LOVE this series!! Here's a pro tip, maybe you can share in a fwd video, If you spin your pencil as you draw a line, it keeps your lead sharp(er) and also keeps your lineweights constant. It's tough to get used to though.

Can't wait for the next episode. It's like watching Bob Ross, only not! As a blacksmith, drawing is one of those things that comes in incredibly handy, but we in the trade don't take it nearly as seriously as we should. I knew a smith some years back that had a binder filled with drawings that he'd put out on the table next to his wares and it would inevitably lead to a commission or three as customers perused the fine lines. He'd laugh about it because he'd spend the time drawing, but never forged anything that he drew. It was just an idea book for him, a way to work out the project and hunt for problems before he ever lit the forge. Over the years, the ability to draw like you see in this video netted him thousands in sales.

This was great! I'm coming back to proper drafting after decades and using a machine for the first time. Your speed and technique is impressive for someone coming back to drawing by hand.

I enjoyed your interesting drawing technique. I learned that if one is right handed one must draw the upright line on the left side of the triangle or scale and slowly twirl the lead holder clockwise as one drawers the line. This keeps the point on the lead and avoids flats forming on the lead. One should never reverse the direction of the line being drawn which has a good chance of taring the velum or paper. I learned this technique back in the 1960's and have used it ever since as a drafter and a Mechanical Engineer. Try it out...hope this helps.

That is a strong lead indeed. I enjoy drawing lines, even if it's long and tedious.

There are about 20 different books titled "Fundamentals of Engineering Drawing", in the picture in the start the authors are too blurred out to find it.

You are correct. The black lettering just says "Second Edition." The authors are Thomas E. French and Charles J. Vierck.

Solidworks is fun, but seeing this makes me want to get a drafting machine and hone my hand drafting skills. Very intriguing

I just want to say with mechanical pencils, in my experience you can keep it almost to the tip of the barrel and write a lot of text for 30 minutes before having to extend it again; you just need the right lead and a strong clutch.

I remember drawing the brick one in high school. I know it didn't come out well. It's really hard to do.

I'm looking at purchasing a vemco drafting machine but without the scales attached. I think I have a recourse to buy some but what do you recommend for the horizontal and vertical scale attachment? are there a more commonly used ones?

Still not set up just need a few more items, but I am following along for now. My old lead sharpener is completely worn out. I have a flat piece of wood with sheets of sandpaper stapled to it would that work for now if I wipe the lead off with a piece of cloth?
