The Ashy Tailorbird (Orthotomus ruficeps) is a small songbird found in parts of Southeast Asia, including countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Belonging to the Cisticolidae family, this bird is known for its subtle plumage and melodious song.
Adult Ashy Tailorbirds typically measure around 10 to 11 centimeters in length. They have a predominantly ashy-gray plumage on their upperparts, with a slightly paler underside. The crown and nape may have a rusty or reddish-brown tinge, and they have a distinctively long tail, which they often flick and cock while foraging.
Ashy Tailorbirds inhabit various types of habitats, including forests, woodlands, scrublands, and gardens, where they forage for insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates. They are often seen hopping and flitting among dense vegetation, using their slender bills to probe for prey hidden in foliage or bark.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Ashy Tailorbirds is their vocalizations. They are known for their melodious and repetitive songs, which consist of clear whistles and trills. These songs are often heard throughout their territories, particularly during the breeding season when males may engage in singing duels to establish and defend their territories.
During the breeding season, Ashy Tailorbirds form monogamous pairs and construct cup-shaped nests from plant fibers, leaves, and grasses. Nests are typically hidden in dense vegetation or low shrubs, where the female lays a clutch of eggs and both parents share incubation and chick-rearing duties.
While the Ashy Tailorbird is not considered globally threatened, it may face localized threats from habitat loss and degradation due to deforestation, urbanization, and changes in land use. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving and restoring suitable habitats are essential for ensuring the continued survival of this charming and melodious songbird species.
