Neat machines, and certainly ahead of their time. Few of us had 10 grand lying around to invest in one!

Yes, and neither did most businesses, unfortunately.

The problem of the Lisa can be summed up in three words ... cost, speed and reliability. But brilliant in concept...

I'm surprised they managed to sell even 10k of these machines. The cost of RAM did them in. Not only the cost, the chip count needed to get 1MB. 2 full sized boards loaded with individual chips just makes it even more expensive to manufacture.. Even at the high $10k price mark, the low number of machines sold, only 10k, meant they never recouped their initial 150 Million investment. So then they learned the lesson that if it comes down to RAM or cost, they were going to chose cost. This meant the Mac was BADLY under-powered initially. But at least the Mac had the 8mhz cpu vs the 5mhz Lisa. I think it's a shame the Lisa faded away into the Mac rather than the other way around. I like the form factor of the Lisa a lot better than the compact mac design. Not only is it more aesthetically pleasing, but it is far more practical and has room for cards inside whereas the Mac did not. I'm pretty sure Nubus was only included in the Apple Mac II model in 1987. It also has a bigger and nicer screen.

Have you repaired the drives yet? You mentioned at the end that you intended on getting around to it one day. It would be interesting to hear and see them working. I would assume the CF card is a heck of a lot faster than the original drive.

I attempted many times but in the end gave up on both. The CF card is a great substitute although it is silent so doesn't substitute the sounds of those behemoths powering up.

We want to see new old machines, not this old old stuff.

It's a remastering project at the moment.
