As opposed to Lenny, Barney, Chief Wiggum, Ned Flanders, Milhouse's Dad, Seymour Skinner, Superintendent Chalmers, Waylon Smithers, Comic Book Guy? So many other characters for middle class white male representation. As opposed to only Apu? I normally don't take up for others but Hari had valid point about Apu as "JJ" from Good Times would be a hard sell today. At the end of the day, H. Azaria made $ already so it doesn't pay to continue the character. Whether he fades like Bleeding Gums Murphy, Troy Maclure or gets butchered like Chef from South Park remains to be seen.

Flanders is a stereotypical Christian. And part of the joke is that not only is Flanders a Christian, he's extremely good at being a Christian. And you can't help but feel annoyed at Flanders even though he literally does nothing wrong. As a Christian what's even funnier to me is that I want to say, "But we're not all like Flanders!" Even though would it be anything bad if we were? That's what makes stereotypes great.

This came out the day after Apu officially lost his voice. They’re probably not going to replace him, since the cast is too old to have someone new join. So he’s probably just going to get killed off. Less on-screen diversity in this iconic sitcom. What a win for progressivism, huh?

You know, Warner Bros tried to get rid of Speedy Gonzalez like a decade ago, because they realized that the character was probably viewed as offensive. But then, the Hispanic community actually fought to have him brought back, because they viewed him as a positive role model. He was smart, strong, and basically defied a lot of Hispanic stereotypes. Yes, f*cking Speedy Gonzalez was seen as a good symbol for the people he “represented” despite him originating from a “more racist” decade, than Apu came from.

This is so stupid. I am a Hispanic and I love Nacho Libre. It’s a movie were a white guy plays a Latino and the whole movie is a parody of Latinos and Latin culture. My Mexican father who experienced actual racism loves the movie. 11:00 Also saying that you can’t name a character after something just because that thing was meaningful is stupid. Nobody is making a documentary complaining that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are named after famous artists. Or like naming your dog after someone/something that was meaningful to you. Or like naming the idiot MC of your show “Homer” after one of the most prolific philosophers of all time. They don’t complain about Homers name because he is a parody of white peoples so that makes it ok. Hypocrites

Apu is smart, he's a hard worker, he has a doctorate in computer science, he has interesting hobbies (singing, bowling, cooking, building furniture, etc), he's a volunteer fire fighter... and Hari Kondabolu still boiled down Apu to his voice. I know you had to reupload this (and thank you for doing so) but Hari Kondabolu's boohooing over a cartoon's character voice is still infuriating. It should be entertaining, but the fact that he got what he wanted is bullshit. Who will voice Apu now, Mr. Kondabolu? You? I hope not. As someone else pointed out, Apu will probably get killed off.

Whenever I used to mock Indian people I'd do the Apu voice, then I moved and worked for a lot of different Indians. The rude ones got mocked and the voices slowly away from Apu. In fact, Apu was about the only Indian I actually liked because his role in The Simpsons was almost always positive. He was a hard working, no bullshit intellectual who worked 25hour days AND had time to be a volunteer fireman, husband, and father while also being a fucking ladies man when he was single. But, he was voiced by Matt Groening 's "white friend"... and so, he's a monster. Apu is gone now, the one of very few positive Indian representatives in POPULAR culture. You know what really bothered me the most about this documentary, aside from the obvious? The "4 black guys, nobody will watch it" comment. When we had this great show, growing up, called "That's So Raven". Everyone I knew, who had watched it, liked that show. And quite literally, there is just one white main character there, Chelsea, with 5 main characters that are black, being Raven, her family, and Eddie. It's almost like, if your show is actually good, people will watch it, and has nothing to do with who is in said show??? What a concept.

My dad once had some wise words. He said "We try to give our kids normal names so they don't get bullied, then they go and do things like this..." (This was more funny than it sounds) When you're bullied it may seem like the nexus of bullying, the name they call you or what they torment you for, is the reason for bullying. It's not. The reasons for bullying are complex, but the name someone bullies you with is what they think will spark an emotional reaction. If the character of Apu never existed, they would've bullied you all the same. Maybe it would've sounded more racist, but the cause of being bullied is not the caricature they associate with you, but the bully and their whims.
