Auditory sampling has been done a lot in music, but nobody has done it like The Books have. Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong used samples in conversation with one another to highlight the importance of every moment in life and convey ideas without lyrics. They truly are brilliant, and this video essay explores how they use samples to create art. This is how the Books sample in music.

@@Norsilca glad to know that other people out there have the same connection with their music as I do. I feel like their discography is my bible -- so much of who I am and what I value was discovered through listening to their music

I am so glad to hear people connecting so deeply with Nick Zammuto's creations. In so many ways, his music struck me as perfect and delightful upon hearing it for the first time around 2006, and they still move me anytime they're playing. I am no expert on modern indie music, but it seems like The Books predicted many styles and moods coming along the way. I was very fortunate to see The Books play live twice and Nick Zammuto play twice post-Books. Each time I was able to see Nick at the merch table or hanging around post-show and I was always pretty much star struck :-) Kind of embarrassing, but there it is. It was easier to chat with his brother Mikey and then just absorb whatever Nick wanted to speak about in general conversations.

Its so rare for a musical group to transend genre all together, let alone be so profound they cause you to look at the world differently. Their albums changed my life and sparked a connection with the world I never knew I had.

Thank you for making this. I got to see this band # different times, and Zammuto twice. Nick helped me jump my car at one of the shows. They were so nice and I loved their music. I even own a spoon box, for God's sake. I miss them. I wish I knew what they were up to. I know Nick's kid got the same cancer he had, then he dropped off. not sure what happened.

yes. Exactly. yes. thank you for this video, you were able to put my thoughts into words so eloquently. Smells Like Content quite literally changed my life. It came to me in a time of complete despair and heartbreak and helped me to remember the absurdity of it all in such a beautiful way. Bravo @art is everthing

Very well done production-wise and spot on. The Books are special beyond special. I've seen Zammuto and briefly spoken to him ... the music makes me feel as if I have a real connection to him, but you're right that the real connection is to all humanity. In general, it's difficult to "take time" to tune out the world in order to feel the world, but that's what The Books give us.

great video. i discovered the books by chance about a year ago and they’re still one of my favourite bands of all time. one of the only bands where i thoroughly enjoyed every album they put out, and one of the only bands i still like just as much as the day i discovered them. but this video just added another depths that makes me appreciate them even more. they’re one of those bands that you just want the world to know about but hardly anyone does.

Don't know if this channel is still active but I have found a lot of Books samples and each one I end up finding makes me appreciate them even more because they are such tiny bits of really obscure things. I really wish there were more artists that had this kind of style, only album I could think of that could satiate that thirst was Paul's 2018 solo album but even then it was only a few tracks. Amazing video btw.

thank you for this - still relevant in 2023! when i was in high school my friend burnt me a copy of The Lemon of Pink (sorry!) and The Books have been in my top 3 (if not #1) ever since. it wasn't until doing my honours year of Bachelor of Music at melbourne that i actually have gone back to research The Books outside of simply listening to them - back in 2003, and even when they split in 2012, the internet was a very different place. super glad to find this essay. thank you!
