I'm glad you mentioned the bromine. It's just engraved on my memory more than anything else. Same with fog juice, thanks to years in the haunt industry. Some years ago, I was privileged to work with a boutique perfumer named Conjure Oils, where I got to create an entire haunted attraction experience purely through scent. From the dusty, dry vanilla of the haunted attic, to the red musk of the vampire room, hay and pumpkin for the scarecrows and sugary cotton candy with cherry 'blood' for the evil clowns, it had all of my memories translated from decades of haunting. And of course, the series ended with the 'Chainsaw'... a mixture of black leather, musk, and gasoline-sweetness I love to this day. The writeup still exists on the website but you have to really dig for it....

That sounds really interesting! I'll have to come across that someday. I was going to include the intentionally repulsive scents that make you wince, but I couldn't find a great spot for that section.

@@StorybookAmusement haha...yeah, the perfume line was intended to smell good, so none of it was gross, but we all remember the Exorcist 'barf house'... A lot of haunts use smells; Universal is guaranteed to be using synthetics (Froggy's Fog is one of the big go tos, but Universal probably has their own source), but independent haunts have been known to be.... shall we say... resourceful when it comes to 'selling a scene'. Rocky Point, a no longer extant major haunt that used to be in SLC, added realism to their decaying operating room by hiding a pan of rotten lasagna noodles under the operating table and splashing some simple green around. Haunted Verdun Manor used to hide zip lock bags of decaying burger in strategic corners, back in the day. Thankfully the development of synthetics has let people get away from creating environmental biohazards just to gross people out convincingly!

This was an excellent analysis of why smells work in many different contexts when it comes to parks. As much as I love the artificial smells (Ratatouille’s bread, Soarin, etc), the nostalgic smells rooted in a space are always my favorite. Specifically, the smell of older ride buildings in the case of Haunted Mansion and Spaceship Earth, as well as the waterfalls in the jungle section of Living with the Land come to mind.

Yes! I love those smells you can’t really recreate-you have to be there. There are some old coasters with musty wooden maintenance bays that have such a strong, pleasant smell. Gah I love those.

Just recently, I smelled something that reminded me of fleshly made ice cream, which reminded me of a small creamery we had in the mall when I was little. I loved walking by it because I loved the smell, I still do to this day TBH. I had forgotten about that place until that exact moment. It felt wild.
