Just from the title and cover photo I knew it was the DGX-670! For $850 US, it's a fully blown PROFESSIONAL arranger akin to the PSR-9000 in a Digital Piano package! ALL the features, recording, automation while recording, effects, and a lot of the sounds are there! It's unbelievable how they put so much into this thing at this price point! The only downside is the lack of MIDI ports in favor of a single USB MIDI interface. But even with that, you get both audio and MIDI to your computer with that interface. And instead of a floppy drive, a front panel USB storage port! Oh and did I mention 88 Keys?! 😊😊

I am so happy to hear that you own a P121. I have owned one of those for nearly 2 years. I was looking for a piano and came across the P121 by accident. I didn't even have instruments with 73 weighted and graded keys on my radar. I love it! @@WoodyPianoShack I didn't screw it on to the wooden stand as intended because I want to take it on the road, too. I bought the dedicated carrier bag, too. Now comes the party trick: I am blind and have WALKED to a gig with this - carrier bag in hand, keyboard stand under my arm, my trusted Lava ME2 guitar on my back and my white cane in my other hand. Do this with other stage pianos! :) the direct PA line out in a piano in this price range has surprised me a bit, tbh. The only small disappointment is the audio quality when using USB audio from the piano in Logic Pro. It sounds so…how do I say this?…mono, so compressed but not compressed if you know what I mean. But it is also my master MIDI keyboard to play Komplete 13 instruments and the pretty awesome new pianos built into Logic Pro 11. I recommend you check those out if you haven't done so. I laughed hard at the realistic grunting noises while lifting the box. Another reviewer claimed it was "relatively manageable" while lifting one corner of it. Not. This is my main piano (I have white as well) and it doesn't go anywhere! It's a monster, but I really love it. It feels so good to play and the voices are impressive and bluetooth works flawlessly. I'm a beginner player, researched for ages to buy this first piano and am truly impressed with this instrument. I also purchased a Roland Gokeys 5 after viewing your video and going down the rabbit hole on that keyboard too. I use that for road gigs and I do love that for the portability but after playing the Roland I always yearn for the feel of the DGX670 once again. I think this is what every singer songwriter needs, something immediate, self contained, and has some basic sounds, so quickly sketch things out, without having to have their creativity interrupted, by cables and other devices. Then other workstations, such as a Motif M, and virtual instruments can then be used to add higher quality instrumentation. The patches sounded good enough, for live use, and basics. Good job Yamaha. What I would have wanted to hear was the electric pianos. I once spent a month with a DGX, about 12 years ago. Memorable time of my life, in those days, the keys were semi weighted, but still shaped like proper piano keys. Year would like to hear examples of the main instrument groups from this piano.
@Zoco1015 ай бұрын
@@okay1904 Your point about self-contained is highly valid. You get a lot for your money. Currently, it costs less than £600 (online) in the UK. It is a shame that the DGX-670 lacks lineouts, and I hear the complaint very often from other players. I'm convinced that Yamaha disappointed us intentionally, so as to keep the DGX-670 separate from its other products. It doesn't want us to have everything we need in one product. Irritatatingly, Yamaha does sometimes list the DGX-670 as a portable (and giggable?) piano, but the heavy weight, the low speaker power and the lack of lineouts all determine that this is really a home digital piano with strong arranger features - kind of what Woody has said. I don't like auto accompaniments at all, except for drums/percussion sometimes, so sadly, I can't exploit this imperfect but (still) wonderful instrument. For those who are determined to hook the DGX-670 to external amplification or an audio interface, you can use a Y cable (Y for yuk?) connected to the headphone socket. In theory this mutes the onboard speakers, but I think I heard that you can override the muting. The P-121 & 125 have this override feature for using the headphone sockets, even though they have proper lineouts anyway.

