I agree with one of the other viewers that having Sienna talk her thoughts (if she is comfortable with that) during the process would be both helpful to her and you as her instructor. You tend to micromanage her a little much. At this point in her training she probably knows more than you think. Additionally too much dialog from you, with her responding to your instruction tends to take away from her ability to self correct. At some point you won’t be in the cabin with her and she will need the confidence of knowing that she has the skills to successfully pilot the airplane on her own.

As an ultralight CFI, I follow a lot one advice my instructor taught me: If you touch the controls, make sure the student notices you're doing it. Don't be that instructor that is constantly correcting his student unnoticed. I also let the student keep going, as long as it's not so dangerous. He will learn a hell lot more from a slammed landing. I'm on the impression you were over correcting too much on previous lessons. Another thing I do a lot is cheer the student with any tiny little progress he makes, event if there are still things to improve. If I was on your boots on that flight I would have celebrated a lot more. BTW, good you made one landing, to both let her remember how a good one looks like, and also let her release the pressure; I do the same after 5 or more touch & goes in a row. At the end, each instructor has his own tricks and methods, that doesn't mean ones are better or others are wrong. And also, some students need different ways to learn.

It's very good to see that you are trying to keep your hands off of the controls, that's got to be a confidence booster for the student. One thing that I'd like to see is for Sienna to talk YOU through every step of the process. This would give you the best opportunity to evaluate her understanding as well as to help cement the process in her mind. Great videos!

I started talking to my CFI and telling him what I was doing as I did it, because I noticed sometimes I'd bail and stop flying the plane. So I told him that if I ever stopped talking that it wasn't a good thing. The talking also helped me keep focused and not silently relinquish control (which is admittedly a stupid thing to do, but a reaction to being overwhelmed as a beginner). So I think your idea of having her talk it through is a good one. It worked for me.

The fact that you tweak things at certain points is a clear indication to the student that there is something connected to that particular procedure that needs more work. I think is a much better instructional process rather than just giving verbal responses. Its great watching Sienna go through this process.

Love the lesson videos. I'm about 15 hours into my training and I dont think i've had a single day that wasn't full of crosswinds for landings. I'd rather learn in those difficult situations but it's never easy. I like how concise you are with your students.

You are an amazing instructor, the best I have seen on YT by a long shot. I love watching your videos. I’m just learning to fly so when it comes to flying I am not experienced. I am experienced teaching people some very difficult skills and I’ve found that not every student can’t do things exactly as I instruct them. Maybe flying is different but many times a student had their own way to do something very well and they were able to complete the mission safely with their own style while still being within the guidelines. Of course every person is different but from what I can tell, her way was working well also. It’s easy to get wrapped up in my personal “preferences” versus what’s required.

I like the bubble view on Sienna. We get to see her focus. She tends to turn wide onto final then fights for the proper altitude, alignment, and glideslope all the way down. Maybe right traffic was throwing her. There were a couple of times she captured final perfectly and just maintained it all the rest of the way. Those were her best landings.

Liked when you let her know under what circumstances you'd take controls. Super awesome you are keeping that student attitude in life Chris and identifying that you can be a little extra hands on with Sienna. I had that same talk with my CFI and asked her to verbally correct me when possible outside of actual safety concerns. Love the encouragement!...Sienna, pattern work is looking GREAT Lady! around 17:00min, I noticed something happening here. You cut the chit chat and really focused on hitting your numbers and nailed it. As someone who tends to joke and chat my way through embarrassment I can say I feel you. But I've really learned to keep a lid on it during pattern work and I find that taking a pause after a landing to let my instructor process and advise before I comment has really helped me focus on the moment and get into the zone. Not criticizing, I am still struggling with my landings as well and my CFI is all over the controls. Lol. Just an observation. Other than that, just fight for center line the entire final leg and you won't feel so rushed trying to correct so much last second... My 14yr old daughter and I both are working towards our PPL and I've watched you since the beginning. You are really getting a handle on this. That landing at about 25:00min was Boss Lady level!!!! Keep it up!!!! Putting yourself out there is crazy brave and I appreciate you SOOOO much! You are a true aviation role model!!!

