A good example of representation would be like, ghost of tsushima; lots of great, strong, female protagonists who are good characters and don't just feel written in. Queer and other marginalised characters should be able to exist, whether good or bad, without their identity being the biggest target for criticism. Besides, companies are always trying to cater to certain audiences. Earlier games had huge s3x appeal catered towards men, because companies believed videogames were only a guy thing. Now times have changed, and we're seeing more accurate representations of women after companies realised women enjoy gaming just as much. As much as we sh!t on companies, they are what bring the most popular media we know now into the mainstream. Being able to see ourselves, in the mainstream, no matter how "cringe" the representation is, is extremely comforting. For Example: Mortal Kombat's Kitana was an extremely p3v3rted and overs3xualised CONCEPT of what the original Netherrealm team thought a woman to be, yet still, plenty of women (like myself), identified with her and latched onto her character. I believe companies are extremely out of touch, but we are directing our anger towards the wrong things... Be mad at the heads of these companies, not the writers. Instead of going "writing bad", perhaps consider why it was that way. More often than not, it's because of time constrictions, toxic work environment, the shutting down of creative ideas, layoffs or company policy. Companies know that people will always blame the writers or devs before they blame the people in charge. They are a scapegoat for the real issue .... (Also just wanna say I'm tired AF after an 8 hour work day, so idk if this makes any sense. But thanks for reading this far if you have.)

Very often the cause of bad "woke" characters in media is because they are written by people who just don't get it. Men are notoriously bad at writing women characters, especially in books. Your average dudebro in some dev team probably has zero clue about what it is to be trans. And so on. If you look at great examples of representation it usually comes from individuals who themselves have it as a lived experience. Not exclusively, and being from a marginalized group doesn't mean you're guaranteed to write a good character from that group but it's rare that a writer has insight into these experiences unless they have personally been through them (or at least something analogous.)

I love how they tried to "It's not actually woke" BG3 despite the fact you can make your character trans and fuck anything that moves in it. Its really funny that they latched onto BMW because that’s probably the most woke game on the lineup. Its about the corruption present in religious and governmental institutions and how yearning to be free or different is punished with dehumanizing treatment and violence. The main character is constantly profiled and degraded, mistaken for a famous person of his same race, and forced to work within a system that actively exploits and harms him throughout the game. The female leads are either stronger than the lead or suffer under the system and fight the protagonist because they can’t fight the oppressive system. The gender ambiguity of shapeshifting, the homoerotic tension between wukong and erlang shen, the classist narrative pushed by the game’s villains, its all so very woke. And lets not mention that the hottest characters in the game are either the elderly woman, they gay man, or the monkeys. Thats very woke and based. Should’ve won GOTY tho.

I sincerely cannot understand people that choose to make themselves miserable and angry fighting against a perceived Boogeythem seeking to tear down everything they enjoy. Why can't they just see something they aren't interested in and leave it at that? Games like Dragon Age: The Veilguard aren't attacking you because of the, from my perspective that lacks context of having played the game myself - slightly cringe, corporate safe, stiff dialogue about LGBT+ topics. It is fair to say you aren't interested in it because the overall designs present are a downgrade from the artstyle in the previous games, or that the gameplay departs from what you enjoyed about the series prior. Concord wasn't a failure because of the characters all being DEI Woke dumpster fires, it was a failure because it came far to late into a well established genre of shooter with a clearly lacking identity, too little interest, and character designs that just failed to intrigue most people. I don't understand the point in living every moment worried about shit like whether or not the new Witcher game will be "woke" with Ciri apparently being ugly now even though she looks almost exactly the same, just with more realistic skin texturing - and clothing that makes her look bulkier than she probably actually is. Why be excited that they're continuing the story? Why not be skeptical because the last game they released, Cyberpunk 2077, launched in a very questionable state that has left the games reputation marred even today when all of that has been fixed by now? People need to get their heads out of the manufactured outrage headspace and relearn how to care about real issues in games.

As long as the writing is good, i don't care who the protagonist is or what they believe in. Games should continue to create influential narratives, whether hand crafted into a mission based saga, explored through an open world, or created through time spent with strangers and friends online. All characters can be compelling with proper writing, but sometimes they just arent. Then there are people who just cant appreciate how these characteristics influence characters and thus the world in which they exist.

ill argue that re4 remake was not a fun game. it was way, WAY too long. the middle was so stretched out that it was a slog to get through.