I still have my DGX 305 for 15 years, splendid dynamic keyboard and astonishing piano sounds, well made rhythms I even use for recording drums... It is 73 keys plastic unit easy to carry around, but pleasant to make music on. They included a few first class tones from much more priced flagship models at the time, Tyros and Motif. Woody I think you and I bought this piano on the same day! Mine has yet to come, but after a lot of research I came to the same conclusion, the value is insane on this thing! It’s validating to see a market expert like yourself is on the same page. Briefly addressing some other comments, I chose this over the Roland FP-E50 bc the arranger functions on that are clearly an afterthought, I didn’t hear one decent style in all of the demos. It doesn’t have any midi processing ability whatsoever for reading/recording midi files, no sequencer, just an audio recorder, plus I have zencore on 3 other Roland devices lol. Those were my reasons, I think if you ever intend to gig, then yes it makes more sense, but as a pure house piano, the Dgx 670 is the one. Also a quick add to the port discussion, a simple $40 USB midi host device can add MIDI Din to this keyboard, I plan on hooking my Jupiter Xm to it for Yamaha + Roland bliss 😊 Thanks for the great vid!

@@WoodyPianoShack I haven't tried it, but I think you can directly connect the USB cable from Yamaha DGX to Yamaha MODX to use DGX as an external keyboard. In Logic Pro, for example, you can create an external instrument, connect it to a synth like MODX and then play it with DGX keyboard. I think DGX was designed for regular home users, so I'm not sure how many people would want to connect it to other synths 🙂. Actually I have both DGX and MODX, but I've never tried connecting them. I’ve got the black version with stand and 3 pedal unit. It’s a great digital piano. Loaded with great sounds and I can’t believe Yamaha put a proper 16 trk sequencer and style sequencer on this model. My only real gripes are that you can no longer choose Yamaha XG voices as main voice, and they can only be accessed via style editing/recording. I also dislike that there isn’t really a proper Alto Sax for solo play in the main voice categories. The preset Alto Sax is more of an articulated crescendo not suited for solo work. XG voices have a better one, but you can’t select them for main voice…, real bummer IMO because those XG voices can be pretty versatile when you need a good backing voice that sits well within the mix.

Hi Woody! Exciting times in the Piano Shack! 😊 Interestingly, I posted a comment about the DGX-670 on your video about cheaper alternatives to a Genos 2. No one, and I do mean not a single person, apart from me, mentioned the -670! I find it very odd. Everyone is talking about the Genos 2 and the PSR-SX line but no one is talking about the DGX. I must admit I am one of those people too - I can’t help myself - I am in love with the PSR-SX900! However, I think the naming scheme for the DGX isn’t as attractive - no 9’s or Z’s and R’s to signify it’s a high-performance keyboard so people don’t notice it as much. Also, Yamaha doesn’t promote this model very much. That aside, when you look at it objectively, you soon come to a realisation what an incredible value for money it is! Essentially, it’s an 88-key PSR-SX600 with a much better piano engine. In fact, I think the only arranger that can beat the DGX on piano sounds is the Genos 2 itself - and I am not even sure that it can! I’ve looked at the owner’s manual and it’s definitely a lovely keyboard and it seems to me be a perfect combination of a digital piano and an arranger keyboard. As a digital piano, I think it is as good as any entry Yamaha model. As an arranger, you may not get all the features as you would on a dedicated arranger but you do get the basics and it can provide countless hours of musical enjoyment for the entire family! Too many exclamation marks, I know, but I am really excited you chose this one because I have been looking at the same model and simply cannot figure out how they can even make such a wonderful instrument at such a modest price. I hope this is the first of many videos about the DGX-670, Woody! As always, I want to thank you for maintaining the high standards of your videos. They aren’t just educational and interesting, they’re fun too and can be enjoyed by pros and enthusiasts alike. Thank you so much and all the best! Cheers!

thank you for the encouraging comment, and yes, it was a viewer in the comments that mentioned the DGX, so probably you, thanks! I was not even aware of this model line, I think many players are sleeping on this one. i do notice certain limitations when stepping down from the G2, but nothing that would stop a decent player from making some great music! i love exclamation marks too!

