SONY had actually 2 games development teams before the Playstation and were part of Sony Music, and later 3, one was Sony Imagesoft which made mostly license games for the Nes, Snes, Genesis and Sega CD, the second was Digital Pictures the creators of the FMV games which failed in the late 80s, but Sony bought them and were one of the strongest makers of FMV games released on the Sega CD., the third team came later, when the Playstation was full on in development, it was the British studio Psygnosis, which was one of the biggest PC gaming developers of the 80s

PlayStation 2 is still my favorite in this line of consoles but damn the PS1 was awesome. Resident Evil 1 and 2 and Metal Gear Solid were the heavy hitters for me. And Tekken was definitely the king of the 3D fighter, at least on home consoles.

The thing about Sony with the Playstation is that they learned from the failures of the 32bit consoles, they saw the "backstage" sorta speaking of the gaming industry, Shuhei Yoshida said on a podcast that they looked and learned from the mistakes of the 3DO for example, after all Trip Hawkins wanted Sony to be one of the several brands making it´s own Sony 3DO, just like panasonic, Goldstar and others did, Sony also learned from the mistakes of Atari with the Jaguar, the issues of Nintendo with licensing and their partners, and the mistakes of Sega, finally, Sony reframed how to run a videogames console, they didn´t sell it as a videogame system but as an entertainment system, but with the "cool" feeling of sega and the great games of Nintendo, in contrast to the boring too serious apporach of 3DO and the lack of quality games of the jaguar, is more than clear that nobody, not even Nintendo and Sega knew how to develop a good 32 bit system, and how to make games for it, Sega were the ones that made 3D games good with their arcades, but they might have wanted to make the Saturn a downgraded version to keep the similarity with the arcade originals at home, just like they did with the Megadrive, the games looked like arcades but not replaced the arcades, but when Sony came with a system that had games that looked like the arcades with Tekken and Ridge Racer was too late for Sega, i don´t buy the story they made a 2D system cause Sega were the leaders of 3D gaming, and Kutaragi was inspired by the 3D arcades of Sega, they just didn´t know how to make a proper system for the next gen, the same problem happened to nintendo
@VideoGameDocs3 жыл бұрын
You're exactly right John! One of the biggest things for Sony was seeing the failings of the 3DO and the Jaguar, and also due to Sega and Nintendo's strict licensing practices that quite obviously frustrated the industry, Sony wanted to change things and shake things up ultimately for the better. I think that Sega's idea was that at the time 3D was so primitive on those arcade boards, that it would be too expensive or hard to make a home console that can play 3D games, so instead they opted for an incredibly powerful 2D system that would overall make 2D games better. Once Sony obviously proved that 3D could be done it was a bit too late for the Saturn. As for Nintendo I think they knew what they were doing, and that they wanted to be the best of the best in terms of 3D graphics, but teaming with Silicon Graphics probably complicated things some since their workstations, technology, etc. was a bit too complicated, so for Nintendo to implement it at a good price point was very difficult for them. Don't forget the boneheaded decision to stay with cartridges, since they wanted more control like they always do, and wanted to keep piracy at bay.

@@VideoGameDocs They saw it all and were very smart, many of the Sega "america" people that left when Kalinske left went to Playstation, including Mark Cerny which made Sonic and helped making Crash Bandicoot, if you look at the marketing of Playstation in America looks like the style Sega was doing but better, Sega´s marketing was agressive but cringy, Playstation was agressive but cool, you can see Sony was a bigger company and since they managed the music business they knew how to make things cool and not cringy, Sony in the 90s was at their best without a doubt

@Brian Babin Eh, kinda. Saturn VF2 had to get rid of the 3D backgrounds altogether, and I believe the character models are lower-poly on Saturn as well. But the gameplay is 1:1 between them as well as smoothness and controls and for a fighter those are very important things to have.

Good stuff, the SNES and the PS1 were my favorite consoles, and the Saturn in retrospect was the one I feel like I missed out on the most even to this day getting to experience it's games is not easy. But at the time this was all happening I didn't realize just how dominant PS1 had become. Not much competition from sega and a 2 year lead on N64 phew.

