INSAAAAAANE. I can only imagine the elation you'd feel when the print is finally on the paper. I came here from looking up John Martin's Mezzotints for John Milton's Lost Paradise, having no idea what a mezzotint is. Now that I know my mind is completely blown. He must of been so stoked when he lifted the paper and saw all his hard work. Phenomenal. Thank you for this and amaaazing art work.

Ooooh, the idea of scraping the roughness out rather than drawing with roughness is so smart. I learned about this process by randomly surfing wikipedia, but I could not understand anything describe there. This video makes it soo clear though. Super nice.

Yes ! The ‘template’ in printmaking is referred to as ‘the matrix’ and the result is a print. The print (when completed) is considered the final piece of art in printmaking - and there is no “original” as it is not a copy. It’s a super fascinating tradition of art :)

Great video. I love graphic work and technique explanations in galleries aren't always enough. I liked the brevity, clarity (you can't always follow the mumbled or excitable voice-overs in YT videos!). And you really get a sense of the physical demands of the process. (Plus a Death in Vegas soundtrack, too!). Cheers.

Nice tutorial. I kept thinking there might be a faster way to prepare the plate? like a press with a roller tooth bit that is large enough to do the whole plate at once? You could run the plate through the press multiple times at different angles. Just like your printing press but the roller has direct contact with the plate. The roller is hard metal (like the rocker) and has the desired number of teeth per unit of surface.

I sure hope not, if it really is possessed! What an amazing story that was. I enjoy hearing it read on Paul Goddard's KZbin channel. No it wasn't! This is the second time I have edited this comment! I loved Peter Yearsley reading it on the MR James KZbin channel, but they only have Part Two available now. I don't know what became of Part One, but I heard it in its entirety there at some point and the graphics to go along with it are simply chilling! The one on Paul Goddard's channel is a good reading, but without the progressive mezzotint graphics, only a still shot. I am appealing to Simon Stanhope to create a version. He is an awesome narrator on Bitesized Audio Classics. I dare say Julie might try her hand at illustrating something for the story in mezzotint, for authenticity!

So is the image drawn onto the copper, or is an image printed onto the plate before you ink it and print on paper?
@julieniskanenskolozynski4497

First you rock the plate to prepare the surface. And then you draw the image into the copper plate by scraping the copper. And then you ink and print onto paper

Hi! No, not for mezzotint. It is all hand done and requires all of the tedious effort put in. But you might be able to do a laser engraving and print that as an engraving. I don’t know anything about laser engraving though. Good luck!

It appears from the comments that everyone is enthralled by this technique and demonstration. However, I must take the opposite view. I have always viewed mezzotint as an unnecessarily laborious process, and actually as a method that results in prints that, in my opinion, tend to be less incisive and less exciting than traditional more linear intaglio methods. Therefore, part of what I am saying is that the results do not really justify the monumental number of hours in physical labor involved. I am extremely familiar with etchings and engravings over the centuries, and when I think of my favorite artists or mentors, I never think of any who engaged in mezzotints. Essentially, I consider mezzotint to be a minor art in the arena of intaglio.
@RitualoftheHabit
@RitualoftheHabit 10 ай бұрын
Art and enjoyment are very subjective though! I personally don’t like the process of intaglio printmaking at all because the printing process is too slow - I’m primarily a lithographer, and while the stone processing can be labor intensive the speed of printing makes it worth it for me. That being said, you and I probably both know many printmakers who are incredibly process oriented and enjoy mindful, meditative, slow practices like this. While I would agree that many mezzotints bore me - I feel that sometimes the process comes before the art - there are many examples of the medium’s merit. I would check out Linda Whitney’s art - I’ve seen those mezzotints in person and could stare at them for hours
