Re the Rice 6/8 conundrum, Initally I was in agreement that he should stay at 6, why sign possibly the best DM in the world and move him to 8? But then, in identifying out biggest issues last season, there are a lot in Agreement that Rice is unable to break the lines with his passing consistently enough to have an effective transition, So we have needed Jorginho in the team to fulfill that role. As he is unlikely to improve majorly in that area it seems most likely we will find a younger 6 in the mold of Jorginho that offers more and maybe can play an 8 as well, which is why the signing of Bruno Guimarães made sense. As that signing is looking unlikely, it will be interesting to see how we address the issue, Calafiori and Timber maybe being part of that equation?

I think get in a rice understudy possibly that can play those line breaking passes and can be rotated with rice . I’m also not totally opposed to playing rice as an 8 on the occasion probably best we get a sort of ESR replacement in that regard but if they have versatility to play on the wing then perfect . For me these two signings are more fundamental than anything else .

"You're presuming other teams won't progress ahead of you" - the gap between the top 2 teams (City + Arsenal) and the rest of the league is massive. This might sound arrogant but I can't see us finishing outside of the top 2 regardless of what other teams do. There was a pretty decent gap between Liverpool and us in the end and they might struggle next season like we did after a legacy manager such as Klopp/Wenger left. As for the other teams, the gulf is just too massive to bridge in one season. I have us aiming for the 87-93 point range again.

@@alexjones4186one moment doesn’t negate his finishing struggles throughout his career. Germany would still be in euros if he was a better finisher. Not blaming him for their exit but he was part of the attack that in the end didn’t score when it mattered most. We will have games that we’ll need our forward to deliver in clutch moments and maybe even get us out of games we don’t deserve to win. I don’t think Kai has proven to be that kind of player. He has other strengths but I don’t see him being clutch and clinical for the large majority of our next campaign.

I do not understand why anyone is asking for us to sell ESR and sign Eze. At best Eze is about the same level as Smith Rowe, and is also quite injury prone (a train that ESR seems to have now put behind him since the groin surgery). Eze plays in the same position as Smith Rowe, so it would just be selling a player to bring in a player of the same quality who is also 3 years older! Also not really sure on the calls to play Rice as an 8 and bring in a new 6. There are no 6s out there better than Rice (aside from Rodri, who we are not going to get!) so anyone you bring in would be a worse 6 and would.mean that Rice is then playing as an 8, where there are far better options in terms of progressive passing and attacking ability. Keep Rice at 6, where he is best and bring in a new 8 (or just use the ones we have already, like ESR or Nwaneri), though we do probably need a bit of extra depth there.

ESR is my favorite player at the club, and I think that he can legitimately offer a lot to the team. He and Eze are, however, not the same player. Are they similar, and can they occupy similar spaces? Yes. But, Eze (outside of where he has played) is a bit more spritely and a bit more punchy vs ESR. You might be able to ask ‘more’ of Eze in that respect (ie, do a direct job out wide). ESR is, now, more contemplative of a player and might offer more in central spaces. So, there could be a world where they both are at Arsenal and doing different things. With that said, Arteta seems to prefer a more steely 8 and ESR is not that (Rice is, Xhaka was, Merino might be, etc etc). ESR can provide a transition defense (imo), possession attributes, ball progression, etc. But his in the box presence + physicality + solidity in our third / half doesn’t seem to fit what Mikel and co are going for. Finally, I’m not sure if Mikel prefers a “baller” (penetrating ball progression, carrying ability, interruption ability) for a 6 vs Rice who maybe only has the interruption ability (currently). Maybe he thinks that Rice’s impact can be in the no8 spaces in the games that we are obviously dominating and camped out in the opponents half. For me, bringing in a player that can offer what Partey does is a greater head scratcher (or, train up Rice to do so).

@Tom you are becoming ruthless like Arteta mate 😅...but understand your logic about ESR. It's sad that there is little room for emotions or loyalty in football these days....and we are quickly forgetting ESR and Ramsdale's contribution. I feel they are both hard done by not giving them enough minutes to prove their abilities. While I love what Arteta is doing for the team...I just can't agree with some of these decisions. I feel Arteta should give ESR more time esp in Cup competitions or dead games in CL to build his confidence before giving up on him. In any case, wherever they go I will be cheering for them.

ESR could have been used more last year but Arteta does not know how to use the bench. 5 mins at the end of the game does not cut it. But the bottom line, ESR needs to go because Arteta wants something else.

While I agree that he could score 20 goals, I think we could bring another striker in and he could probably do the same thing. He's not a clinical finisher and in the big games he went missing. To a point but I don’t agree with your absolute take. They’re not helpful at all. There’s been a number of times when Arteta needed to make changes and didn’t. However there is also times when Arteta’s changes won us points.
