I think that the aftermarket toe guards use the same sort of adhesive as when repairing shoes - the sort that you apply and leave to go tacky for a while before fixing the surfaces together. No hammer required with this, just good surface prep and firm pressing.

@mrwhiteymagic If it has the GM now label, it has been “Knocked-in” by the batmaker in-house. Saying that I'd follow this advice: The face, especially the front edges, will be further improved and its useful life prolonged by careful 'knocking-in' with an old leather cricket ball. Take great care when knocking in the edges and toe as hitting too hard may crack the willow - take your time and be patient!

Hi All, I hope you and others can help me. I just bought GM Noir Original but It got indentation which feels like pressing mark little bit above toe. Even with mallet it is leaving indentations marks. Shopkeeper said is it already knocked by GM and doesn't require knocking any more. I need your advise please.

@Mr1indiacricket also from same forum . . . As for the sweetspot, GM says the Icon is higher but comparing them side by side shows that the Flare's sweetspot is a tad higher and not quite as long as the Icon's. I hope this helps with your decision Regards FP

@Mr1indiacricket From a discussion forum . . . Took delivery of a GM Flare today for a friend of mine and I must say I'm VERY impressed. I figured, being a GM it would have a good balance but I didn't expect it to be better than my Icon. As it turns out, both bats are the same weight and the Flare with it's higher sweetspot picks up beautifully.

what is the gadget she uses seen at 5:05 for getting the grip on? where can I get one of these? is it anything other than a metal tube with a circumference slightly larger than the handle? is it possible to make one, with just a metal tube, or is it a bit trickier? thanks

Alasdair MacDonald Yes it's a grip applicator - like you guessed, it's just a metal tube with the ends smoothed so they don't cut the rubber. You would probably need a bit of experience to line it up correctly first go. With a bit of googling, I discovered that GM do sell a grip applicator, but I have no experience of this product.

I thought bats had to be oiled before knocking in? Also, Julian Millichamp (one of the worlds greatest podshavers) says that you should never knock in the edges at a 45 degree angle which is what is happening at 3:10

A different type of hammer is used to apply the toe guard than to knock in. Also by gripping the hammer nearer the head, less pressure is applied.

@Mr1indiacricket Hello, I'd like to help, but the choice will come down to personal preference. There are slight differences in pick up and sweet spot size and placement. There are also many debates online about which bat people prefer having tried both. I think that you'll be happy with either one.

@mrwhiteymagic The blade should be knocked in on the face of the bat including the edge of the face but not on the sides of the blade, the underneath of the toe or back of the blade. After knocking-in, the bat should be used to hit short catches and/or "throw-downs" with an old, good quality cricket ball. It is advisable to initially avoid use against a new ball in either nets or a match.

Depends on your requirements. Junior bats can be purchased for less than £20, Top quality professional bats can be in the high £500s. Many, many options in between.

How much do I want to take a high quality bat?

@@nahidahmed7035 If you have a good budget and love playing then get the best. If you have a smaller budget, then stick to that. The biggest difference in bat quality is from low to medium price. The quality of the top end bats increases by a smaller amount compared to the price. If you want the very best then you have to pay for it. At this top level, you want any advantage you can get, even if it's small it could make the difference in a competition. Then the performance is far more important than the price.
