Ps: at the beginning, that instant they start talking about pants after a short grave silence, i think is at 9nce humorous and tragic. I still feel like, it was not about them being totally void of sense of gravitas, but about them consciously deciding to ignore the ugliness of the world they are in, to be able to survive war.

As an employer, that excuse is so common from a certain type of people. The connection between this sketch concept and reality is spot on. It is both hilarious and sad, as some will use any excuse to get off work or education. This damages their careers so they become a self fulfilling prophecy. In the late 70s, I lost ONE day of school due to (potentially lethal) heatstroke and missed out on learning how to read Roman Numerals, so to this date, I cannot, and whilst not an important subject on a grand scale of things, it is a nuisance, so missing out on more important subjects like maths and English can be a career changer. Anyway, super comedy duo, probably one of the most innovative ever.

Ironically, it was the next generation in 1950s that used ex luftwaffe jackets, leather aircrew pants etc that became the first "anti social, against the establishment" culture that so in turn evolves into this speak. So those that scoff at this speak, however ridiculous it may sound to you, should understand the irony.

Everyone [ including our Royal Family] were on rationing until 1953 [ except for people like the Larkins of the Darling Buds of May as farmers/scrap metal spivs were self sufficient ], my mum remembers her mum queuing an hour for an orange. I cannot imagine the Generation Z [ of which these two are parodying with the vernacular ] would be able to cope with post wartime rationing, most of them want to commit suicide if they don't get enough likes on their instagram posts.

@Boring Name Hmm, most of the British pilots would have been at least middle class, at least in the first years. There were apparently 145 Polish pilots and they flew in Polish squadrons so the radio conversations could stay in the language they spoke best. The joke is quite simply that in all the B&W films of the war, the RAF characters always spoke posh. So the disconnect between their appearance here and talking like they is yoof is funny.

The Swiss social activist Henry Dunant visited wounded soldiers after the Battle of Solferino in 1859, he was shocked by the lack of facilities, personnel, and medical aid available to help these soldiers. As a result, he published his book, Memoir of the Solferino, in 1862, on the horrors of war.[2] His wartime experiences inspired Dunant to propose: A permanent relief agency for humanitarian aid in times of war A government treaty recognizing the neutrality of the agency and allowing it to provide aid in a war zone The former proposal led to the establishment of the Red Cross in Geneva. The latter led to the 1864 Geneva Convention, the first codified international treaty that covered the sick and wounded soldiers in the battlefield. For both of these accomplishments, Henry Dunant became corecipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.[3][4]
