It was a particular moment in irish history very hard to explain the historical significance from scratch. Basically its the site of a british army massacre in 1920 and no british team ,british anthem or british sport was allowed to be played there until that that time
@johnroche7541 Жыл бұрын
On the morning of 21st November 1920 at the height of the Irish War of Independence 1919-1921 an IRA unit launched an attack against British Sectet Servicemen,Intelligence Officers and other members of the British military in Dublin city. Several were killed. As a reprisal in the afternoon British units of the Auxiliaries who were drawn from ex officers of the British Army,Royal Navy and RAF and veterans of WW1 opened fire on Irish civilians in Croke Park attending a football match between Dublin and Tipperary. One of the footballers named Hogan was killed and a stand in the stadium is named after him. 14 Irish civilians were killed including children. The Auxiliaries committed what would be considered war crimes in Ireland during the conflict and would fit the criteria to labelled as such today under a UN charter. Just over a year and 7 months earlier in India(April 1919) the British Army opened fire on Indian civilians killing over 300 at Amritsar. Getting back to Ireland only native Irish games were allowed to be played at Croke Park. The events on 21st November 1920 in Ireland is known as "Bloody Sunday". Obviously a lot of emotion was condensed into the stadium and throughout Ireland for that rugby match. The Irish displayed great respect towards the English National Anthem by being totally silent. There was concern that the Irish would be vociferous during the playing of "God Save The Queen" but they kept a dignified silence which I think unsettled the English team. When the Queen visited Ireland she also visited Croke Park. She also visited the "Garden of Rememberance" which is dedicated to Irish people who paid the ultimate sacrafice in the struggle for freedom and independence and vowed Her head in reverence.

Many people didn't want England singing 'God save the Queen' here.

Get out of here dude. One song is about a country where everyone is supposedly duty bound to carry a rifle to kill English people only, while another is about rallying around a symbolic title. But both have a more symbolic meaning that you have to be fired up on 100 year old nationalism to discard.

Of course it's something to do with history. It was the British anthem being played somewhere were they killed like 20 people in 1921 it was also a sign if strength in Anglo-Irish relations. What odds if it's soccer or rugby it's played at just the act itself

This makes me proud to be Irish. I am Irish right? I got red hair. Joking aside. What a day this was. There is a great documentary about this game and it`s importance in the Irish history. What impresses me the most is the respect the Irish sports fans have. I once attended a soccer game in Dublin. A pretty important one. Ireland vs Switzerland. Ireland had to win to qualify for the final qualifier against Turkey, a tie or loss meant Switzerland would go through. I showed up in the Irish fan sector with a Swiss flag. They gave me hard time. "We'll beat you up if your team scores." While smiling and other guys telling me that nothing will happen, they are just making fun of your bravery. It was a lot of fun that night. The guy on the left of me ignored me all game. Hey, I was the "enemy" after all. To this day, I fondly remember his sportsmanship after the game. He got up and upon leaving, shook my hand "Congratulations. Good luck against Turkey." What an absolute class act that guy.

What I've just noticed tonight about the difference in the Irish and English anthems is that England pledges allegiance to an actual person (of an entitled family no less who owns half their country) whereas the Irish anthem is about the nation, the community of people. It was listening to The flower of Scotland that made me realise. They're the same. It's about a nation, a community ❤❤❤

The idea is supposed to be that the monarch embodies that community ( whether it’s actually an affective display of community is debatable)
