For many readers, the first sentence may not seem to be the most important part of the book. But readers generally don’t know how the sausage is made. They don’t look deeper at the mechanics of how a book is written because they don’t have to. A movie fan doesn’t have to know how the film was made in order to enjoy it. A food connoiseur doesn’t have to understand the mechanics behind food chemistry to enjoy a good meal.
But as a writer you absolutely must master the art of the first sentence. The first sentence can mean the difference between a reader reading the next sentence and the next one. If your first sentence isn’t compelling enough to draw your reader in, you run the very real risk of losing a lot of potential readers right then and there without a hope of recovering them even if your story is good.
A good sentence must be compelling, simple, and hint at what’s to come. This only comes with practice, editing, and a lot of trial and error. But where do you start? How do you go from clueless to at least knowing the basics to work and build on?
Well that’s the point of this video! In this video we’ll briefly look at how you can work on writing good first sentences and what the function of a good first sentence is.
