What an amazing job! I make and fit kitchens but most of the time the clients also like me to do other woodwork around the house, mainly hanging doors. The first one I did took me absolutely ages but the more I have done, the quicker and more efficient I have become at it. It hasn't helped that I work on farmhouses 99% of the time so the walls can be 50mm out in places but practice makes perfect. I hope your apprentice understands that and doesn't get discouraged by taking a while at the start.

Maybe it’s a midlands/northern thing but I don’t think I’ve ever been offered food by the homeowner. For his first door that’s excellent. Like you said. I’ve seen far worse by experienced carpenters. Props to you for having patience with him. Most wouldn’t especially on Christmas Eve!!

Should never fit the doorstop tight to the door if it's getting painted, so you will probably get a call back when it's painted, also you can't be leaving the lining like that with no beading/architrave round it?

Depending on the type of door keep you have there is usually a small adjustment tab inside, use a flathead screwdriver and bend the tab till the rattle stops

Iv been watching all your videos as I’m at a similar level to your apprentice. I was just wondering what you do when you’re hanging doors in old properties and the door frame is wayyyy out of square. Do you cut the door on the bonk? Reframe the door? Or just shim it straight or even pull off the architrave and wedge the frame back straight? Sorry, just a problem I keep coming across. Thanks! Keep up the awesome work!
@donk3ysmash
@donk3ysmash Жыл бұрын
Also do you measure the door frame from scratch when fitting a new door or just draw round the old one. Thanks!
@Trainboyjackvr
@Trainboyjackvr Жыл бұрын
All depends on the door your going to hang, all the oak veneer doors are chipboard with a 10mm edge so be careful how much material you remove, If the old door is well fitted then draw round it, if you start taking arch’s off and trying to level the casing your opening up another can of worms but if they are really bad then replace the casing

Buy a book on carpentry for beginners, get some basic tools and a lot of timber offcuts and get practicing, learn how to use a hand saw and chisels. Just be careful keep your hands safe and never cut towards your body
