Although Joan Brown was considered a regional artist, emerging as a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Abstract Expressionist and Figurative schools of Art in the mid 1950's, her work is now being re-considered in a National and International context. Brown's work is important because of the unique and deeply personal style that she developed over the course of her career and the broad significance of the themes in her work.