Fun fact I learned while working at a game store in the 90's. You could fix a slow playstation by turning it upside down. Our theory at the store was that it put less stress on an aging motor and thus could spin faster. This also worked for the hdd on an old pc that crashed years back. Turning the drive upside down worked, but just long enough to copy the contents to a new one.
@VideoGameDocs3 жыл бұрын
Fun fact that actually works on Dreamcast consoles too! Letting gravity work with the laser helps them out quite a bit. It's the only way my Dreamcast will read Shenmue!

Sony won three gens (PS1, PS2, & PS4), Nintendo won three gens (NES, Super NES, & Wii), if you only count the handheld side Nintendo hasn't lost at all.
@RetrOrigin3 жыл бұрын
The SNES one is somewhat debatable considering the Genesis was retired almost 2 years prior to the SNES getting retired. The Genesis outsold the SNES while both consoles were still actively sold and the SNES caught up after the Genesis was retired.
@tonyhell9 ай бұрын
The SNES one isn't debatable if you're including the Super Famicom, which smoked the PC Engine and Mega Drive.
@leeartlee9159 ай бұрын
@@RetrOriginThe Genesis only ever outsold the SNES in NA. I would say that Sega made a STRONG play for about 3 years. But they faltered… like they would continue to do so.

Sony also made their 4th generation with PS5 if only you wouldn’t count Nintendo Switch as a “console” at all.
@Sinn01006 ай бұрын
@matthewkrenzler1171 The Switch is not 9th generation hardware no matter how long Nintendo clings to it or what their fans want to believe. It is 100% 8th generation from its architecture to the consoles it was launched to compete against (Xbox One and PS4). Hardware is not dictated by the year it is released but its architectural makeup. As of right now Nintendo is in some serious hot water and they know it. At current Nintendo has stupidly flooded the market with so many models of the Switch that they have stagnated their own market. Meanwhile, Nintendo's competitors have left them so far behind it's like a running joke. The Switch got away with what it was doing in large part because its competitors were all targeting 1080p with many games falling short of that. Thos days are long over. Hell, most 3rd parties are complaining the Series S is weak. Think about how far off the rails this Switch business has gone. There are games for the Switch right now that cannot be played without a stable internet connection for streaming..."portable!" Addendum- If Nintendo does not release real new hardware by the end of this year....things are going to turn nasty. It doesn't have to have bleeding edge graphics but just enough that they can host 3rd party games without severely degrading them. I'm thinking 1440p w/DLSS and Cuda Cores for minor Tracing.

While the playstation was sony’s first game console, but if we count the australian version of the playstation wich could also play video CD’s, we could consider it sony’s next hybrid system,and while the msx was NOT sony’s exclusive system,but it was clearly a hybrid computer and game console in 1, sony did heavily focussed on gaming back in the 80’s withe their msx with accessoires such as controllers wich clearly imitated those nes controllers, It’s sad that the sony msx faded into obscurity, Am stunned that sony could do it all alone with their ps1 with no help from sega or nintendo or atari, neither of their games appeared on the ps1 Well sony only needed to learn from their mistakes, am sure if sony came first with their 32bit system, am sure they would,ve make those same mistakes like those compatitors did.
@matthewkrenzler11715 ай бұрын
Sony never liked endorsing VCD compatible tech for Australia, among other brands, as our PlayStation systems are actually derivative of the PAL version from the UK. That model was intentionally made for the majority of Asia only (except the Korea’s).

You are such a N fan boy. Sony got FF beyond just storage. Accessibility and cost made it possible. However Sony had access to CGI tech that was shared with Soft and that was dynamic in the shift. Graphics became way bigger in FMV and that was a massive share of tech that destroyed N. As to speak on Sony had more money. Ha. They may have but didn't then. Sony has continued to punch out of their weight continuing to destroy Microsoft who has way more money. Microsoft is shifting in a benign way less dramatic than Sega. They've done that by not dollar bills but destroying their competitors over and over again. Until someone can do it better and have more accessibility to both developers and reach to an audience, get over it.
