An amazing song from an amazing band from my amazing childhood. I wonder if the guy dancing on the platform can be identified and found. He is the King of this event. I have that American thing of thinking that one only goes from strength to strength until you have a coronary in the bathroom at your grand-daughter's wedding reception. Or maybe it's better just to let the past be the past....

Great observation - even when you know the words, it’s hard to speak or sing them that fast. I only knew the words because they were once printed - I believe it was in the Sunday newspaper magazine.

Can’t count how many times I have watched this. I’m hooked on the time frame, the lyrics, reminiscing about my youth and wondering where these people are today. What was then the 60-70s finds me in my 70s. Groovy eh?

Everybody, sing along! if you dare... Every time I think that I'm the only one who's lonely Someone calls on me And every now and then I spend my time in rhyme and verse And curse those faults in me And then along comes Mary And does she want to give me kicks , and be my steady chick And give me pick of memories Or maybe rather gather tales of all the fails and tribulations No one ever sees When we met I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks Whose sickness is the games they play And when the masquerade is played and neighbor folks make jokes As who is most to blame today And then along comes Mary And does she want to set them free, and let them see reality From where she got her name And will they struggle much when told that such a tender touch as hers Will make them not the same When we met I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch And when the morning of the warning's passed, the gassed And flaccid kids are flung across the stars The psychodramas and the traumas gone The songs are left unsung and hung upon the scars And then along comes Mary And does she want to see the stains, the dead remains of all the pains She left the night before Or will their waking eyes reflect the lies, and make them Realize their urgent cry for sight no more When we met I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch

Perhaps it was a bit new style and they were getting familiar with it. The guy on the pedestal was really good, which kinda lead our eyes to your view that the guy(s) were getting it better. And to think some in that crowd may have died months / years later in a distant swamp because LBJ didn't have the wisdom to get outtta 'Nam and Nixon couldn't get real either.

Many people interpreted this as a paean to marijuana, which is also known as "Mary Jane." They were probably right. Singing about drugs was a good way to get banned on the radio back in the 60s. The song was obviously about marijuana. But there are also interpretations that make a reference to Mother Mary and mention a Christian background. But that is probably rather unlikely.
