it looked so natural than other animation styles in this episode and Daima.

I don't think anybody has an issue with Yammamuro if he just does what he did here. Do corrections where necessary for consistency and let the animators have fun. He is still one of DBs most veteran animators, so it can't hurt having his experience and direction on board. But god am I glad that stiff plastic characters with highlights everywhere are a thing of the past. But I said it before, it's really great to see legends like Nakatsuru and Yammamuro coming together with some fresh and very skilled you blood to bring us Daima. It keeps being a blast.

Funny how you have almost nothing but praise for this ep, but when you say that the model consistency takes a nose down, that really stood out to me while watching, specially considering how on model and polished everything looks in Daima, so to me this is the worst looking episode, still great, but the worst. Daima set the bar so high I don't even know how we could watch DBS melting back in the day.
@AnimeAjay3 күн бұрын
I guess it depends where your priorities are, really. For me, episode 7 remains the worst due to its bad board and kinda nothing visuals. Whereas this had a super polished first half, and while the second half's art was all over the place, the excellent animation ensured it didn't really distract me all that much.

@only_goatkuuu3 күн бұрын
its great to have a dragon ball anime where even the lowest priority episodes, and which in fact show very little have this consistency, the storyboard of the first part was very creative, kiriyama understood the room of that hotel very well, and the corrections of the various nakatsuru takahashi and sawai are very beautiful to see. On the animation side nothing special, except for the wonderful character acting in the scene of degesu and gomah and takeshi morita in the cut of vegeta. in general I'm having a lot of fun with daima, it's really a breath of fresh air for dragon ball...... BUT my only problem with the series is the slowness, let me explain better. If the episode count is really 20 then this part of the series could have been structured and condensed much better, but I have a hard time believing that there are only 20 episodes. well, only time will tell. lol great vid as always ajay

It feels very character-driven. Vegeta is intensely practical and pragmatic compared to Goku; he has the Saiyan thrill and hunger for fighting, but he also spent most of his lifetime being a professional soldier. He learned fighting explicitly to be able to kill people and protect himself from being killed. Goku fights purely for the joy of it. He's not just fighting, he's PLAYING.

Piccolo is really just Vegeta with a more chilled demeanor. They often feel the same and do the same lol they show up to the event and act standoffish. They're both extremely prideful and like to fight. Piccolo is actually more Saiyan like than Goku if you're using Vegeta as the goal post to Saiyan's
@gokunenn4243Күн бұрын
Where the hell are you getting than Piccolo is prideful post-merge? There is literally zero showing of that at all. He also doesn't have the crazy excitement from battle Goku and the Saiyans get. Hell in Super he didn't want to fight at all in the Lookout because he cares more about its sacred status. He has also never been prideful about being a Namekian- rightfully so since he is as disconnected from then as Goku is to Planet Vegeta. Literally the only time Piccolo had his pride offended was in the Cell saga, and not only was that before merging with God, that was also because he felt like a failure as a demon.