@@WoodyPianoShack Thank you, Woody! Well, I did buy the PSR-SX900 based mostly on your presentation so recommending the DGX-670 to you was the least I could do! 😊 Kidding aside, the -670 does seem like an incredible value proposition, doesn’t it? I know you bought it yourself and - for yourself - but I think many viewers would like it if you covered it more in-depth on your channel - precisely because it is something of a hidden jewel but also because it seems to successfully merge two different instrument categories - a digital piano and an arranger. Thanks for the comment, Woody and all the best! Cheers mate!

How can I use the DGX670 as a midi? I have an iPad with IGRAND PIANO and ILectric piano apps, and I only wanna use the sounds coming out of those apps.. do how can I set it up ? Thanks.
@WoodyPianoShack4 ай бұрын
since this lacks midi, we might be out of luck, unless the usb port can communicate with your ipad...

My MX49 is a champ and I want another keyboard for the family… So doing a little looking the CK61 is right at $1000 America, lots more but no speakers. But this is a great family room unit and a grand kid spills milk it wasn’t in your studio.

I'm partial to Jack, Swiss, and Colby. It would be interesting to make a hard, Industrial/EBM version of Oh Susana or When the Saints Come Marching In however.

yes, all adjustable then you can save your desired settings as a registration for future use

I uste to have a yamaha dgx. I had the yamaha dgx 630 for sevral years. and it was a grait keyboard. I would play it all the time. then I upgraded, and gave it to a relative and I think they still have it. that was my first very good keyboard. but to be honest, the dgx 670 sounds way better. probibly because it's a lot newer, and because a lot of advancements were made between the 630 and 670.

how is the sound compared to a psr-sx900? also I think it’s meant to play with an Ipad…could you showcase this in your next video..I do own the psr-sx700 but i would love the 88 keys feature..thanks and have a great day…from Canada :-)

sx900 is superior in sounds, styles and features since this is based on sx600. don't actually own an ipad, sorry!

I’ve had my DGX 670 for about 2 years and still scratching my head to understand all the features. The owner’s manual is pretty basic. There’s supposed to be some type of app that works on iPad with the DGX but I’ve yet to figure it out. I enjoy it. It has great sound for my living room space and the keys feel so good and responsive. I’m still looking for someone experienced to do a full tutorial so us novices can better use the awesome features though.

Hey Woody, did you also look at Roland FP-E50, which is similar (hybrid digital piano/arranger)? I think Korg also has one. I was wondering if you considered all three, and the Yamaha still was your preference?

like i mentioned, although i usually ponder such decisions, once I saw the price I pulled the trigger without comparing to anything else, was not even aware of the competition, thanks for the tips!

How would you rate the speakers on this to the sx series. I have the sx700
@WoodyPianoShack4 ай бұрын
sounding pretty similar to the PSRSX900 to me, and better than P125 and similar. they are fine, i normally run mine at about 11 o'clock on the volume dial, adequate and punchy. perhaps a touch harsh on the drums is my only critique.

Did you get the matching stand?
@WoodyPianoShack4 ай бұрын
no i didn't bother, it makes it difficult to move around the house compared with separate stand, and all the boxes take up loads of space if keeping them, which i normally do. no regrets so far!

I've owned the DGX-650 for more than 10 years now, and I still love it. But, if I were buying a keyboard in this category today, I would buy the Roland FP-E50 instead for the better sounds, professional outputs, and lighter weight...all at a similar price point.
@WoodyPianoShack5 ай бұрын
great recommendation, thanks, must investigate that line!
@FirstLast-nr6gf5 ай бұрын
Yamaha DGX has better speakers (that's why it is heavy) and high resolution color display. It has better drum kits. For example, there is a Turkish drum kit with darbuka, bendir, etc.

It's not useless on stage at all. Use a stereo 1/4" male to two mono 1/4" male jacks (insert cable).
@WoodyPianoShack4 ай бұрын
yeah, that is a "workaround", i'm not sure though for professional use which requires at least line output levels, preferably balanced, and not a headphone output level, with wrong impedances etc. Just because the cable fits doesn't mean it's solved. But I could be wrong.
