As opposed to Lenny, Barney, Chief Wiggum, Ned Flanders, Milhouse's Dad, Seymour Skinner, Superintendent Chalmers, Waylon Smithers, Comic Book Guy? So many other characters for middle class white male representation. As opposed to only Apu? I normally don't take up for others but Hari had valid point about Apu as "JJ" from Good Times would be a hard sell today. At the end of the day, H. Azaria made $ already so it doesn't pay to continue the character. Whether he fades like Bleeding Gums Murphy, Troy Maclure or gets butchered like Chef from South Park remains to be seen.

Flanders is a stereotypical Christian. And part of the joke is that not only is Flanders a Christian, he's extremely good at being a Christian. And you can't help but feel annoyed at Flanders even though he literally does nothing wrong. As a Christian what's even funnier to me is that I want to say, "But we're not all like Flanders!" Even though would it be anything bad if we were? That's what makes stereotypes great.

You know, Warner Bros tried to get rid of Speedy Gonzalez like a decade ago, because they realized that the character was probably viewed as offensive. Right?! I say that to people all the time - society is REALLY comfortable right now, which is why shit like this gets any sort of popularity and acknowledgement. But a foolish unfunny comedian wielding a shitty documentary stepped forth to oppose me. Also, he made a point of name-dropping and saying that he "knows" most of the Indian celebrities in Hollywood, yet there were some notable absences in his "documentary". It stands to reason more that they didn't agree with his narrative more than that they were unavailable since the others managed to make time to appear. 🤔

I never really liked his comedy even before the whole Apu thing, cos his sketches just consist of scolding people (especially white americans) about what they can and can't laugh at or joke about, all while belittling them. His "comedy" is mainly just him bitching about white people and making anyone who actually liked Apu (regardless of their skin colour) look like awful people.

Was dragged to one of his shows and left halfway, didn’t even drive my friend back home because of that, next time he showed up to my house I fired my bolt action rifle in the air and that made him run like a bitch. You know what really bothered me the most about this documentary, aside from the obvious? The "4 black guys, nobody will watch it" comment. When we had this great show, growing up, called "That's So Raven". Everyone I knew, who had watched it, liked that show. And quite literally, there is just one white main character there, Chelsea, with 5 main characters that are black, being Raven, her family, and Eddie. It's almost like, if your show is actually good, people will watch it, and has nothing to do with who is in said show??? What a concept.

My dad once had some wise words. He said "We try to give our kids normal names so they don't get bullied, then they go and do things like this..." (This was more funny than it sounds) When you're bullied it may seem like the nexus of bullying, the name they call you or what they torment you for, is the reason for bullying. It's not. The reasons for bullying are complex, but the name someone bullies you with is what they think will spark an emotional reaction. If the character of Apu never existed, they would've bullied you all the same. Maybe it would've sounded more racist, but the cause of being bullied is not the caricature they associate with you, but the bully and their whims.

So his parents who Apu is clearly supposed to be stereotyping and clearly cane here to this great country to make a better life for their family and they worked incredibly hard to do so aren’t offended by it. But the boy who privileges off his parents hard work and is “westernized” by every since of the word is! Yea... it seems like he’s mostly just ashamed of his culture.
