How did a typeface spark more than a century of debate by German nationalists that culminated in a decision by the Nazis? Well, like many stories of western history, it all started with the Holy Roman Empire...

Nice general overview. However, Fraktur was not limited to Germany historically. Norway, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, and of course Austria were at one point heavy users of Fraktur. Likewise, Fraktur is not pronounced like 'tractor', but is pronounced 'frock-tour'.

Those places were under heavy German influence. Black leather script was used by all of Europe but around the Renaissance people started finding Carolingian era scripts and mistook them for Roman era Latin scripts and called for a return to the "old"(or in Latin "Antiqua") script. The German states and Northern Europe didn't really care for that for various so it held out there. Then the Scandinavian countries dropped it, then Lithuania and slowly, by the 20th century, only German speaking areas had it so 'Fraktur' became known as the "German" Script(Deutsche schrift) while 'Antiqua' became known as "Latin Script"(Lateinische schrift in German).

I heard the allied occupation also forbid the German letters after the war so that they can easierly read them.

No, it was forbidden before the Allies won by the Nazis in the early '40s.

In the photo of Hitler that is shown @ 1:47, he looks a little like Ryan Reynolds. Something about the mouth.