I really liked the video. The level of positivity was infectious and quite enjoyable. Critique-wise, I thought that taking the checklist away from Sienna was a "minus," since she needs to do the checklist herself. None of my instructors ever did that while training me. Also, I wondered if it may have helped if you gave Sienna more control over her flying, that is, instead of saying, "Add more power," you might say, "do you have enough power?" Or "how's your airspeed?" She could learn to strengthen her decision-making by making a choice on her own after having certain questions asked of her. I'm probably biased because one of my earlier instructors would ask things like, "Where on the downwind are you going to drop your first notch of flaps," versus, "Okay, drop your first notch of flaps." If I had doubts or questions, I would just ask. I like the relationship you have with Sienna. It's like (and maybe I'm misreading things) you're teaching your daughter how to pilot an airplane. It's really heartwarming to watch the interactions between you two. Well, that's all the nagging I'm going to do. 😂 Love ya maaan! 😊

Yes, I was also wondering why he was holding and performing the pre-takeoff checks. Only thing I could think of, was perhaps we missed something that was edited out. Definitely ask her how things are, speed, altitude, etc......she will need to think a bit more, but it will re-enforce learning. Finally got my CFI done...this is just a part time helping people type thing...good to hear as long as you been doing this you still want to tune how you do things...show everything the good ones and bad ones...every person is different I have done a lot of take friends and family before I could officialy sign a book and explaining pitch for airspeed etc etc...everyone is different so you can't find one size fits all...I did not even want to teach landings I just wanted to do CFII work...now I have been teaching my teen to drive I can't say my controls I have to talk when needed and not too much

I'm probably going to go solo in a C152 or C150 in one of my next lessons. And I hate landing/the approach 😬 I have noticed that my landings don't 'plonk' down as much as they used too which is good. I'm just so glad my airport has so many reference points on downwind, base and final so I know exactly how to set up at certain points. sooo nervous to go solo, but lowkey who wouldn't lol. 1:37 reminds me of flying with my dad in his Cessna 182. My dad did the same thing with hands on the controls and foot pedals. The most difficult thing for me is to maintain consistency. I might have several great landings, but then that "one" happens and I kind of lose a little bit of confidence after that. Especially when landing in difficult conditions. One would think that it would improve the technique, but it seems to have opposite effect on me.

Aaah, the plight of a teacher. Been there. At what point do you trust the instruction you have given? In your case, you are putting your life on the line. That's a motivating factor! Why are you still reminding about "flaps up" on landing? Let the student feel what taking off without flaps normal is like. It is the best way to learn. Are you sure she is ready to solo? She is close. You don't share the pre-flight. How is she with that? Perhaps when you say "let's also do this" and then reach over to tweak the instruments - perhaps you could use that as a teaching moment to explain why. That is why I like @MissionaryBushPilot. He constantly explains why. Heads up ... Her radio skills are awesome. The one landing she was left aileron low but not bad. You haven't shared an emergency landing teaching moment AFAIK - FYI. Thanks for the videos! I love them. BTW - she is doing better than I did.

how long does it normally take to get a private pilots license?

I think it lowkey depends on your financial stance, free time to learn/study etc. Like for me I work full time so I only fly once a week for only 30min and I pay for lessons myself (at least $200 nzd a lesson). So it's going to take me a while (I started in March 2023, and have just over 25 hours as I took a few breaks over the year). Plus extra spending for exams, extra lessons etc. Think you need a minimum of 50 hours to get your PPL....so it will take a while.

It’s actually 40 hours minimum! Usually people finish around the 60-80 hr mark! Depending on how much you fly Is also another big factor!

It´s not the students fault for chewing the gum - it´s the flying instructors fault for not explaining to them why they shouldn´t. ;-) Hey, it´s your student - just sayin´ - chop my head! as of today's date, what is the current status of her training? when she is done with her training, i think you should let her fly over your house and have the kids holding signs congratulating her. i think that flight should also be filmed. what do you think of that crazy idea?

Maybe she gets distracted by too much talk and too long explanations when landing. Maybe you should cut short on long comments and just point out like "Speed". "Centreline" etc when about to land. She has a tendency to fluctuate on speed and pitch too much. And she seldom followes centreline until you tell her so. So why not be a bit more silent and focus on a few words? Other than that shes making great progress!!

You are achieving results with her, but you really need to let your student do things at their pace. Taking over the pre TO check list as you did makes no sense. Let her do it! She lacks confidence in the tech and flight theory stuff, and you maintain that by rushing in to speed things along
