In this video, GM Susan Polgar reveals what we can learn by examining the critical moments from Bobby Fischer’s games. Bobby had great intuition for these moments, which is one of the reasons he was able to achieve such win so many games - he rarely missed an opportunity.
For many moves in a chess game, we have a few reasonable choices. We can pick any of them without winning or losing the game there and then. However, there are certain times where we get a golden chance to win or save the game; if we miss the move, our chance is gone.
While recognizing these opportunities is a matter of practice, there are a number of signs that such a move might exist. One of these is tension in the position. If one side’s forces are all busy defending other pieces or squares, there might be a way to increase the pressure a little bit more and crack the defense.
We see a great example in the first of Bobby Fischer’s games in this video (part of Susan Polgar’s The Art of Attack - Intermediate). Bobby, playing Black, has a pawn on the 7th rank, blocked by a White Rook. Spending a few moves to double Rooks on the 7th rank seems sensible but White has a passed pawn too. Doubling Rooks would allow White’s a-pawn to promote, meaning the best Black could achieve would be a draw by perpetual check. Instead, sensing the pressure, Bobby finds a devastating move, deciding the game immediately.
The next position is also delicately balanced. Bobby has White and 2 of his pieces are under attack but he has a nice pin on his opponent’s Queen. Fischer’s move, however, ignores both the attacks and the pin, taking advantage of another feature in the position. At the end of the combination, it looks like Black is level on material but Fischer has seen further ahead and emerges a pawn up after his next move. An important point is that Bobby has not only won a pawn, he’s also achieved a superior position. This will have been taken into account before starting the tactic.
Susan Polgar goes on to show many more examples from Bobby Fischer’s games, including a timely trade into a winning endgame and ways to capitalize on a space advantage.
Enjoy the video and remember to check out the complete course here.

Mega Star of chess, Super grand master, einstein of chess.......call what you may, words are not enough to describe the genius of bobby fischer in this life. Fischer rejecting the title retaining match against Anatoly karpov has pained the hearts of all his fans even today though bobby himself never regretted. Bobby fischer giving up chess at his pinnacle has made the chess world bankrupt of a great talent. This is the only blunder he made though never on chess board but in life. we love you bobby forever. in spirit you are always with us. your games are in this world for all of us to cherish for generations together. you are the very reason for our existance in chess. Though you are no more, we are still learning from you through your games. god takes them away young whom he loves the most....you are foremost among them.

In the 2nd example's last move, isn't bd2 better than be3 ? black's bishop is pinned and it has to gaurd the checkmate threat

I think black has Rxf3 and after 2.gxf3 Rxd2 and black wins 2 pieces for a rook.

What about ...Ra5 by black in the position at 1:25? White can obviously not capture the rook, as 2. Rxa5 Rd1+ 3. Rxd1 d1=Q# is quite a threat, so white might just capture the pawn safely... I do not see a way for white to get out of this, and the engine also does not see one, so best would not be to play Rxg2 hoping for a perpetual, but rather Ra5. I do very much appreciate your work, guys, but you really need to put more effort in the sidelines, I think.

Alright, I just saw that the actual mainline continued like that. Well, with that in mind, and I am honestly sorry to say that, as I am being way too salty right now, the analysis is even sloppier.

You're right, Ra5 is winning for Black. I do not want to excuse the mistake, but many teachers analyze and make videos without the computer to be more natural and sometimes these blows escape.

She lives in the US and has decided to call herself Susan for the international audience. Many people who migrate choose to change their names in order to fit in better. My brother in law would get pretty angry with me if I would call him by his birth name, for example.
