'The Artist’s Experience: 1950s London' brings to life the experiences and cultural milieu of early career artists in London during this period. The film combines archival audio recordings with a layered visual collage of diverse archival materials. The artists whose voices are featured in the film all spent the early years of their careers working in London in the 1950s: Eduardo Paolozzi, Sandra Blow, Kenneth Armitage, Eileen Agar, Lynn Chadwick and Mary Fedden. These individuals ultimately became notable creative personalities in the second half of the 20th century. The recordings used in the film are excerpts from the British Library’s 'Artists’ Lives' oral history collection. The collage of imagery is composed using footage from the British Council’s Film Archive, photographs from the National Portrait Gallery, London, and a broad range of imagery from other archival sources. This is not a film about the work of the artists. Rather, it transports the viewer back in time to explore what the artists’ experiences were like.
This film was funded by a Developing your Creative Practice Grant from Arts Council England.
